Dropship

Posted this at the OFPEC but was unaware of their sci/fi policy so ...

Well for the most part for those that know me, I have been working on implementation of adding real world terrain into OFP. I am not the "artist" or "modeler" but I do what I can about stuff I know and enjoy.

One of my other games besides OFP that I enjoy are those based on Aliens vs. Predator. With the recent release of AVP2 and the tool kit that you can download for it I was able to import the dropship into milkshape and animate it.

The landing gear, weapon pods and ramp are fully able to be animated in milkshape. I also believe the "gatling" gun can be made to swivel on the front. I think OFP bombs could replace those allready loaded on the bird. Possibly "headlights" could be added onto the front to port and starboard sides, OFP rockets fired out of the rear pods, model shows a pilot and copilot area, could use the rear possible for troop transport, sounds could be used from the game ... etc... etc... etc.... I don't know a thing about oxygen or its limitations on how these things would be affected and I have to admit again that this probably would be a job for one much more talented in this area than I. Hopefully someone can run with this. I think it would make an excellent addon. Could even make other mods such as the apc, Colonial Marine weapons etc ...

The UD4L Dropship is a versatile dropship and tactical transport. It was derived from an original Department of Defense requirement formulated at the end of the Tienstin conflict. It acts as a gunship by using its own internal gun and deploying weapon pods and hardpoints for rockets and missiles. The principle airframe is constructed from superplastic-formed diffusion-bonded metal matrix composites (MMC) and its 103.6 cubic meter internal payload bay can easily fit a M577 A.P.C. (turret stowed). The engines can produce exceptionally high thrust for low specific fuel consumption. The UD4L Dropship is also called a "Cheyenne." It has AN/ALQ-2004E defensive systems to keep it well protected. It has two types of power plants to allow vertical take-off capability (VTOL) hover to the hypersonic trans-atmospheric.

Mate please tell me the wings fold out and in or what ever they are ment to do (I was so excited that i really did not want to read anything). But I always wanted to fly one of them they look so cool. Keep it up mate.

I am most often for 100% realism but I like so much of aliens theme that I wouldnt mind seeing that dropship, other vehicles and marines in game for some futuristic battles for humans vs. humans.

Though leave aliens out of it smile.gif

I agree. If you want an aliens vs. humans, have some vehicles, mostly ground, and it would be mostly infantry game. You could have the APC, a hummvee-like vehicle with a turret, and the list goes on and on and on...

well i'm a big fan of the colonial marines but i never liked the idea of playing as aliens much.

i think it would be a better match up to send it up against preditors at least the might have some vehicles.

or even send them up against another race from another series. i.e (against the marines from starship troopers or something to that effect)

The Colonial Marines vs. renegade terraformers/independence fighters...

The Aliens RPG had some great ideas for Colonial Marine campaigns...

Or draw inspiration from movies like Soldier, or Outland... smile.gif

There is only one of the aliens books i jsut couldnt get into for some reason. Is called Aliens: Music of the Spears. Anyone read it? Impressions?

Okay i know someone will only end up importing the APC from AvP2 info OFP or something, but once again ill pimp my APC a bit. Would fit in nicely with the dropship smile.gif

Was quite hard getting it right, because i couldnt manage to find any blueprints anywhere, but with books, comics videos and ... toys *cough* I managed to get it looking pretty accurate. 2300 polys, not sooo bad but im sure I could make it less.

Can't do a thing with em. But I'm sure somebody with oxygen will in the future. When? I have no idea. If nobody does it then I'll juust do it myself once it goes "public."

As far as the apc in the dropship - I figure if you can animate landing gear in OFP then you can also animate the ramp, there is allreay a space in the model to fit the apc. Just drive it up and close the ramp to hold it in. Just a theory though until somebody can test it.

well i dont think the game would support the aliens or the predators well, so someone will have to get creative and design some vehicles for some human oppponents, the technical manual seems to imply the chinese or maybe the british as future opponents.

the APC would be cool, but youd have to do the configs to give it poor cross country performance... i wouldnt want to take it across rough terrain.. with only 2 wheels and no ground clearance.... biggrin.gif

Maybe the bad guys could be the Chiggers from Space: Above and Beyond (An excellent near future military TV series). I think they would make cool adversaries, and they are very humanoid. It wouldn't be very hard to model them and their weapons. Just a thought.

But I agree human opponents would probably be the best for the Colonial Marines in the OFP engine.
