Z-fighting

Recommended Posts

Is there a way to tweak / fix the z-fighting in Arma2?

When i scope / binoc/ look at buildings in the distance, the windows textures and roof textures are always flashing. I believe this happens at more places in the Arma2 world. It also causes seeing white lines on the ground when you're flying in certain locations.

Anyway it shouldn't be hard to fix. I remember with nvidia cards there used to be a z-buffer something tweak that could fix the issue. Can't find it now though... My guess is it would be better done by BIS themselves.

Any takers?

winxp sp2-9600GT

*edit* I'm aware this issue has been discussed / mentioned in other threads, before you guys post links. I'm after a solution either on a driver level or in-game (prefered). For now, take it as another mention of z-fighting in Arma2.

It would help if you could provide a sample mission where it always/frequently happens.

In addition a few screens/a video to highlight the objects would be great.

you can try not using HQ AF in your 3D setting CP.and 200% fill/3drez in the in game vid options.

It happens everywhere on both Utes/Chernarus and as Zeep says it's been discussed quite alot. To see it in full effect all you have to do is place yourself as a sniper/officer 500-600 m away from houses in a city and look at them with scope/binocs, some specific houses/buidlings flickers really bad (look around window frames etc) and sometimes it gets even worse if the bulding has been destroyed and are ruble.

It's visible on others objects as well, like stone hedges, parts of tree trunks, soldiers helmets etc. but it's really obvious on houses/buildings in a city if you look at them from far distance in scope/binocs.

One interesting thing I noticed recently is that if you are are a commander/gunner in a tank (I tested in a M1A1) and the tank was stationary and looking thru the optics (max zoomin) the flickering/Z-fighting was gone while you kept your mouse completely still but as soon you started to move your view just a little it's there again. I'm not smart enough to draw an actual conclusion about why but this may indicate there may be a way to fix/improve it???

Unfortunately those settings doesn't really help. Postprocessing on high does mask it somewhat due to the blurred picture but it's still there and personally I can't stand Postprocessing at all and have it disabled.

I've been trying to find a solution to this issue for a long time but no go so if anyone find a cure I'm all ears.

Personally I think this is an engine thing and only BIS will be able to fix/improve it. Hope they do since it's a immersion killer at least for me/others who like to play as a sniper.

Yet if the BI dev's can reproduce an error very easily, it is more likely to get fixed.

Agree, the more information and repro steps about an issue BIS have higher is the chance so we should all strive for providing as much (relevant) information as possible...

I assume we are talking about this one:

Textures flickering / high resolution textures not loading

Had to fire up my other computer since I have issue with http://dev-heaven.net on this one. To answer your question, yes this is the issue (looked at video made by basilbrush).

Just for the record, I'm using latest beta build (currently 60141) on XP 32-bit and a nVidia GTX 260 with 191.07 WHQL drivers but this issue have been there since 1.00 (was also in ArmA I)

Also, thanks for relaying my input over there since I usually don't visit it due to the browser issue on my work machine (still using IE6 engine and Maxthon Classic on this and for a reason).

CIT is a great initiative and will hopefully help BIS to make a great game/sim even better and we will all benefit from it!

Used the camera.sqs and (numpad +) to zoom full onto a couple of tanks far away. Man talk about Z-Fighting! More like WW-Z (World War Z!).

I always thaught it was textures that was digging into its objects (models). Shows how much i know of 3D stuff lol. :)
