x3kj 1247 Posted November 13, 2013 (edited) What would happen if i were to build a small city, and instead of using the "terrain mesh" as ground, i use objects for road etc, while the actual ground is below basement level ? So basically everything is on stilts... Could the AI cope with driving on the roads if all road lod is set up correctly or are weird glitches to be expected? What will happen with lighting underground, would the sun just shine through or would it be completely dark? Edited November 13, 2013 by Fennek
m1lkm8n 411 Posted November 14, 2013 That would require a lot of work, custom buildings and such. As well as keeping the ai from not pulling over and blowing their brains out ;). Perhaps a better idea, although still very extensive would be to try and create a terrain with a small enough cell size that you could lower down a bit creating a square in the terrain mesh and then lower the structure into the hole. As far as lighting goes I'm pretty sure it'll lit. Afaik the engine doesn't do underground so if its light out it'll be lit if its dark it'll be dark. x3kj 1247 Posted November 14, 2013 (edited) Hm i already feared as much. The whole underground thing wouldn't feel right if it's lit. A narrow ungerground bunker won't give that atmosphere ... it's just an ordinary room with no windows... so propably not worth all the hazzle. And i meant custom buildings of course. granQ 293 Posted November 16, 2013 we done it a few time, but not for entire cites, but just a few special buildings. Lets say you have grid size 7 meters, just make a big "square" hole, and put your building on top. We got one "standard house with basement" and a secret bunker. Sure it is just a "room without windows" but our basement actually got windows :)
m1lkm8n 411 Posted November 17, 2013 Yea I've done it on a terrain. Had and underground bunker with rocks and trees covering it. Was actually pretty cool but totally a pita to create and like you said def not for a whole city.

You could ask for a way to block out the light on the FT. Like a material type.
oldbear 390 Posted November 17, 2013 To make an underground structure, it must be built on purpose as an object and laid down in a hole. You can have a look at a fantastic underground structure on Namalsk. Inside the structure, the AI is burning its brain and tend to have weird behavior. Outside, it tend to avoid walking on it/near it.

Yep, my experience is AI either on foot or in vehicles freak out in, around and above layered structures.

I mentioned city on stilts, just because i dont know how dense the arma terrain mesh is (e.g. how fine you can make holes). But if AI freaks out it's not worth it. A large city with many basements that can just be used by players is not very usefull at all.
