I have played ARMA series for 10 years

Recommended Posts

And still have not touched on every aspect of this great sim.

I played ARMA back when it was OFP and tbh I was all ways a sniper.

I may have dabbled with the planes and tanks but I have never really chose that as my main roll.

So what I mean is I am all ways a sniper (Troop) there for if I was to play as a pilot or Armour infantry then it would be a complete different game to me.

So yeah ARMA is 3 sims in one I have never seen any other game do this really.

So how many of you have really touched the surface if this with my example above?.

I love to play as Pilot, Tank Crewman, Infantry. Its intersting that you have to use different Tactics for each role

Yep exactly it requires all a different approach its amazing.

I have played since OFP but thought I wonder how many others play just as one roll eg Sniper,Pilot etc and how many hours have been clocked up as just one roll.

EDIT

Actually OFP was released more than 10 years ago so in fact I have been playing this series for longer :O.

That`s a huge feat when ya consider every game I have ever purchased has only kept me interested for no more then a month or so hahahaha.

Same for me. Well I mainly played as an infrantry man, but only becuase most missions only do support that role. The Community has a serious lack of good Tank and Aircraft Missions

Thats because the game ishorrivble at representing anything besides Infanrty.

ArmA has the strange tendency to dumb down a weapon system to arcade level the more powerfull it is. While you struggle to make it in the ground and have a hard time they play airquake up in the sky...the so called "tabbing" game. Tank combat is also a bit of a bad Joke if youre not playing the US faction.

Beagle - Yes your right . I often fall into that trap saying ' yeah im infantry though and through' , only deep down to think 'because I have to be'.

The problem is the level of detail. The engine doesnt work to well at high speed ( aircraft speed ) and tank battles are dumbed down by the lack of a penetration model (compared to the current 'hit' based one).

Take a look at the astonishing A10 Warthog game - that level of fidelity would bee quite something with a ARMA2 esque infantry game.

The other issue is AI, tank battles would be better IF pathfinding was improved. Ultimately though, being a rifleman is soldiering at its purest, reliant on your gun and wits rather than tonnes of hardware.

I wouldn't say that the game is "horrible" at representing vehicular combat. I think the focus is to have the best representation of tanks/airplanes as possible from the infantryman's perspective. From the crewman's perspective, sure, it may not be at the dedicated "Steel Beasts" level of fidelity, but from the outside, it looks and acts like it.

Really, I'm glad that the vehicles are not at full simulation quality. I don't want to be forced to use a joystick to fly, or have to memorize any more keys than I have to. The truly important thing, IMO, is ballistics, which is very well done in this game.

Hi all

I am a bit old and doddery so I tend to do less CQB, I no longer have the reaction times of youth. So I play a more tactical role eg Over-watch and command. I also do Scouting which surprisingly needs people who think rather than react. I always think the only weapon a scout should have is a knife, or in vanilla ArmA a silenced pistol.

In Valhalla I often spend the mission doing a support role like spamming the objective with smoke rounds from an M32 as the others assault. So I get near zero kills. I am also quite good at finding sneaky beaky routes into an objective and capturing zones, that is down to those scouting skills and I have built up a few methods to hold a zone while other more capable CQB players spawn in. I wish more of the personal points in Valhalla were awarded for capturing zones rather than killing enemy.

I do like hunting snipers though :D

But like everyone here it is he sheer breadth of the things you can do in an open world simulation like ArmA that makes it so fun. I leave corridors and shoe-boxes to the twitchers.

Kind Regards walker

I would love to see more realism for the Armour and air that would be great as this is a sim.

Heheh like Walker, im also a bit older than the average -- but I use my brains too.

I put either a couple AI, or someone younger than me on point, about 100m in front of the main formation and spend my brainpower trying not to run him out of cover.

I figure wtih 100m dipstick, I can check the oil pretty well without gettin any on me, and pour it in if needed.

I appreciate the subtleties of good scouting, and wish the AI could be as adept and smart at it as a human scout.

Its just another illustration that this SIM is akin to real life soldiering itself, in that there are many many facets to doing it right, and any one facet is a skill learned over months and years. The deeper your appreciation of a well-planned and executed op, the longer this SIM will satisfy you, in that you feel like you will never learn enough.

I love being a grunt (in the real world I was in the Air Force). I love commanding a squad and keeping them, and myself alive and laying some harm to the enemy at the same time. There is so much to know, just in that simple task that I havent lost interest, and it hasnt gotten boring.

Take care, and happy hunting !

Yep I some times play a round for like 3 hours and never get a kill.

Not because I miss but because being a sniper all so entails being a scout, spotter.

I spent hours once just laying on a hill watching enemy movement and reporting it back to my team.

Needless to say we won and WOW what a difference it made giving my team advacne warning of all enemy movement.

Well, the vehicels might not be as realistic as they should be (well playing with ACE, at least the Tanks are more realistic) but you can still use and explore RL Tactics with them. This can get pretty intersting.

:) another ACE player I see.

ACE really does fill that gap and I love what they have done very impressive.

All we need now is even more realism with the tanks and planes.

If we could get the planes to Falcon 4.0 spec and the tanks to any other equivalent tank sim we would be laughing :).

It would be nice to have plug-in realism for tanks & helis though, some sort of linking technology for DCS/Steel beasts :)

I would be up for that.

Just imagine the simulation side of Falcon 4.0 etc in ARMA planes :O.

It get's pretty abhorrent as soon as you try these RL tactics in a online environment and meet the overpowered long lange AT missiles and rocket spam a single Player can lay upon you in a few seconds..o. or just become a victim of tabbing while you're applying tactics that would save you from harrasment by air vehicles RL but the unforgiving all seeing eye is tabbing you out of action.

No way this can be of any fun.

Beagle, Ace takes care of that, If you play good, you´ll have the AT gunner in your sights as soon as he fires his first rocket (especially with FLIR), just because of the smoke the launch produces. Once you can see him, he is dead already. Besides from that, you have a good chance of surviving this first rocket he might fire because of the ACE armour system. Also the AT gunner has to choose his firing position very carefully if he doesn´t want to be toasted by the backblast. ...Well to make this short, Beagle try out ACE.
