Woohoo! /avon will tell hubby to trade in the land cruiser If you read carefully, it says "The SmarTruck II on the show floor was clearly armed for military duty". I doubt it will ever see such use. However, the concept of an ATV with a modular unit capability that can be used by various agencies isn't so bad or far fetched, IMO. Right now it's only a concept but something more refined might be heading down your street in years to come.
ralphwiggum 6 Posted January 9, 2003 glad to see that it's not in LA autoshow which i'm going soon.... it is a good idea to have some consistency that can be utilized by different agencies. and from looks of it, i say actual version would look a bit better than one in autoshow. however, i doubt if the auto will be used as regularly as hummer is. red oct 2 Posted January 9, 2003 what i don't like about this is that they are blowing on crap. $600,000.00 bucks was waisted on building this shit box when i think could have been spent on acually fighting terrorsism

bn880 5 Posted January 9, 2003 The stupidity. Counter-terrorism vehicle, man, this completes the illusion of terrorism being an entity you can fight with weapons. cybrid 0 Posted January 10, 2003 Worst of all, why would they build that on a GM truck chassies? They're currently the worst trucks you can buy in north america, quality wise. And before I get flammed out of the place, no that is not just some bias, research it yourself if you want.

Paratrooper 0 Posted January 10, 2003 If it was part of a TV crime fighting action series I wouldn't beileve it! It is stupid. The whole "Terrorism" thing is used to justify any waste of money and any government idea. Tony Blair was even talking about terrorism with refrence to Iraq the other day, now the Iraq affair has its own issues but I don't think terrorism enters into it. drewb99 0 Posted January 10, 2003 As a general Public utility vehicle, I think it's a great idea- Have 1 big ol' vehicle that's able to easily change configurations from agency to agency, you could put ladders and fire hoses on the rear for a fire department, and easily strip it down and put gun lockers and armor for an urban SWAT team. As an anti-terrorism vehicle, though, it's not a very good idea, Terrorism is fought through politics, not driving around in a pimped-out Silverado with a TOW on top. Paratrooper 0 Posted January 10, 2003 The point is that the threat of 'terrorism' is either being cynically used to make money or justify the random spending of defence budgets. For what that costs you could get some useful equipment.

Mr. Snrub 0 Posted January 10, 2003 If only it could change into a 15 metre high robot, and we'd have a Transformer seems only a matter of time before we see Optimus Prime in service with the US Army From what i've heard, it's not designed primarily as an offensive 'counter-terrorist' truck, one which will chase terrorists down streets etc. (which it could do, however) but as an electronic surveillance/intercept vehicle. But it definitely has, as Tex said, propaganda value.

Denwad 0 Posted January 11, 2003 Yes, 600,000 is almost chump change. The US Army game has a very large budget, I think somewhere around 7 million dollars will be spent operating the servers over a five year period.
