Severe Image Tearing of visuals [Alpha 0.5.102571]

Recommended Posts

Getting bad tearing of in-game visuals once spawned into the world.

Has all the hallmarks of being a Vsync issue, but neither the ArmA Vsync or the Nvidia driver Vsync has any effect. It also occurs in visuals projected at framrates less then the monitors refresh rate of 60hz.

Since FRAPS and Screenshots can not record the effect, I initially suspected a hardware problem, but it is visible on different monitors of different sizes and specs.

ASUS VS278Q-P 27" LED LCD @ 1920x1080 1MS response time.

Samsung 2343BWX 23" LCD @ 2048x1152 5MS response time.

Sharp Aquos 42" LCD Television @ 1920x1080

This problem only happens in ArmA.... all my other games are fine and run at much higher FPS.

This video clip shows the example more clearly using the Kamino Lighthouse.

Note that from one angle, the Lighthouse shows very little if any tearing of the image, but when viewed from the opposite side, very pronounced shearing is visible.

The only connection appears to be framerate. When the FPS is solid at 60FPS, tearing is not noticeable. When the FPS is below 60 and fluctuates up and down, the displayed image becomes prone to tearing.

to be clear, do you have v-sync on?

edit: and are you running "fullscreen", and not just a borderless window at your native res:? (I've noticed v-sync doesn't work in that situation)

Yes.

V-Sync is on. I'ved tried in on and off.

I've also tried enabling the Nvidia Adaptive V-Sync on and off. Driver 314.07

The game is running full screen.

I've even tried it on different monitors, including a 42" television.

It's odd that it is not consistent... and that it isn't apparent if the frame rate in game is over 60FPS (or solid 60 in this case). It gets very noticeable when the FPS is lower then 60.

Meh tearing has does not bother me I all ways turn V sync off.

But I can understand for some it could be a problem and it does not work then yeah needs looking at.

But first they need to start optimising the game befor they worry about any thing else.

did you try nvidia vsync not adaptive vsync, sometimes the adaptive vsync fails at times.

yeah, I don't use it either, but that's weird it's not doing what it's supposed to do

Yes.

I am convinced that this is a V-Sync problem.

Adaptive V-Sync does not work in ArmA 3: Alpha. It over-rides the ingame VSync mode (as it should).

Well it works... but ArmA 3 tears all the time, regardless of FPS, unless some form of Vsync is enabled. Because adaptive V-Sync turns on and off automatically... when the FPS is below 60.... there is no Vsync and you get screen tearing. This is why the Lighthouse example shows no screen tears when FPS is 60, and lots of tearing when the FPS is anything less the 60 while viewing the Lighthouse.

So... adaptive VSync is working exactly as it should.... but ArmA 3 has an image tearing problem and must have VSync on all the time.

This is bad news, because VSync sucks in general and has pronounced drawbacks to performance in gaming.

:(

I hope, as we go forward, BIS can stabilize the Image tearing so I am not shackled by VSync
