Yeah, Leonardo is Leonardo and hard to compare to anybody else. He was so much more then a painter.... Unfortunately you see his works so often everywhere so at least I grow a bit tired of them.

I thought you'd recognise the Fat Chick by now, Denoir wink.gif

If not, see the gunporn-thread + the topleft corner of the first posted Bosch picture + the member-titles thread, where her true identity is revealed while Hilandor is blown by a dolphin smile.gif

The one with the two fat chicks eating feeding eachother?

That's pretty horrible I know, but sometimes reality is the best teacher.

Or was it the more recent one - of the monkey babe?

No it was one of the early ones, I think it was only one chick, but I am trying to suppress that memory.

And *no*! Don't post anything of that here in this thread: I'll find you and hunt you down tounge.gif

intellectually stimulating questions, but overall not a very good painting

Oh... didnt Brugel do "The Seven Deadly Sins" series of paintings? I had to do a report on them back in the 4th grade... it was madness...

and if I'm not mistaken, and I never have been, then gluttony is a sin. The painting styles of the two artists are similar, which would... EXPLAIN THE FAT CHICK! BOOYAH!

This you'll have to clarify. Composition, technique, presentation?

I have a painting from that same artist!!

It's hanging in my room beside my computer.

It's the same concept, same color scheme, and everything.

In mine, it's a painted collage of people doing bad things to eachother.

In yours, it looks like a collage of people having fetish's.

That artist is amazing.

Honestly, I can't even get a good look at the picture to tell.

Art is not meant to be viewed through a computer monitor if you ask me.

It doesn't have the same effect as if viewed in real life.

The color scheme isnt very compelling, Im reminded more of Arizona than Armageddon (no offense to any of you people out in Arizona tounge.gif )

The little black demons just arent all that scary, and neither are the scenes of human suffering. They dont show any independent interpretation by the artist, in fact, aside from the somewhat avant garde landscape, this is just a rote re examination of the standard hellfire and brimstone paintings that are so common in Western art history. Did I mention the artist wouldnt have recognized the human form if it bit him in the ass. Apparently noone told him that the Classical Era ended a few hundred years ago.

Sorry, I just turned into an art snob there for a second biggrin.gif

Tex:

This was painted by Hieronymus Bosch (1450 - 1516), and he was the first to paint such things. If you have seen something similar then it is an imitation of his style.

It is very avantgarde, as you noticed, yet it is painted during the renaissance era. You are definetly wrong when you say that it lacks personal interpretation from the painter (perhaps the picture is too small to see it correctly). All the characters in it are very personalized and all have their symbolic religious meaning. Here is a detail from the picture:

Gotcha. I cant see any of that stuff in the other picture. I figured someone would step in and tell me that this was an older painting smile.gif , its just that in my experience on gaming forums, you dont often have discussions on Renaissance art; so I figured it was a newer painting.

I cant say my opinion has changed too much, although some of that might be that it isnt a very likeable picture (of course it isnt meant to be). I just dont find his ideas of Apocalyptic evil to be particularly original or fresh, even for the time period. The painting exudes very standard European Middle Ages standards of vile/wicked objects, things and events. The ugly old witch, who while not participating in the demons work, is cooling up some devilry of her own. The lynching, the quintessential example of passion overrunning reason, resulting in the loss of a life. The rather casual way human remains are dealt with, basically being piled up in a corner for all intents and purposes. And, of course, images of demons tormenting sinners by forcing sins -that they previously found so enjoyable- literally down their throat.

Dark? sure. Particularly awe-inspiring? no.

The Tower of Babel. (too large to hotlink)<span id='postcolor'>

To be honest, I don't think those paintings are impressive at all... I'm not trying to act like an idiot and i don't know a lot about art but when i went to Antwerp (Belgium, Europe) a couple weeks ago with my school i saw some paintings that were a lot more impressive. I can't remember who painted them...

One of them was about jezus being nailed on the cross, the other one i can't remember. The paintings allways had a special patern (no idea how you write this word biggrin.gif ).

I don't like art but those paintings were really nice!

You're talking about Van Eyck maybe?

I myself went to Belgium only a few weeks ago and saw the Van Eyck exhibition but that was in Bruges

we could have met smile.gif

As for Bosch i like him most of the time and im surprised more people didnt recognise his distictive style, i thought he was quite a famous artist

'Tex' you make some interesting points but much of what you regard as the 'standard' Middle age hellfire and brimstone depictions come from Heironimous (splling?) Bosch

It could be said that he was an early precursor to surrealism, It may be noted that there are a wealth of phallic objects in his work (not to mention actual depictions of sex)

and certainly all of the people with the giant 'knives' in their hands are highly suggestive.( with numerous objects being 'penetrated' by said 'knives'-)

Then there is the woman in left hand corner, almost certainly a reference to the artists mother and his latent incestuous desires wink.gif
