sudayev 27 Posted December 7, 2012 I was reading about Novaya Zemlya, and found a community website from Belushya Guba, the major settlement on the island. This picture depicts a ship, that's for sure. The ship looks like a civilian hauler (no naval ensign), but why there is a freaking CIWS mounted at the bow of the ship? Times where freighters had to carry AA guns have passed about sixty years ago. Maybe this isn't a civilian ship at all? Maybe they use CIWS to crush icefloes and big chunks of ice? http://www.belushka.narod.ru/users2/newland_gr/slides/newland_gr-46.html
dm 9 Posted December 7, 2012 Could be one of the so-called "spy trawlers" Tho I guess having a CIWS on the bow would give it away pretty quick...
walker 0 Posted December 7, 2012 Hi all Trawlers are often dual use Fishing in Peace Time and as Mine Sweepers in War time. The Ak-630 CIWS could just be an example of the Russians preinstalling just in case. Or it could be a military research vessel. Kind Regards walker
NoRailgunner 0 Posted December 7, 2012 Or someone just tested this CIWS variant on this ship and left it there? Novaya Zemlya was and still is a military area. Russians are pragmatic eg putting a CIWS on a trawler = stronger trawler = saves cash - no need to buy new expensive guard ships = more money for Vodka. :p
walker 0 Posted December 7, 2012 Hi all Would make an interesting bate ship for Somalia. A video for adverts on Cinema TV and DVD Videos released in the area of some Somali Pirate Boats being turned to red mist might have a sobering effect. Then put up some signs at Somalian ports. "Am I the bate ship?" With a red mist blob and a sinking boat. Might make an interesting Hollywood film Plot. Kind Regards walker
JdB 151 Posted December 7, 2012 Some navies employ ships that are primarily crewed by civilian staff but armed to defend themselves. Some countries paint theirs in the same color as the other navy ships (US navy), other have a civilian paintjob (Australians for example). Primarily used for construction, disaster relief, resupply of non-combatants and research IIRC. Maybe Sudayev's link shows the Russian equivalent ... http://www.navyrecognition.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=
MAVEN 1 Posted December 8, 2012 Take a look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhkZwZ2h2uA and this also see CIWS in use Now you know why ;) Those waters are rarely used, so it's possible for this territory to become hostile sometimes. As for spy-camo thing, imho that's BS. If someone wants to spy on someone, he uses satelites, drones, computer networks, not a civillian ship with CIWS mount that's visible. Anyway, who cares about it seriously? Take a look at all that beautiful nature! - http://www.belushka.narod.ru/users2/newland_gr/newland_gr2.html
