ACR - Patrol: Died, failed mission, but can't revert to previous save.

Recommended Posts

I was nearly finished the 2nd ACR mission: "Patrol". I was rearming my soldiers after clearing a "suspicious area" and an AT soldier came out of the forest and took out the Pandur ( I was not onboard at the time). The mission then "Failed". I thought to my self- "no bother I'll just revert to the last save". But I can't, after clicking "Continue" when the mission failed it seems I have to restart the mission from scratch.

I have to admit, I don't have that much experience with the Arma campaign save system. But shouldn't my last User save be at least be available? I know there are two types of save in Arma missions, Auto save (mission triggered) and user Save (ESC menu). Should one of them not be there?

Thanks for any help

Well, it works that way... If a mission fails and you click continue, your saves get busted. I am not sure if you can hit some abort and reload it just before continuing, it's been a long time since I played the campaign. Just think of it as a hardcore mode :) I think the system works that way because in some campaigns, the mission could very well fail and you would still continue in the campaign, just with a different outcome (the campaign did fork at several places depending on what you did, at least in Harvest Red). Or for a workaround, untill you click continue when it fails, you can maybe

alt-tab out of the game, and copy the savegame files to another directory, and later copy them back after you restarted the mission

.

Yeah, I'm really not a fan of these super long, poor guidance, no resource kind of missions. "Drive all over the map with no feedback, losing men and ammo and damaging your vehicle for hours" just isn't fun. Having two of them back to back even less so. :)

The dog mission was cool though, but I keep getting sniped!

Yup, just ran into that problem with multiple RPGs flying from behind trees. :( Get to do it all again...

Yeah, it was really lame. All i did was drive around the map at x4 speed, running over enemy infantry and vehicles while my gunner occasionally shot someone. If you actually had to gather some intelligence, talk to people, search bodies for clues etc it would all have been pretty immersive, now it was just boring. My team didnt leave the vehicle once. (Well, one of the engineers repaired the car at some point)

Seriously, no civilians at all? ALICE doesnt work on the new maps? Shame on you BI..

EDIT: Also, i think i cut down half of the Chernarussian forests with my vehicle. :p

This mission is a tortuous mess. Either you have to drive in circles looking for the invisible enemy that weren't in the main camp, or you get the convoy to the end target and nothing happens.

Yeah this mission was not fun at all. I think APC/Tank missions are a bad idea for SP anyway because the AI simply cannot be relied upon to drive or gun properly.

I agree that you shouldn't have to do the whole mission again if it fails. The saves should be available. Hope this will be fixed.

On another topic, the way some of you seem to play, you are destroying all the fun. No wonder the mission gets boring. Here's how I play these kinds of missions: First, I drive around, checking out the question marks that are marked on the map, constantly scanning and being alert for any enemies. Once I get assigned a location to check out, that's when the fun begins. First, I check out the map, carefully analyzing the terrain. I try to visualise how the terrain looks around the target, and choose a direction to approach from. Then I make a plan. How should I deploy my men? Where is a good position for the Machine Gunner and the rest of the support team? Where's a good place to put the vehicle so it can support the infantry, and/or engage any enemy vehicles that may get spotted? Where should the assault team go in, and so on. Then I do a close stealthy recon, usually just me and one AI soldier (they are good at detecting the enemy, so it's nice to have one AI guy around), trying to determine exactly where the enemy is, how many they are, and if there are any vehicles. This phase can get really tense, doing the recon without being detected. Then, I modify the plan as needed, according to the new information from the recon, and launch the attack. This is of course a very slow and meticulous process, so each "suspicious location" can take up to an hour to clear, especially if I have to change my plan and approach from a different direction than I thought at first.

Guys, this is a military simulator. It needs to be played with good, realistic tactics. It's not a shooter where you can just go in guns blazing. Well, you can if you keep abusing quick save, but where is the fun in that? If you are just rushing through missions like this, you are missing out on the good stuff. Read up on real life tactics, and try to apply that. The key is to take it slowly and carefully, recon the enemy positions before attacking, having tons of patience, and doing lots of thinking and planning before you act.

I'm stuck with the escort task, is there any way to complete this mission?

Except that in this case, you totally could and it was easier & more effective that actual tactics, hence the whining about crappy mission design. Asking us to do make believe tactics after we payed for it is retarded.
