Hidden 0 Posted May 26, 2002 2 reboots later, I am mad at those who just must put tons of utterly useless things that moves in their sigs only to show the whole world how good they are at putting utterly useless things in their sigs. My PC never froze after the most recent OS reinstall, then I decided to check the OFP forum when I heard of the new patch, saw a thread with some guy whining over losing 50 posts (poor guy btw, how can he survive such a disaster), then WHAM! Audio CD kept playing of course, but Win2k was on ice, nothing that I did helped. Had to cut the power and reboot the hard way, I really hate that, and it is NOT good for any system. Then I got back, thought it had to be something special as I could not recall it ever happened earlier. Going back to the same thread, WHAM! My Win2k PC freezes again. Another reboot (and some very colorful language) and this time I turned off animation in MSIE 6.0. I have ADSL connection and like some of the animations on websites, but whatever sig it was (I do not go back there), the guy has no clue about Flash or whatever he uses in his or her sig. So can you please check your sigs before using them, please? Thanks for your attention. I do not mind text sigs or a small GIF or JPEG, but when you put Flash, Javascript and such in your sigs, something must go wrong eventually, especially if you do not know what you are doing. SKULLS_Viper 0 Posted May 26, 2002 Well i had problems when i had Windows Me, now that i upgraded to Windows XP home edition, i dont experiance any problems.Windows XP IS Windows 2000, and Win 2000 is very reliable, so they used that for XP, just made it more for home users. So i dont know why your computer is crashing when you have Win 2000. kegetys 2 Posted May 26, 2002 I agree that the sigs that people have on this forum are just horrible... I got around the problem by disabling the signatures from here, but when im not home and not logged in at this forum (so im a guest user) I have to watch all that ugliness... Could the moderators disable the signatures from the guest user? Im sure all the guests would like it that way
SKULLS_Viper 0 Posted May 26, 2002 Yea, i kinda agree.
Wobble 1 Posted May 26, 2002 what are you doing playing OFP on a machine that cant even display a few Gifs and Jpgs without being overloaded?
Jester983 0 Posted May 26, 2002 Were you running any other programs at the time? How long had it been since you rebooted your comp too. The Tempature. I mean all that could have been the cause, but a few GIFs and Jpegs that are animated froze your comp? All i can say is thats wierd.
Major Fubar 0 Posted May 26, 2002 Of course you can turn the view signatures option off in your account preferences. This seems a lot more realistic than people changing their signatures to suit you.
Epyon9283 0 Posted May 26, 2002 There must be something hella wrong with your computer if some animated gifs crash the thing.
FetishFool 0 Posted May 26, 2002 I like seeing unique sigatures. It gives the forums a more personal feel to it. I recently got into using signatures myself. The picture that's in my signature right now was made by me today because I like sigs so much. If the mod's disable signatures... I'm going to be very . Jamesia 0 Posted May 26, 2002 Do you think my sig and av will mess up his comp? I think we should all have animated sigs personally.

walker 0 Posted May 29, 2002 I have my browser set up to prevent Crash Animations and active X controls from running unless I aprove them. Mostly I dont aprove them Crash is band width hungry, bug riden pile of tottering choss that is best left to people of the dirty raincoat variety. Why we have a Crash button on this board amazes me. When I disabled animation in MSIE 6, the problem was gone, and I am only guessing a Flash movie file caused the problem, as Flash is still somewhat new on the internet, and it contains a script language too. As you know, scripts can easily lockup any computer. But I do not know anyway what it was. Now, 10mins ago, I read something in a thread and went to page 2, then a "OOOOAAHHHH" sound made me jump so high in the chair, I am sure my neighbours think I am watchin pornmovies! I guess it is supposed to sound like a soldier dying or something.. just a tad creepy, as I usually never have speakers on when surfing the net
Epyon9283 0 Posted May 30, 2002 flash is pretty old actually. Also, a script should not be able to lock up your computer. This message board is a huge perl script but I dont see it locking anyone's computer up. Same thing with asp, jsp, and php pages. I bet if you used a different browser, the problem would disappear. USSoldier11B 0 Posted May 31, 2002 I like all the sigs and avatars. They give the members personality. Mods have pretty decent rules about their size. Not nearly as bad a some forums. You guys just whine too much.
walker 0 Posted May 31, 2002 Acording to CERT the latest nasty is Macromedia (makers of crash) based. CERT Advisory CA-2002-14 Buffer overflow in Macromedia JRun A remote attacker can execute arbitrary code on the vulnerable target with SYSTEM privileges. This is on there top end server product to see how buggy their software is goto: http://www.macromedia.com/v1/developer/securityzone/ I personaly keep Crash turned off I don't see any reason to use it. I'm perfectly okay with pictures, but always having to hear that stupid sound is too much. If more people start doing it, this forum will be a mess of stupid sounds playing each time you read a post. The main reason I turned off sigs was because of it.....and I'm guessing I'm not the only one who thinks it's annoying. P.S. I'm pretty sure it's you, seeing as how every time I heard it you had replied on that page somewhere.
Guest Scooby Posted May 31, 2002 I have never liked of those pictures used after messages. These are about only forums I read and this is first time I came up to someone using some odd sounds with his posts... I know good old Finnish cure for people who do so... Take them behind the sauna to be shot.
Major Fubar 0 Posted June 1, 2002 Nope, don't have sound in my sig... Sorry Sherlock, back to your investigations  P.S. The settings are awfully simple to adjust:
Psycho1 0 Posted June 1, 2002 Like I said, I would have liked to leave it on except for whoever has that retarded sound playing in their sig. Â Your name was the only one I saw in all three threads where it played. EDIT: I was bored so I turned back sigs and went back to the threads where I knew it had played, and it's gone. I guess we'll never know who the culprit was, lol.
