What hardware specs should I look at?

Right now I am looking to setup a VDS, and I am trying to decide on what is more important for this. I checked the specs on the Wki but there seems to have been non listed, it is empty.

Anyways, is it going to be more CPU or Ram intensive? I am looking between a Server that has 8 gigs of ram, and moderate computing power, or one that has 4 gigs of ram, and a lot of computing power. I plan to host no more than 10 people, but a lot of AI on the map. Which should I focus on more? Is 4 gigs of ram enough and I should focus on the CPU? Or vice versa?

Its all about the cpu

Perfect setup:

• Fastest & latest Quad core cpu (anything higher than 3.0ghz)
  
• Based on what looks like is coming around the corner, 8GB ram
  

This will allow you to run 1 * Arma Server instance and 1 * headless client instance which will allow you to run the highest number of AI possible without using a caching system , eg addons like @Alive etc

Next best setup

• Same CPU
  
• 4GB ram
  

This will allow you to run just the dedi server exe and then background apps such as the o/s etc

(There are tweaks currently W.I.P that will allow more ram useage, Am guessing but would say for that, having 8Gb ram would cover such future changes)

Specifically for COOPS & ai

Typical performance for a dedi server with 30-50 clients on a 100mb connection with a decent rig at the moment allows something like 100-200 AI before the fps drops below 20 (Much more if using a caching system)

The threshold where the fps starts to be dramaticaly affected seems to be somewhere around 25-35 players

With you only hosting for 10, that wouldn't seem to be an issue but i dont know how many AI you could run for those few players, maybe double that

Performance for multiplayer especially Dedi servers is currently W.I.P so it can only get better

Best advice, Buy the fastest CPU you can afford.

RAM is cheap, providing the motherboard has enough slots, you can always add more at a later date

I'm going to hijack this thread - My GU are currently out looking for a new dedicated server.

I've been put in charge of finding us a proper one with the ability to run atleast a private server and a Headless Client to supplement it - If we can run a TS or a public server on the same dedi, it will just be an added bonus.

So far Hetzner has been suggested to me, and I've found this server that should be able to support our needs, but I would like some eyes on the solution I'm thinking about.

If a person with more knowledge about the A3 Server performance and server hardware could take a look at the link provided and give me some much needed help, my GU and I would be forever grateful!

Actually the i7 4770 probably has better single thread performance so it should be better for ArmA.

I'm thinking the 4770, would limit us to only running one server and a HC client, not allowing us a public server on the same box or the ability to run a TS - But of course, the money we save buying your suggestion could go towards investing in a TS server hosted elsewhere, they don't cost much these days.

But I'm a bit curious as to know what I can expect in performance from the Ex40. But thanks for the suggestion, I will look into it.

TeamSpeak shouldn't be a problem, it's not that resource hungry.

What kind of player slots would you be looking at? A while ago I had a i7 2600 that ran fine 4 DayZ servers and 1 Wasteland server with the total players somewhere around 150-200.

I don't think 2 instances both with headless clients would be a problem, if it is just rent another server and the total sum is still close to the px90 but you get more bang for your buck.

Its always the same requirements NPK, fastest quad core intel you can afford, xeon equivalent in preference to an I7, enterprise standard hardware, lets say 4gb ram / server and 2 for other things and enough hard drive space for the server install and mods.

This question has been raised and answered many times now.

Google for the xeon/I7 chips that will give you an idea how good the chip is that the hosters provide.

We run with 2 * older Xeon X5570's,

This does us okay, allowing us to run 3 * A3 servers at any 1 time for up to 50 coop players each so anything better than that will be good

Ditch the VDS and get a fully dedicated, and unmanaged server. You will be paying slightly more but will have loads of more performance for your A3 server, it will be worth it! I use some old 1u dual cpu 2.5ghz quad core xeons with little ram and they run fine with 45 players on a small mission file for stratis wasteland =D

Gets you a quad+HT sandy bridge 3.2ghz xeon, 8gb ram, 1TB storage (total - raid 1) and 1gbps bandwidth for €29 + €19 windows license. Its got a Ts, arma 2 OA and arma 3 server chugging away quite merrily on it. There also a 5% off code we used, not sure if its still valid though - OPSWIFT5

If you can afford the one off €55 setup fee then the i5 4670/16gb ram/240gb SSD for €35 deal looks pretty good as well.
