Trying to enjoy ARMA3

Recommended Posts

I'm a long time OFP fan and i've been struggling with ARMA3. I struggle with finding good missions and content which require no mods/addons (or at least a reasonable list) I know there's lots out there, but filtering through the masses and masses of content is off putting after sifting through a few pages on armaholic/Steam Workshop. I enjoy dynamic infantry based missions / battles with pre-programmed support (e.g friendly tanks rolling in).

Another problem which takes the fun away is most missions are Squad leader based; I enjoyed being a grunt and taking orders. Another big enjoyment factor of this were the on-screen markers the squad leaders made for me (TARGET THAT RIFLEMAN). I have a hard time acquiring targets now thanks to the amazing graphical fidelty of todays games, if there was some way to allow for on-screen indicators for squad leaders that would also be great. The teammates shout of vague directions and bearings I have no idea what to shoot at.

I enjoy Whole Lotta Altis but I feel like i'm the only one doing anything? Other than random enemy APCs rolling up and blowing up our light infantry squad there's no sense of progression/friendly forces? I know this is a community mission and not a game issue though. I enjoy dynamic stuff and small skirmishes. Also my AI mates walk around instead of run which drives me nuts!

Lastly, not sure if i'm doing something wrong but the sights are totally broken for me? There's a crazy deadzone-sway (like Red Orchestra) on all sight based aiming. From what I can tell this is fatigue and this new weapon inertia business?

edit: Altis is a HUGE map, i'd love a mission to keep coming back to - even if it's exploring (no combat, maybe orienteering?), or with random battles on the map to make use of the many locations.

Sway is indeed quite large, but mannagable. Things that are good to know:

stamina affects sway (might want to use ShackTac stamina bar, at least untill you can estimate it on your own)

health affects sway

First Aid Kits restore health only to 75%, so if wounded your sway will be stronger untill medic takes care of you

sights will be unstable for a while, after you stop moving

there's key to stabilize sight for few seconds (by deafult holding RMB, I suggest rebind it)

Also aiming deadzone is pretty bad compared to ArmA2, turning it off might be the best choice

Sounds like you might enjoy either the HETMAN mission and/or the Alive Mod module which populated the whole island with battles and conflicts raging all over.

As far as nailing down where the enemy is, I agree this, especially the vague vocal shouts can be totally fubar'ed. "Rifleman 75, Front!" -where? who. what front? Why did you yell 75 when he was actually 5m away? Why is he yelling out sometimes Friendlies as "Rifleman" rather than "Enemy".

Personally, I like the recruit level helpers, such as the red reticule which is mercifully NOT always accurate as well as those peripheral colored blobs that I find fantastic as they are easily missed if not paying attention. Of course it's impossible or very near to have AI squaddies yell, "Enemy, 50, inside/behind/upstairs/near/...that Church!"....but that would be amazing.

If you're holding right mouse to zoom in with a scope, be aware that it is also bound to hold breath. You can only hold breath for something like 6 seconds before the scope sways again; unfortunately by default hold breath and zoom are both bound to right mouse.

I use freetrack to zoom view for target acquisition and then short right mouse holds to stabilise the scope. Zoom or hold breath really need to be controlled by different keys/controls.

Also recommend the shactac fatigue bar, it helps massively to manage your fatigue state :)

You could always check out the promoted MANW entries, there's some great SP and MP content there! :)

The 'Editor'....

Learn to love it.. It will open this series up for you like you've never seen before. Its not hard to use and will make this game/series anything you want it to be, with the help of some mod/addons, even moreso.

Small missions, to a whole gaming world, the best is really only available via the 'Editor' and no you don't need scripting knowledge, it helps, but you don't need it, there are simple command/script lines available off the shelf (if you like), to put into the init field, that will make big changes to the game. Turn it into something much greater..

Why is using the Editor the best way to play, because it will give you, your minds eye view of the game 'you' want to play. Exactly how you want to play it.

Just my opinion..

Slogan: Give a good home to the BI 'Editor', it deserves it... Love it and keep it warm..;):p

i couldn't agree more! The scope sway is hilariously annoying the hell outta me even when my gun is already on a bipod >_< it feels like the shooter is drunk or on crack lol XD
