ran 0 Posted December 22, 2002 this movie kinda reminds me of "the matrix" in its synopsis but looks somewhat .. more trash or at least less hollywood blockbuster than the matrix the realisator of Avalon is Mamoru Oshii , the realisator of the anime "ghost in the shell" and it looks like an author movie with it's black and white (red/brown/grey and white actually ) pictures in a near future , the world's youth has been addicted to an illegal new game called "avalon" the game drops the players in the middle of an Eastern European conflict where they form combat squads called 'parties' to fight a never-ending virtual war. But something is wrong , some people never come back from this virtual world ... the following links spoils the story a lil' bit , it's better to discover it when you watch the movie , but it gives the great lines of the story http://www.destroy-all-monsters.com/avalon.shtml there's apparently a lot of military hardware in the movie but as always , Oshii's films are more subjects for reflections than for actions so , we got a japanese movie filmed in polish (i say thanks to subtitles)
ran 0 Posted December 22, 2002 it's available in DVD since november here is the trailer (sorry , but the writings are in french , doesn't matter a lot anyway) trailer high quality for high speed connections trailer low quality for low speed connections those are .ram , you'll need realplayer to see them
ran 0 Posted December 22, 2002 it's on my christmas wishlist its Cinema and DVD releases have been pretty confidential , hopefully , i had the chance of having a friend who liked japanese cinematography , he shown me some bits of the movie , and it's .. stunning the OST is by Kenji Kawaii , he's well reputed in japan for his music and i can say you that the OST rocks , especially the "log off" and "log in" songs with great vocals
FallenPaladin 0 Posted December 22, 2002 I have the DVD and I have to say I love this movie. It`s very special and contains of a lot of very cool camera perspectives. And you can see a lot of the vehicles in action that are also used in OFP. It`s pure adrenaline to see the shilka fire in the beginning In my eyes Avalon portraits the MP community of OFP 3 in a not so far future I also love the score, it`s magnificent!! Turn the surround system up and enjoy!! People who liked Ghost in the Shell will also love Avalon, people who don`t like japanese movies and storylines will be a little confused, I guess. So ka
FatJoe 0 Posted December 22, 2002 lol you've been talking about it all day at ofpec.. so this threat doesn't supprise me I havent seen the film, sounds ok, though cheers Joe
ran 0 Posted December 22, 2002 i loved ghost in the shell Oshii makes great movies , really and isay : everybody who hasn't tried , just give it a try , order either ghost in the shell or avalon on dvd , those films are worth it
FallenPaladin 0 Posted December 22, 2002 But don`t expect an action overload! The movie contains more of story and a sad mood. A lot of the scenes are very quiet. The actionscenes in relation to the whole movie in percent may be 7,5-10%. Like I said Avalon is a very special kind of movie and difficult to compare to any other movies than anime. FallenPaladin 0 Posted December 22, 2002 Anime is not anime if you understand. Avalon is like Ghost in the Shell or like Jin Roh, and unlike Dragon Ball or other cheap mainstream crap like that. The storyline of Avalon, GitS and Jin Roh is deeper and more complex than in any american movie I`ve ever seen (Memento is an exception, of course) .

Badgerboy 0 Posted December 23, 2002 Certainly, their fondness for tentacle sex sort of brought over the wrong image. After watching Akira, I went out and bought the manga... all of it, about 8 inches thick. Fantastic stuff though.....

Tex -USMC- 0 Posted December 24, 2002 never actually met a cyberpunk. I've always considered myself a cyber-well-adjusted youth
ran 0 Posted December 24, 2002 the cyberpunk is a sub culture , it keeps the essence of the classical 80's punk (desillusion , distrust in modern world) , but it's transposed in an anticipation world (generally a technologic world , look at ghost in the shell for exemple) in the movies and it's figured IRL by the rave/house culture , the computer underground , and other thing such as goth morbidity cyberpunk is a mix between 80's punks' ideas and with today's technology cyberpunk was mainly a early/middle 90's movement
