Standing Orders

My squad is divided into Team Red, Team Blue and Team White.

I want the teams to move forward, only a short distance, one team at a time and take up a firing position before the next team moves forward.

To do this takes lots of keystrokes!

I suggest that a player, record a whole series of keystrokes so that the player can order the above with just one keystroke.

Further, I suggest that a player record a whole series of Standing Orders as he sees fit. Each Standing Order is selected with just one keystroke.

Agreed. This is a good idea. Also allow this for individual soldiers, and allow the player to pre-determine "tactics" for their units that they can add quickly and easily in any mission (e.g. through the "custom" screen or similar). So, for instance, I can create a "tactic" for my AA troops that says "do not target vehicles, do not target planes, only target helicopters", or "do not fire unless squad leader gives the Fire order" and so on. This would be good.

IIRC this was built into the AI somehow in the early ARMA2 days, where for example if you had a fireteam consisting of 4-5 men (the 5th being you), the AI would move and work in pairs, covering eachother in the way you suggested.

I can't remember what happened to that though, the recently AI's pairwork seems to have deteriorated as far as I can tell :j: but your feature request is definitely plausible!

Would be good to have waypoint functionality for the group leader, for the immediate area. So you can quickly lay down multiple waypoints, and even synchronise them ala H&D2. Which had the best standing order system so far in a game IMO.

I'd personally like to see Leapfrogging, and other formations implemented into A3. and for the Ai to actually follow them properly xD

Oh haha my bad, I just had this image in my head of two groups of two covering eachother, dunno why :p

A hit-n-run style retreat tactic for the AI would also be sweet, like 'contact spotted'; one team provides covering fire while the other retreats a bit then they switch etc. eventually taking a detour around their enemies' flank to get to where they were originally heading for again; this could be achieved with the keystroke too :)

For me its the age old problem of the current team command interface, the old number menu is good to give complex commands when you are not in a hurry but hard to use when shit hits the fans, the new "context senstive" menu fail the do the job of speeding up because of the menu location not being at an ideal location, the "context senstive" stuff are (most of the time) not always the things we want to have, and it block instant access to old menu which we old player find annoying.

"Context sensitive" often means that the action menu changes if something drifts across your view or you look in a different direction. I hate chasing those actions up & down the menu when I'm in a hurry :)

What would be nice, considering the futuristic setting, would be an item you can carry, something like a small laptop, that would give you a satellite view of your area, with allies and known enemy positions pointed out. You can then give your allies paths to follow simply by dragging the mouse. Those allies would then follow that path, in a certain level of engagement, so they don't shoot guys 1KM away or something.

You already have that if you play Arma 2 on a low difficulty level.
