Can I set waypoints for myself?!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Very basic and probably dumb question but is there any way I can set waypoints for myself?!

I can tell my friend what to do and where to go so it appears on his radar but is there anyway I can set myself way points or 'move to' locations? i

I'm not in the 'high command' mode and only controlling a few men in a map I've made but can't work out how to set them waypoints of myself waypoints. Help appreciated!

Thanks

Actually I reckon there are a lot of new people ( maybe even some vets) who don't know about this function. It is very useful for a number of reasons and can help with some things like TKs etc.

I mainly play Domination, but these can apply to other missions too:

1. Obvious use is a way point for you to get your bearings.

2. If you are about to para drop near a hostile town/objective you can set this marker to give your self some thing to aim for when HALOing

3. You can use is as a marker so you know exactly where friendlies are. For example: I am engaging a town from a distance with a Bradley using very lethal HE rounds. I also have FLIR on so its hard to tell friend from foe. I open the map every so often and put the marker at the furthest point that friendlies have advanced therefore I know anything beyond that is hostile. I keep opening the map and moving the marker as required.

This can also be used when you are sniping or using any other type of stand off weapon. Its handy for plotting attack runs in jets too.

4. Using it as a marker to line up for landing on a runway.

Two major problems with it though....

1. It's freaking Green of all colours - you loose it all the time when near foliage (which is...uhhh every where)

2. It fades some times so you can barely see it. Compounded when combined with the above problem.

BIS Please make it RED and not FADE

The same can be said for the virtual gun sight. Make it not fade and a colour we can see in all situations. Better yet :- give us the option to change it to what ever colour we want.

Lol...yeah I didn't know about that either. Please tell me it hasn't been in the games for the last 9 years!!

play in recruit mode you noob so marks dont fade

Although hes being a bit of an arse in the way of his suggestion. He has a point. It can be a bit of a pain the arse getting your bearings, especially if your player unit has no gps. Try editing the difficulty (Options - Game Options - Difficulty - and edit the chosen level, (recruit, regular, veteran, expert), that way you can have the game on recruit or regular, and still up the enemy skill, or play on regular and have Extended HUD info enabled for example, (some settings are locked out at regular and above). You will get used to learning how to spot you postion from comparing the map and your surroundings if no gps is availible.

I'm all for playing it on expert. I only played Operation Flashpoint DR on Xbox on the top difficulty as I hate having hud and things that are unrealistic.

However, I know for a fact (my dad is a pilot), that if you were flying an A-10 for example you would have way points marked on your HUD. I don't want waypoints for the ground units, I want to be able to fly my plane as if it were real without having to level out and press 'M' to check the map. If I was going on a mission in a plane I'd plan out my waypoints and route before take off and use them to follow.

In the mission I'm making we start in a building near the airfield. We plan our mission (Need to work out waypoints for my friend and me.) We get in a car and drive to the hangars and get in A-10's. We taxi to the runway, take off, and then fly a mission scouting where the enemy are. I need the way points to fly over the different towns. We're then going land again and take off with a squad in CH-47's and take out what we've found.

I am new to PC gaming, I've always felt let down and hemmed in by consoles and I cannot believe how AMAZING Arma 2 is! I've only managed to get it because I've bought a brand new MacBook Pro but I'm running Windows on it.

Yeah, see I have no problem with full difficulty. I just hate pseudo difficulty, either have the markers on and visible all the time or have them off, not in between, its just frustrating I find. The same with the colour of the virtual gunsight:- its like "you can have a virtual gun sight but we have to make it green and difficult to see so it's "realistic" ". If I wanted it realistic Ill turn it off. Just make it a distinguishable colour and not fade. That's how it was in Flashpoint and no one complained. I find BIS have a habit of "upgrading"/ enhancing things that don't need changing just for the sake of it sometimes. They need to jump online and play some games. That would be worth 1000 bug reports as the flaws in the interface and basic game play mechanics that can make Arma2 feel frustrating would stand out like a flashing neon light to them.

I play pretty much exclusively online also so I have to play at the difficulty level dictated by the server. And I'm pretty sure most of them wouldn't care if markers where solid and non fading all the time,or a distinguishable colour. If they want it to be harder they would just disable it.

----------------------------------

Did a bit of testing and difficulty level has nothing to do with whether makers fade or not, it only affects if they are present or not. The fading has to do with where the maker is in relation to the screen edges. At the edge of the screen its fully visible and in the centre it fades.

It's also great to mark enemy positions with. Kinda cheating though.

You can disable it in difficulty as already mentioned. But it will still be shown in GPS equipped vehicles. Means that you can turn off this cheat for infantry which can be used to "testmark" given positions and get distance to it - really bad cheat imho, at least when you block spacebar scan.

During HALO you should always have access to GPS anyway (required item, and I'm talking HALO here, not general MFF), use this to aim for a marker instead of magic waypoint, easy enough given the typical HALO heights and glide distances used in Arma missions.

For GPS equipped vehicles, the waypoint will be shown. So pilots etc still get their waypoints, and I'm fine with that :)
