Does increasing speed of a bullet, missile or rocket affect its damage at all ?

At least for bullets, damage is dependant on projectile speed, yes (amongst other parameters)

A bullet is the same as any other projectile. Think of a cannon on an old warship in a battle. If you were to lightly touch the enemy ship with the cannonball it would just make a dent in the boat, maybe screw up some of the wood siding. But you take that same situation and give it a boost, suddenly it's ripping the enemy ship apart like paper. Velocity = power.

Are you talking about real life or in Arma2?

In real life, a bullet's damage is caused by both its speed and its fracturing and tumbling end over end - which bullets such as 5.56mm are designed to do in flesh after a flying a few hundred metres. A tumbling/fractured bullet does a lot more damage to the target because it doesn't go cleanly through. If the bullet speed is increased it could conceivably tumble on impact differently. I'm not sure Arma models this behaviour, so bullet damage probably scales pretty well with velocity.

Edit: I'm not a ballistics expert...

No, its not in the wrong section. If i were referring to real life concept i would'v posted under General section.

So this is an addon. Were are wip shots? Were is code example? This looks nothing like an addon or mod in the works.

Your first post gives no indication of what you are planing on doing. It is just a question.

Give the man a chance, lads. If meassures need to be taken I am sure the moderators are men enough to handle matters themselves. You're all being quite rude.

Mr. Acid sounds like he will be trying to delve into the dark corners of config editing. A scary and disturbing area of armadom, to be sure. Might I suggest that you take a look at the work of others? It is the best way to learn in my opinion. Mr. Kju's PROPER mod should have something worthwhile, maybe ACE2 as well.

However, as the boys mentioned, I'd go to the appropriate editing part of this forum to ask questions, should any arise. Oterwise you might arouse the ire of the old forum hags.

It's in the wrong section as this section is about discussing upcoming addons and mods, and you don't seem to be talking about anything incoming :)

There's a whole section dedicated to editing and modding where your question would be more suited.

Anyway my answer was about in-game : in game, damage is dependant on bullet speed

If its in the wrong section then why hasnt it been moved yet...

Technically i am currently working on improving this by modding for my self. Just because i may not release it to the public dosent mean i cant come here and ask how something is done.

When im lying prone on the ground and the enemy is walking diagonal to my direction, i center my cross-hair on his back and fire off a shot using a 7mm rifle at a distance of 200 to 300 yards and miss hitting the ground next him, to me, something needs to be fixed here. Thats why i was asking.

My apology if it is in the wrong section. I didnt know were else to ask.

This might be a better place : http://forums.bistudio.com/forumdisplay.php?f=95 for everything related on how to modify games mecanisms and statistics through addons or mods

I guess mods will move the thread appropriately, anyway

back to your question : Not sure I understand the relation between missing the guy and the amount of damage (not) done....

If you fire on the guy while is is on the move laterally, you're probably going to miss because of bullet travel time. You need to aim before him

Well, what i meant to say was i wanted to try increasing the speed of the bullet (atleast for scoped rifles) to achieve this effect without over doing it on damage. I wasnt sure if it would effect the damage potential of the weapon.

Thanks for the link.

Aye, got it. Yes, it will impact.

There's a base damage per bullet defined in config files that you can reduce to achieve the same damage at greater speed.

About a year or so back we had a debate on Arma2's rifle ballistics on this forum, and after some research into the issue by several forum members it was learned that at least trajectory and time of flight-wise the ballistics are pretty close to real life even in the stock game. There shouldn't be much difference when the range is only a few hundred meters. Use something like ACE and you'll get an even better result. Iirc this thread was in the "General" section of the forums.

If you consistently shoot short at a distance as short as 300 yards you need to look at your shooting, choice of weapon and choice of ammo, not the ballistics.

edit: Here's the thread I'm talking about http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=93262&page=8
