Do smoke nades really lag you out?

Recommended Posts

Earlier this evening, I decided to try MP again. I do that about once every 6 months, but it´s time to get more into MP I guess.

Well, I died a lot, but killed many too.

Situation: Someone throws smoke nades in the area with our flag. I just picked up a grenade launcher.. *evil grin*. The eh.. not so very smart person throwing those nades were standing about in the middle of the smoke, and I could see the outline of him. Checked ammo status and oh well, what the heck.. fired the rest of the nades left in his direction. He died screaming.

Empy, switched to pistol, noticing how the smoke did not lag at all on my screen, even though I was not the one throwing it, it never caused any kind of problems. Crosshair mode was on as usual, and i hate that, I always play in vet with crosshair on, so I slowly walked through the smoke while aiming with the pistol. Spotted a sniper on the other side of the smoke, he was crouching and reloading when he looked up. Too late.. pow-pow-pow.

So, the smoke helped me a lot, even though I did not throw it, could it be that the guy throwing it froze due to lag? He seemed to not move very much, so I´m not sure. The other one was fast, but I was faster (for once), and he was if not surrounded by smoke, covered by some of it too.

Will other players scream "cheater!! u haxxor!!" if / when I throw smoke nades? It is a way of survival i.r.l. for crying out load.. just wondering so that I don´t make peeps hating my online nick.

Well what somke does is it impacts your framerate especially on low end machines, weak vid. cards. It does not have much to do with MP in terms of bit's n Bites, but it's an issue of possibly disabling the ability of players with low end PC's to defend themselves.

If you knew how smoke is generated on a PC you would seldom look at it and say "how pretty"... wink.gif

Yes its not nice to see your PC go boom and release a smoke cloud... Although it is much nicer effect than in any game I have seen tounge.gif

Just a side question that I was always wondering about. If I deactivate smoke on my client, will it still show up in MP games ?

You should know better  biggrin.gif

No but I want to know if others can. That would be good to know, so we can adjust our tacs according to this. Anyway, we are off from laddering at the moment, cause a lot of guys within our team are a bit tired of OFP, so no danger for anyone.

It´s not that I need the smoke that much, but it really is useful in MP. I wish it was never a framerate issue for anyone in the first place. It looks cool when you walk through the smoke with a big badass gun Dolph Lundgren style biggrin.gif

Just got back from Tournament - never tried it before and it was quite fun, but not my thing I guess. Never heard of it until I tried.

If you deactivate smoke on your machine it should still show up in MP games. wow.gif Use at your discretion.

If I had a machine with a benchmark of 1100 and the opposition would keep smoking me out to 2fps, I would shut smoke off... smile.gif

Same thing happens in RvS, smoke is intense, people with fast machines/Vid. cards use it alot, however there should be relief to users with low end PC's...

low FPS is a huge disadvantage, my machine when fps gets low on maps that dont think about ppl on 1ghz or less its veryvery hard to aim with iron sights and sniperrifles or map small mouse movements cos they dont respond, positives r u get no recoil and can walk thru walls.

I've got a pretty good computer, and smoke drops my FPS pretty good when I'm in it. As long as I'm about 10m away or further it doesn't effect me.

I see. Then I will not be using smoke nades at all in MP, or at least not until further notice. Am joining Seawolves, and the last thing I would want is being called a cheater! biggrin.gif I am only for fair play anyway.

I love my smoke nades, and the lag isnt that bad, it makes me think more before moving though.

Green smoke nades are the best!
