Helicopter Time Trials - Impossible with Regular flight model?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am having severe difficulties accomplishing gold medal on the helicopter time trials when I am using regular flight model.

I realize that I am far from great when it comes to flying, but for example on TT7: Hillside Groove, I manage to finish with as perfect a run as i can possible manage, but its still 2:33:980, and the requirement for gold is 2:29:500.

My question: Is it supposed to be possible to get the gold medal on every helicopter time trial with regular flight model, or is it expected of us that we learn how to master advanced flight model just to knock the time down a few seconds?

Looking at videos on youtube I can see that AFM lets you get faster speed on straight lines and sharper turning abilities using A and D on the keyboard, but it is of course significantly more difficult to play.

Why are the gold requirements the same for the two, when RFM clearly has massive disadvangages?

People on youtube using AFM barely get the gold medal by clearing it in 2:28 or 2:29, which leads me to think that its not possible to do it with RFM.

I tried posting the same question in the Q&A section of the forums but haven't gotten any replies, so I figured I could try my luck here.

I apolgize if this is not the appropriate place to post this. If its neccessary, feel free to move it or delete it.

- Ben

You maybe right in that the helo time trials are balanced around the advanced flight model. I believe I'm a pretty decent pilot with the standard flight model (K&M) and yet I've only managed to get gold on TT8, 9 and 10. I've tried both TT6 and 7 many times but have yet to score gold. I think the key is that the advanced flight model enables you to fly faster on the straights thanks to lack of a max speed limiter (as long as you don't overspeed otherwise your rotors break). Advanced flight model also gives you direct control over the collective which helps.

In principle, I consider that there shouldn't be obstacles, or a difference, in receiving achievements of high speed from type of the used flight model. It has to be used at the request of the player and not influence characteristics of the aircraft.

I also find it frustrating that it is possible to taxi helicopters with wheeled landing gear when using advanced but you can't with standard.

At on there would be no problems if the advanced flight model has been adapted for management from a mouse + the keyboard.

Except such "adaptation" would be difficult, since this flight model is designed to be realistic. Nobody flies real aircraft with on-off controls. If you get realistic enough, an analog control of some sort is practically a must.

Yes, but there shouldn't be a restriction in achievement of the maximum speed on the simplified control system.

I appreciate all the answers, lots of insightful information to take in here.

I just don't understand the decision on having the gold medal requirement the same for both controls, when the two control systems are so different.

I'm trying to get 100% achievements on this game, but I am not a natural helicopter virtuoso, which it seems one has to be or spend many hours to become just to be able to get a gold medal on these time trials, by learning how to master Advanced flight model.

The two could have their own individual leaderboards as well, but I suppose it's a bit late to come up with something like that now, since the DLC isn't exactly brand new..

In my opinion there should be two different sets of medal requirement for the two control system.

Well, imo, if you want to get 100% achievements, you just have to get really good. It is not *collecting* medals, it is *achieving* them at the highest difficulty. I don't mind at all that some achievements are brutal, as long as they are achievable it's fine. These are for the people that really really want it. If you get them, you can be proud and get the bragging rights :-)
