US Army Direct Action Element Work-in-Progress

Recommended Posts

Hello. I've began work on an 1st SFOD-D/Delta Force addon. Knowing how they change their name alot, for the purposes of ArmA 3 they are called the Direct Action Element (basically like Combat Applications Group or Army Compartmented Element). It will mainly consist of different vests, uniforms, and helmets. There will be an actual faction for these guys but for the duration of the Alpha and Beta it'll just be gear.

For now, I've got the Crye Precision CAGE Plate Carrier in Multicam. The Multicam pattern seen is a modification of AlexVestin's hd multicam pattern that he released for ArmA 2. It has been recolored to match the ArmA 3 Multicam pattern.

If any addonmakers would like to use this pattern, just send me a PM.

I like the idea, but as I've been "warned" by a particular person the acronym you have chosen has apparently been "copy-righted" without the rest of the world knowing. You may be approached and asked to change it as well. But, until then, keep up the great ideas.

^That. Avoid CAG or ACE, it's always safer to stick with Delta (seems to work well for everyone else)..

Ok, will do.

EDIT: I need a mod to change the title, right? If so, could any mod who sees this remove the "(ACE)" from the title?

YEah I though this had to do with Advanced Combat Environment, but I am happy to hear about this also. Thanks for the effort and keep up the good work.

Edit: You can call it that but if you use ACE many players may get confused like I was

So, I think I gotta get a moderator to change it. Sorry for the confusion guys.

EDIT: I've decided to name them Direct Action Element. They're still Delta Force though. It's like Combat Applications Group or Army Compartmented Element. I've PM'd a mod to change it. So, hopefully it will be changed by tomorrow.

Looking great. If you need any help, I'm a giant gear buff, so if you need any specifics on manufacturers, camo patterns, gear types and etc, lemme know. I'll probably end up sending you a PM of suggestions anyway because you seem to know what you're doing.

Keep it up!

I like what I see, but how is this shirt different from the standard MTP shirt in Arma 3?

The normal combat shirt in Arma 3 is cut like on the old British CS95 UBACS shirt, with a few elements of the Crye shirt like the integrated elbow pads and choice of colours.

The real Crye shirts have a different cut where the light-coloured wicking material that covers the torso of the shirt, also runs down the undersides on the arms as well, which is what antoine has altered the textures to do. UBACS just has a wicking torso with normal sleeves.

I'm sure he's made other changes to make it closer to the Crye shirt as well.

Nope. All I did was change the color of the light-colored moisture-wicking material to be, well, light colored. The undersides on the arms are already there. This shirt is a Crye Combat shirt. And it's definitely Multicam, not MTP.

so, @ItsThomas: I made the moisture-wicking part light-colored like the Crye Precision Gen 2 Combat Shirt. And I made the CAGE Plate Carrier Multicam. So far, that's it. I'm working on helmets right now. Might do some Gen 3 or Gen 1 stuff too.

They are? Okay, I was just going off what I can remember from the old publicity images. Didn't notice the cut of the shirt textures had been changed since then to include the underarm wicking; not even since I've been playing the alpha.

Even so, the models have retained the UBACS-style pockets which is what initially made me think "Oh cool, they're wearing British uniforms", way back when the first screens came out. :D

Have always been aware that the camo pattern is really Multicam rather than actual MTP though, even though it's called 'MTP' ingame (what with the multicam name being trademarked).

The problem is that the cut isn't right. The moisture-wicking part doesn't cover half the bicep like it should. And I didn't realize that's why they called it MTP. I thought they were actually calling it the British MTP (Multi-Terrain Pattern).

Anyway, another WIP image. This one is an experimental uniform copied from the Iranian uniform (NATO is the underdog now so they are trying to catch up :p ) :

Oh, god not that retarded uniform. Looks like some shit out of sci-fi or Crysis.

Personally, I could do without the helmet. But the uniform is okay.

Anywho, about the actual mod! It's beautiful! Can't wait to see more!

I think the issue there is that 'Multicam' is a trademark of CryePresision, so they would have had to pay for it just to change one word, which isn't really worth it.

Underarm wicking is present in real life british UBACS (I know a desert MTP one), actually. The shirt isn´t crye, it´s a mix between the UBACS and the crye combat shirt, since the model itself appears to be a rework of the BAF shirt. That´s why there´s still the wonky velcro and the small brown patch on the pocketflap where the british flag was on the BAF models.

The very first announcement of Arma 3 also did not mention US troops, but only british troops (SBS), which Miller was part of. Then they quickly moved to the "Europe´s captured and hard pressed" and then came the Lemnos incident and everything changed. Shortly prior to that they introduced the US 7th ID as being the element concerned with the Lemnos/Altis area.

Which is probably why there´s this wild mix of uniform parts on these models. I actually prefer the way Sabre has set up his retextures, where the pockets have large vertical, non-split strips of velcro on the pocket and on the flap, and IR tabs on the flap. Maybe the normals could be altered in these to make the pockets better too, and add US Flags to them that way?

Crysis was set in 2020... And there's already a working cloaking camo. And Glasses-mountable HUDs are already available.

Yeah, but there isn't plastic neckguards. That is shit that will never see use, because it'd be uncomfortable, hot, and would add zero protection. The plastic wrist guards are ridiculous looking to. It's a future that isn't gonna happen.

What the fuck are you on about with the cloaking camouflage and glasses-mountable HUD... I am talking about the ridiculous Iranian uniform, filled with roller skater wrist guards and idiotic looking spine-protector. Not to mention whatever that fan mounted thing is on the back. With zero actual body armor to be seen anywhere. It's a ridiculous uniform and BI dropped the ball on that one.

It's your mod, man do what you want, but that uniform looks silly.

It's not a plastic neckguard though. It's like a cooling suit of some kind. I'm talking about "sci fi" technology in general. If there are people already getting cloaks to work, what makes you think that some cooling suit (that clearly is armored) is unrealistic? I can understand if you think it looks silly. But to say it's sci fi, well, it's really not. The cloak thing is also in reference to Crysis, which you brought up for comparison.

The neck guards are part of the thermal camouflage antoine talked about. The suit has a thermal regulation system underneath that carries body-heat away to the heat sink on the back, instead of radiating all around. This isn´t a new Idea, and thermal bodysuits have been in use for a long while, particularily in aeronautics and space suit engineering. Miniaturizing such a system and mass producing it for use in a military Uniform is not such a weird thought.

And the helmet represents a clearly redfor inspired design Idea, instead of the Blufor "Let´s put rails on it so we can load it down with stuff." they decided to keep it clean and add everything possibly needed (and affordable) into it without any large degree of modification. Instead, they will likely have specialty helmets for specialty purposes (as for example the Russians do, and have since Soviet times.).

This suit (if it were modelled correctly, which it isn´t in Arma 3 right now: Opfor thermal signatures are way too bright) would give you a distinct advantage in a battlefield observed with modern imaging technology: the one who sees first can move first, and shoot first. With thermally sealed face masks, the only things that would glow brightly at long ranges are the heat sinks on the back. If your army is an attack army, you calculate your troops facing forwards most of the time, so it doesn´t matter as much as the blufor problem of not having thermal bodycamouflage at all.

And really, we have been working on thermal camouflage for planes, helicopters and tanks since the 70s, at least. To see working thermal camouflage on the battlefield of 2030 is hardly "sci-fi" (A term which I do not like being used so negatively as it is, being thrown around here by people who do not like the future setting.)

You may not like the Suit aesthetically. Okay. I didn´t like the M1 Abrams aesthetically in any game ever. But if this is the way it is, it´s the way it is.

Anyways, I like seeing these develop, and grow. Hope to see this finished!

Cheerio
