Recommended Posts

Well its all fun and Games where I live. Yesterday The loca lcouncil builders who are renevating our little pond next to us dug up a live WW 2 grenade. They cordened off the whole area covering 175 meteres. The army bomb disposal were called to destroy it via controlled explosion. I managed to get the whole incident on film with my camera. Some may notice a previous video in the same location where soom loony tried to jump off the multi story. Another video i captured lol

Yup, scary stuff. At least it was a hand grenade and not an... Artillery shell. :p

I've only ever heard/felt/seen one explosion in my life, and that was the only suicide bomber in Qatar's history. Unfortunately the only casualty other than him died not because of the explosion but because of a heart attack from the shock. :(

I think if it was a shell we would all have been evacuated simply because ofthe size and the chances are we would all need new windows

As a boy (many years ago) I found a live 303 sized cartridge in a garden one day and spent all afternoon playing with it, including repeatedly throwing it at my cousin in the street, who threw is back at me. My parents spoiled our fun by taking it to the police station. The desk sargeant's face was a picture.

Never did find out how it got into a suburban garden or heard any more about it.

Here in Germany there are still quite often evacuations taking place because of WW2 ordnance. But the bigger stuff is usually disarmed and rarely brought to an explosion. Especially in urban areas this can cause some serious chaos because of all roads and rails stopped and the like. But still better than having it explode by chance or an ill-directed lightning...

But you know, you could live in Flanders: Messines 22tons bomb

Just this June a WWII 500 lbs bomd exploded in the city of Göttingen killing three specialist during defusing. This happens at least twice a year here in Germany. http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/gesellschaft/0,1518,698178,00.html Edited by Beagle

thats the problem with world war 2. soo many bombs were dropped all over europe including germany france and england, that soo many of the 'duds' were just forgotten about and buried. then housing estates were built over them years later. its the same with mine fields. unless you know exactly how many were layed and where, they are pretty much labelled as dangerous zones forever. I know for a fact there are still some active fenced off mine fields over in the falklands from 1980 simply because they cant guarantee its safe

When walking around Vimmy Ridge and and the Newfoundland Memorial Park this summer, there were many areas cordoned off due to "unexploded munitions". It's quite surreal to know that if you step that way you could get yourself blown apart by munition from a war that was 70 years ago. :butbut:

This happens in Hong Kong as well, bomb and explodsives from both British and Emporio Japan were often found under earth or in the Victoria harbor area.
