PELHAM 10 Posted July 14, 2011 (edited) I considered joining up once but was put off by a course I went on that was designed to attract Infantry candidates. You had to spend a week (days only) with a locally based Regiment. I soon found I was the person that attracts the wrong sort of attention lol. During the trip to the orienteering course I taught everyone on the bus how to use a map and compass. This upset the regulars as they expected an afternoon of fun watching us all get lost. They even cheated by confiscating the maps but I had memorised the route so they were even less pleased when we completed the course ahead of schedule. On the laser shooting range (very impressive equipment!) I scored better than some of the regulars despite never having fired anything more than a bashed up air-rifle. Hill running. I had just come back from a 3 month trek in the Andes and saying I was in shape was a bit of an understatement. I came close to beating the record for the route and had to wait an hour because everyone else had got 'lost' in the woods to have a smoke break. By the last day they had had enough of me and decided to give me a good kicking during a game of football to see if I would lose my temper. "But I've just punched you in the face!" says one. "Don't worry about it." I said, "I'm sure you didn't mean it?". I'm glad that was the last day. All that was left for them was attempting to kill me! What I learned. -Never laugh at Sergeants no matter how ridiculous they are. -They probably wouldn't be able to teach me anything. -The real enemy would probably end up being the idiots you have to serve with. -If you have brains to start off with they will attempt to remove them so you comply with army standards. (It's possible the retards I met were not the best examples of the usually very professional Yorkshire Light Infantry) Edited July 14, 2011 by PELHAM

During the first paragraph i wanted to ask 'Must have done a lot of hiking huh?', turns out you did. Respect. ;) Anyway, ive considered becoming a combat engineer but decided not to. I have trouble being disciplined* and dont like having other people have power of what i have to do, especially when my life is at stake. That, and becoming a student allows me to drink much, much more beer. Ive also somewhat considered becoming the driver of a tank, however since Dutch tanks never get send anywhere i felt it was too useless. Now they are all being sold anyway so i am glad i didnt choose that a few years ago. :p *I understand everybody does, and i am not the 'boohoo teacher you suck!' type, ill see if i can explain it better without having drunk the aforementioned beer later. EDIT: Also, i would have had to cut my Metal hair, which isnt really an issue for me, but i doubt any of my friends would recognize me. :p Edited July 14, 2011 by NeMeSiS

hungrytoheal 10 Posted July 14, 2011 I don't wanna start up as a PVT (shitty pay) and I already chose Arty as my second option ;) You don't get the rank of private, you earn it. You will begin your career as a recruit undertaking basic training at Kapooka, NSW. If you're joining the military with pay and benefits coming first to mind and as your main focus, I really think you should reconsider. Clearly you haven't done a lot of research and your knowledge primarily sources from and extends to movies, games and what you've gathered through your time playing ArmA. Let me tell you, you are in for a real shock when the time comes for your application and you're doing your YOU session/assessment day. I haven't served in the ADF as of yet, but I've been researching and chatting to Australian soldiers for over three years. At the moment, I am an apprentice diesel mechanic (I also currently work with an ex-serving member of the Royal Australian Infantry, who has also done a period of service as a private military contractor) because I'd like to think I know the general reality of what being an infantry soldier involves in the Australian army. And for this reason, I chose a trade so I could get a bit more maturity and "wake up to the real world" through more life experience, and because I needed something to fall back on if infantry life didn't didn't work out for me or I was bored after the 4 years minimum required service time (yes you heard me - bored). However, as a 15 year old it's understandable that you wouldn't know any better and all I can say is that I STRONGLY recommend you do a LOT of research before you bother enlisting, otherwise you're just wasting your time. Or if DFR are silly enough to accept your application, you will not have a positive experience in the military. I would also like to add that general infantry/rifleman in the ADF is currently "full" in the sense that they are no longer offering enlistment in that role as such, however they are still looking for infantry officers. Just a thought.
DeclaredEvol 10 Posted July 14, 2011 (edited) I would try and go for CIA Operator, specialize in weaponry and explosives... and 100% efficient gear that mostly no regular marine or army guy could get their hands on. Though, getting too friendly with technology may end up killing me... enjoying a nice pay check for the rest of my life, and have a very good reason to get a degree in college would seem more reasonable than attending a shit hole out in the middle of the desert. Who else digs me? Edited July 14, 2011 by DeclaredEvol
solidsnake2384 10 Posted July 14, 2011 For privates in the Army the pay may seem bad but when you think about it oys actually oretty good. They pay for housing and food and clothes I think. But thats for the US Army i dont know about Australia.
ArmAriffic 10 Posted July 14, 2011 (edited) ... Yeah I do wanna join to enjoy it, but I also wan't alright pay. I have researched a fair but on the army website and know it will not be easy (and that the military can be full of shit at times with their promises). Also right now I'm lookin' at ether one of the officer job's in the army OR something navy wise (CSO, Maritime Warfare Officer, ect) but I still got a few moar school years to get past till' i'm there. hungrytoheal 10 Posted July 14, 2011 Full of shit with their promises? Well what I can say to that is their website and commercials can be a little misleading and you will gain absolutely no proper knowledge of what to expect when you do join. When you look at different salaries on DefenceJobs, you should know that if you are offered deployment opportunities (for example, you are sent to over to Afghanistan for a few months - although deployment to Afghanistan is very unlikely for you post-2014) your pay is dramatically increased. There is also other allowances, government pensions/funding etc. that are not really highlighted on the website and such.
sudayev 27 Posted July 15, 2011 As a kid I always dreamed of being an Anti-Air specialist protecting the skies with ground based missiles :) But now it might be a military job that corresponds with my studies in psychology. Something with the intel maybe. BTW This job within USAF Weather Agency always fascinated me: Air Force Special Operations Weather Technician

ProfTournesol 956 Posted July 15, 2011 I was dressed in blue during my military service, when i served as Navy scientific officer. That's was fun, i spent some times on an aircraft carrier ("Le Foch" before his retirement), where i saw some Rafale tests which were very impressive. The Navy would be a good choice, but i'm too old now

paplate 10 Posted July 15, 2011 I originally wanted to enlist in the Marines as an infantryman, but now have reconsidered and plan on going to a college with a Naval ROTC (with Marine option) and become an Infantry Officer. My parents are excited for the college I'm looking at, but aren't as eager of my decision to go in the Marines, and going in as an Infantry Officer. I guess that's to be expected though. Thumbtoes72 10 Posted July 16, 2011 I am thinking about joining the Australian Army as an Infantry Officer, i'm 15 atm so I have to wait 2 years though You can join the Australian army at 17 as an officer? I feel like I need to call bullshit on that one. That would be insane if they allowed a 17 year old kid to lead people. If I could do it again I would probably have gone the route of ranger (which I still can if I want to try for it) or gone navy and went SWCC, I don't think I could have passed the training back when I first joined but I'm very confident I could now. Innomadic 10 Posted July 16, 2011 Air Force, pathfinding my way there now. If i'm knocked back this year will do a uni course in aviation and then try again (know someone who succeeded that way) You can join the Australian army at 17 as an officer? I feel like I need to call bullshit on that one. That would be insane if they allowed a 17 year old kid to lead people. Training at ADFA (which i assume he wants to do) will take a fair while to complete i believe, and i think the minimum requirements are passes in Yr10/11. General rule of thumb, Officers are required to go to ADFA/UNSW (Australian Defence Force Academy and University of New South Wales for those not in the know), direct entry can see you end up as an Officer but generally direct entry is your general infantry/support teams. Anyone who knows better feel free to correct, this is based on a hazy memory.
Innomadic 10 Posted July 16, 2011 Innomadic - RAAF, lol. :D Don't understand your comment so i've interpreted it in three different ways 1. Its not Air Force, its RAAF 2. LOL @ future equipment (F-35 may you burn in hell) 3. LOL its not Army (implying Army is the only branch anyone should ever go into)

Thumbtoes72 10 Posted July 19, 2011 Welcome to the dark side, I mean, BIS forums. You can start studying at ADFA at 17, not sure about age requirements re: direct entry as into RMC, but you will be at RMC for a minimum of 18 months in each case (the only difference is that post-ADFA, you will have a degree to boot, and the authority to call all direct entry people bakers). Each route you go down does not throw you into the officer role straight away; you and your classmates need to learn how to function as riflemen first of all. You will not be leading actual troops for a good stretch of time during your training period - you will be leading your classmates. Obviously you only get your command after leaving RMC and returning to the ARA. GSOs feel free to help an SSO out here. Innomadic - RAAF, lol. :D With a lot of our officers they go to college for 4 years, meanwhile they go though an officer program, then, following graduation the become a second lieutenant and lead a platoon they are usually 22 or 23 years old. When I was 22 I had a combat deployment under my belt and 4 years actual experience. I can only assume an aussie will become an officer even younger than that, and no matter what an LT under 25 scares the shit out of me.
