More news to come at E3 2011

Recommended Posts

I remember ages ago, I think it was Suma that said it's an entirely new engine but it will use some techniques from RV.

ArmA 3 is an updated RV engine.

It makes me wonder why they are different engines, they're both similar types of games in terms of game mechanics and what the engine needs to do.

Maybe the engines share large amounts of code, but do certain things like terrain rendering differently.

It will be interesting to see how this works.

CC is a multiplatform game.

RV is built around PC architecture where the limit is pushed further every year. RV went way too far from anything 6 years old console hardware can handle. So redoing RV for this would be really pointless in any case.

However CC does use Linda

What disappoints me however is that there seem to be only 3 vehicles

That's a good point. Scaling for consoles is possible but maybe not worth the effort for this game. They would need to use a DX9 renderer, reduce the detail of everything, reduce the complexity of missions, viewdistance ect.

In fact if you look at Carrier Command, it looks a lot easier to scale to consoles. The viewdistance is nowhere near ArmA 3, the map is less complex (no cities or anything too complex shown in previews).

However CC does use Linda

Linda is a tool for modelling vegetation, not an engine. It can be used to create models for any engine, even CGI renders and movies...

Ahhh must the console kiddies try to suck ambition (not that this game lacks it of course) out of everything they touch? Hopefully when the community modders get their hands on this game they can really push it to see how far it can go on a PC! Pehaps even adding cities and ArmA like draw distances?

"Must the PC nerds whine about everything they see?". We cam all do it, please dont drag this down with this childish nonsense.

And where would the childish nonsense be? Complaining about consoles? In that case I'm a child as well. Big time.

It's not a coincidence if console games are usually defined as "dumbed down"

Complaining about consoles: "I find the lack of depth in many games now an issue."

Childish nonsense: "Stoopid console kiddies, your opinion us invalid go back to HALO. Im so mature and expect mature games for mature gamers like myself.

The second part is so often how muture adult "PC only" gamers come across.

And it is certainly true that consoles hold back games. Sorry if it sounded childish, but whining makes the world go round...maybe.

No problems, happy days.

Anyway this is looking great. Im wondering how many units we can control at once. I know the original you could only have a few, by the looks of it BIS is staying along those lines.

In my opinion we didn't see enough to confirm that. It could very well be that you only have a handful of each type of unit to work with, but there could be more of them too.

Remember that the original was limited in what you could do and what you could have, or they would've put in more stuff and options for you.

BI want to expand on the general feel of the original while still giving players of today an even more diverse and beautiful game in CC:GM, as such I think we are more likely to have more of each type of unit and we know now that there will be much, much more control options than the original. This is confirmed through them telling/showing of the combat behavior setting for units not directly controlled by the player and the multi-unit battle seen from the view of a Manta strafing the enemy.

I took a look at the strategic map shown and while you could designate a destination as in the previous game, it didn't show that you could designate waypoints for units to follow or even if you could give tasks to your units at these points, like engaging any enemy ground/air units or defenses within an area of x miles, scout the area, escort friendly units and/or structures in the area or attack a specific structure then return to carrier.

Any or all of these ideas (or any other I didn't think of) would be totally awesome if they are implemented.:yay:

And I do hope you can still land Mantas on the islands like in the original and refuel them for long range missions, perhaps even repair them.

On a different note, if I'm not mistaken we've got a brand new unit type to boot! It looks like a heli-drone or something, interesting addition.

Original had four active and another four in stock. Looks like BIS wants to keep to it - four launch pads on carrier :)
