Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted August 11, 2002 Dreams are a filtration process. It is the transition of short-term memory into the long-term-memory, and what is not relevant is thrown out. I guess this is the cause for this odd mixture of phantasies and real experiences.
Guest Posted August 11, 2002 I read an interesting article in Nature a couple of years ago. A research team had been monitoring the EM signature of the brain to see what areas of the brain were active when we are dreaming. Their conclusion was that dreams are just a method for the brain to see if you are awake; i.e it takes random signals from long and short-term memory and presents them to another part of the brain (neo cortex) that compares the signals to the sensory inputs it is getting from the sensory system. If the neo cortex doesn't find the difference, then you are asleep. If it reacts to the difference then you wake up. So dreams were according to that theory a way for the brain to see if you are still sleeping or if you are awake. What is interesting about the theory is that it shoots all Freudian ideas of dream interpretation to hell. The dreams you dream are just random non-processed elements from your memory. Â Normally just before I'll fall asleep, if i'm thinking about something i'll start seeing it. Â It's like i'm half into sleep and half out of it. Â Same thing when I just wake up. Â It's rather cool!<span id='postcolor'> Let me inform everyone that the master of horror, Edgar Allan Poe, would train himself to enter this stage of being both awake and asleep, for the very purpose of hallucinating. He claimed to get inspiration for many of his stories from those hallucinations. This is not a joke b.t.w.<span id='postcolor'> I do that all the time.... Just not entirely by my own will. Ive tried numerious times laying in my bed. Awaken, but unable to move, or breath properly... well, I can breath, but i cant controll my breathing, its automatic. I can sometimes open my eyes an inch and just look, but not much, and since I cant move, theres no purpose. If im very willing, I can wake myself by trying to shake drastically, which isnt really much, but its enough to wake me.. most of the times. Anyway, while I lay there, I can controll my dreams, fly if I want to... I can tell to myself, Sleep, sleep, and then im sleeping while I controll my dreams. Pretty nice, but it gets frustrading just laying there.
KingBeast 0 Posted August 11, 2002 When I was younger and occassionally had those vivid scary nightmares, I could always eventaully get out of them by waking myself up. Sometimes in the dream I would close my eyes so i didnt see anything (monsters and such) and then tell myself to wake up, and when I did I would have this great feeling of euphoria. I made myself wake up and I wasnt having the nightmare anymore. Other times, I realise its a nightmare and all of a sudden it just isnt scary anymore. Those times are funny I havent read this thread entirely, but has anyone had those dreams where you are falling, and then you wake up and it feels like you just landed on your bed and are bouncing a little? As thoguh you really did fall onto your bed?
Espectro (DayZ) 0 Posted August 11, 2002 Ya, i do. they mostly come when sitting on the couch getting more and more tired. Then u fell asleep for a second or something, but wakes up thinking u just fell. The bouncing is because you tried avoiding hitting the ground headfirst
Col. Kurtz 0 Posted August 11, 2002 Very Crazy. Seems I not the only one with whacky dreams. I once had this dream, I was a mercenary and I was in a field. All this arty was falling around me sending up mushroomsa of dirt and smoke. Then suddenly i was in a really narrow snowy valley that ended in a cave. there were two terrorists wearing Baliclavasm and I droped them with my M16A1. Pretty scary consedering I was about 10. My dreams change very quickly, yet are still connected. And they are always whacky. Last night for example part of my dream was abbondening a passenger ship. The thing was, it was almost as if the scenario kept of replaying. It happened again and again. Heres something to think about. When you fall asleep, you kinda lose consciounes. You stop thinking. Your body is on auto pilot. Yet, I never can remember when I lose conscionus. Just happens and I lose all memory of what I was thinking before I sliped off to this state. cybrid 0 Posted August 11, 2002 Whats really weird is when I dream from a third person perspective and I'm watching myself but don't seem to have any control on the situation. Does anyone have and OFP dreams like the ones I posted in my "I had a Dream" thread? That was a great thread
ran 0 Posted August 11, 2002 wtf is up with ya guys , some of you really frighten me dreaming about slaughters , bloody murders , suicides ad so ? did you consider visiting a psychiatrist ?
DarkLight 0 Posted August 11, 2002 Well actually i sometimes do get the feeling that it's time to visit a doctor. I can understand if you have dreams like this just a couple times but i have them a lot. And it always seems to involve executing people but never with a lot of blood (no exploding heads or something like that). If i don't dream stuff like this, i dream about really bizar things... And i always dream very detailed. Oh well, i'm not gonna visit some doctor and pay that guy a lot for some dreams...

zverushka 0 Posted August 11, 2002 My dreams make NO sense whatsoever. They're just random nonsense. Example: I see an old, old, ooold friend from like 8 years ago. He starts shooting at an crowd of people. They all drop, and I gto around the dead people, everything is hazy and misty and foggy. I see they're horribly deformed faces and one guy's head is opened like a nut with a grey, slimy liquid and blood coming out. I then see 10 girls dead in the most horrible way. I then shake hands with my friend. He gives me his gun (AK-47) , and shoot myself. I then, in third person, with almost no head, just goryness, shoot his head off. (I'm dead). Then, I fall in a heap and I see myself in third person with my head blown off, and again, there's horrible blood and terrible goryness. It's misty, a dark mist. I then see an atom bomb explosion in the distance. and dead bodies start to rain down on my gory body, and I walk around, with almost no head, just goryness, and shoot myself with the gun, and don't drop, I shoot myself till my body is also just gore. Then, various pieces of my body, one by one, fall off and I wake up. No joke, I had it this morning, freaaaky.
morbid 0 Posted August 11, 2002 Many of my dreams are wierd fantastcial sci-fi stuff, some are just plain boring and a few are of real life. Col. Kurtz 0 Posted August 12, 2002 I had a OFP dream once. I was playing OFP, but OFP was real life. I was on the west, and the east was attacking the hill I was on. I had a LAW, and I fired it. I wanted to get out my M16, but I couldnt. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldnt get the LAW out of my hands. Thre was a Soviet soldier above me pointing his rifle at me. But he did not fire. I managed to change my weapon, but then I was on a train....... Another crazy dream.
Col. Kurtz 0 Posted August 12, 2002 All my dreams are from a 3rd person perspective. And Ive had those killing self dreams too. Like sitting on top of a hill, then shooting my self with a .22 through the bottom of my head. I fall over, but get up again and are alive yet dead. VERY FREAKY! chris330 0 Posted March 5, 2003 Cant say I have ever had anything quite as horrid as some of htese account but I do have mad nonsense dreams. Often i'm being chased. Then at the end I'm somewhere where lots of spiders start asppearing and no-one else in the dream seems bothered by it. I used to often also have dreams where the other people in the dream could go somewhere I couldn't. Like we'd be having lots of fun, I'd lose concentration for a second and they'd move on behind some wall or gate, or i'd be transported to another part of the building where I couldn't get there. If and when I did finally get there they would always have finished the party and dispersed. I often see tornadoes (not the planes) in my dreams too. On many occassions though, my dreams are very pleasant indeed!!!
