Amd 7970: antialiasing unusable

Recommended Posts

I got myself a shiny 7970.

However I try to turn on antialiasing, something on the screen gets badly rendered.

No antialias = everything ok.

I tried from the game and from the catalyst control center.

No way.

Any hints? Is it a known bug?

catalyst control center, look up catalyst ai, set to very high quality

that fix it?

Seems a known bug with 7xxx cards & current drivers. Use FXAA via cfg file. Better performance with FXAA vs traditional AA.

Most recent beta patch, 1.61(?), somewhat corrects it.

I recently upgraded from 5870 to 7970 & noticed white grass with all AA settings, both inside ARMA & forcing through driver. I'm still running official 1.6 patched version. I just use FXAA.

that's because it's not antialiasing.

Open up the Arma2OA.cfg file (it's in your Documents\Arma2 folder) and look for the AToC setting. It should be set to 7 by default. Set it to zero.

Thank you all for the replies.

I'll try the cfg thing.

As for beta patches I'm unsure wether I can use them: my clan plays mostly on stable.

erupter: you'll find most of the above tips and more in this post:

Give these tweaks a try and let us know how you get on...

Thanks mate! That's a lot of things to try!

By the way when I change the texture detail, video memory changes accordingly by itself.

But everyone says to leave it at default: how can I do it, if it changes automatically?

I tried the AToC tweak, using all values. I run ARMA2OA in Eyefinity mode. Every time I changed AToC values to anything but 7, I got constant vertical lines on each side monitor. AToC value of 7 & ARMA2OA runs very sweet in Eyefinity.

So without AToC you get vertical lines? That's the weirdest thing I ever heard. AToC is just special anti-aliasing for grass, bushes and trees.

Can you tell me your computers specs, the resolution you run arma2 at and the framerate you get?

I'm dreaming of an eyefinity setup, but Arma2 looks like it would kill even a couple 7970 in crossfire!

@MaddogX

Yes, It was not what I was expecting. Definitely a driver issue there.

@ erupter

My pc specs:

Sandy Bridge 2600K @ 4800 MHz

16 G RAM @ 2100 with 8 G dedicated to FancyCache between 2 separate drive arrays

game run on RaptorX RAID 0 array

7970 running at 1200/1800 for ARMA2OA

Eyefinity resolution = 38xx X 800

CPU & vid card are water cooled

Note about Eyefinity monitors - center monitor is a 24" HP SIPS, the two side monitors are 20" Samsung BW's, TN screen. It's a poor man's approach but it works. ARMA's 12:3 pull down really helps a lot. The center monitor is 19x12 native, the sides are 1680 x 1050. I can run 5040 x 1050, but prefer the next lowest resolution for fps & a slightly larger target area.

My ARMA settings are about 3000 m view distance, more infantry type play than flying. Most settings are on very high. On benchmark 08, I get an average of 68-70 fps, the range from 50-109 fps. If I use v-synch, constant 60 fps.

I have made compromises in resolution & view distance because of one card. Not sure if I'll crossfire or SLI again. ARMA seems to run best on a single card.

Whenever I use my Asus vw222 (or something like that) at anything other than native resolution, the image looks awfull.

Besides I must really be CPU limited here, can't get that kind of framerates...

Erupter,

Is this the type of error your getting when playing?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VRbAM_QC2U&feature=plcp

Also, but not only that.

That I saw but somehow god rid of, can't remember how. Or at least I think I got rid of it, as I didn't saw it in the last mission I played.

Anyway that is still playable.

AA problem is much much worse, can't find a vid though.

My AA problem goes from some vegetation (bushes) appearing grey-white, to anything inside a 100m range disappearing into grey-white, player included.

And this depends on the AA setting.

I can't get the catastrophic glitching I saw the other day, but it's there nontheless.

1st picture, you can see the kind of diffused glitching I'm having (has been much worse, but today it seems limited to this kind of grey/white snow)

http://web.tiscali.it/erupter/img/glitch-01.jpg (398 kB)

2nd picture, can clearly see how much it changes without antialias: no glitching but much less vegetation around!

http://web.tiscali.it/erupter/img/glitch-02.jpg (465 kB)

3rd picture, a clear shot

http://web.tiscali.it/erupter/img/glitch-03.jpg (456 kB)

4th picture, the glitching again but this is going to be compared with the following picture

http://web.tiscali.it/erupter/img/glitch-04.jpg (366 kB)

5th picture, same exact spot as before, only with compass. can clearly see there is no vegetation around

I also had this happen without bringing anything on the screen while walking up a hill: a step below everything no vegetation, a step above lots of vegetation

For now I'll stick with no antialias.

Much less hassle.

erupter, I get the white grass thing when using AA other than FXAA. FXAA is a post processing effect that approximates AA & works with good effect with ARMA2OA with no performance loss.

The white grass thing is a driver thing and how the Dx11 7970 card handles Dx9 AA. I never saw this with my 5870 on drivers 12.2 beta. However, disabling ingame AA and adjusting FXAA via cfg file, ARMA2OA looks and runs the best I have played.

Some have stated that the beta 1.61 patch fixes this glitch. I have been lazy and not tried the beta patch, preferring to just run the official 1.6 version. Maybe I should try the beta patch. But I need to figure how the patch will impact the Combined Operations startup. I run the CO shortcut from the steam menu.

Mee too.

Since I'm also unable to use any launcher together with steam, I prefer to stick with official 1.60, lest I incur in some other headaches.

I'll give the FXAA a try.

Edit to an earlier post:

Erupter I stated that I was running EF @ 38xx X 800, not true, I'm running 5040 x 1050 @ the fps I listed. Better than I remembered.
