Mister Frag 0 Posted November 1, 2002 It sounds like you need to tweak your video settings to make the image brighter and/or get more contrast. Load the "Find the Car" single-player mission, and play with the monitor controls as well as the settings in the Video Options dialog. Also, keep in mind that all soldiers wear some sort of camouflage, so they are supposed to be hard to see.
ralphwiggum 6 Posted November 1, 2002 steal the car. for identification, look at their uniform. not guns.
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted November 1, 2002 There is a system for this: East soldier characteristics: Light camo pattern. Mixes a light olive green with lighter colors, creating an almost snowy look. Olive drab helmet. No camo cover. Officers wear a black beret. Usually the game selects the whitest, pastiest faced soldiers to be Russians, so that's a little tip for ya. Also, no black guys in the Red Army. East crewmen wear all black pajama lookin things. East pilots look alot like West pilots, so just shoot first and ask later. Spetsnaz wear bandannas. West grunts: Woodland camo. They are darker than Russian units, and on an island like Nogova that is a real difference to take advantage of. The West helmet is a variant of the classic "Fritz" helmet, sporting a woodland camo cover. West officers wear a camo pattern cap, NOT a black beret. that is a dead giveaway right there. West crewman wear an odd looking helmet with large earphones built into them. West pilots... see above. West Blackops come in two flavors: black pajama with balaclava, or woodland camo with fritz helmet plus balaclava
Chronicles 0 Posted November 1, 2002 Your screen resolution plays an important role too. I am stuck in 800*600 to have a smooth OFP , but if i up the resolution to 1024*768 i can see really well an opposite soldier in the distance. Between those 2 resolutions, there is really a big difference, so i suppose that with higher resolution that 1024*768 it is more obvious to recognize the side of a soldier. So if your PC can, push up the resolution. One tip i can give to you if you begin to play , when you are on patrol, searching for an opposing force , go prone often in the woods and brush , then do not move , even in the lower resolution, if there is someone you will be able to notice him at the horizon, then carefully try to see what is the kind of camo he has . With lot of training, you will be able to notice really the difference, even in forest at night The first times i played OFP , i team killed a lot of friendly AI (and they will killed me back a lot too ) , but now it never happens anymore. Training all the way And remember , if you are not sure, but the guy you spotted fire at you or to your squad , open fire , 99% you will be right
edc 0 Posted November 1, 2002 With pilots there is a difference-Commie pilots have white helmuts and West pilots have green helmuts(the same green as their uniforms.)
Die Alive 0 Posted November 1, 2002 I remember back in my early days of OFP, I was a black op (in a user made mission where I wasn't the leader) and I lawed a tank or something. So a bit later, I see some guys in all black running 100m away, and I'm like shit, they're running to the next waypoint or objective. So I start to run after them. They head over a hill and when I get to the other side, the 3 of them were laying prone. I jog up to them, and I notice they didn't have MP5s, but AK!!! Oh fuck, they were crew from the tank! I blasted them where they layed. That was a funny moment for me. -=Die Alive=-

ralphwiggum 6 Posted November 1, 2002 or here is a dumb way. if you see someone coming towards you, take cover, and aim at him. if he sees you AND fires at you, then he is enemy. ofcourse, you should be ready to shoot him when aiming at him.
Jamesia 0 Posted November 1, 2002 on my PC, the soldiers tend to be, sort of a light colour, and really stick out against the scenery.
Spitfire 0 Posted November 1, 2002 The poor resolution of any monitor (compared to real life vision) causes the same problem that exists in almost every 3d-game. This becomes a true issue in flight simulators such as Falcon 4.0. It's far easier to successfully identify distant targets in real life. That's why game developers have implemented some "viewing aids" to games, like labels and such. Too bad the labels in OFP can be exploited too easily and they work at an unrealistic range, so using them pretty much kills the fun. A workaround would be to add some more variation to the uniforms. It would affect the realism, though, since uniforms are quite realistically modelled, but it would make it easier to identify friends and foes.
USMC Sniper 0 Posted November 1, 2002 The ROE of the US Army is do not fire until fired upon. So just wait till they open fire.
Tovarish 0 Posted November 2, 2002 Well I saw this, thread, and I had the same problem when I started out, and I know everyone who starts playing this game has the same problem...and I had a little time on my hands so I decided to make this graphic of the basic soldier classes of each side . Hope it helps. P.S. I have a higher quality version of this, the res is something like 1680x1680, and it's a bit over 300k. If anyone wants that one, PM me.
