Can't Connect to Any Server

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am using steam. I have tried launching as Combined Operations and as Operation Arrowhead. I have no technical skills and there is nothing that tells me what is wrong. I have tried connecting to many different servers with people in them. I can get to the first area where it says what team I am on and shows all the squads. Once I hit ok, it starts to download. Then I see it say "waiting for host" and I am back at the server list. It never actually tells me why so I don't know how to fix it. Happens to all servers I try and join.

I have latest version through steam. Also says mine matches with servers I try and join into.

That sounds like an addon problem.

If you don't have the servers addons, you get "kicked" like that.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like it

No that sounds like a BattlEye problem. Whenever you get kicked out of the server once you are past the briefing with no (error) message at all, its most likely that Battleye failed to initialize.

Right-click on your steam games list entry and choose "Reinstall Battleye" or something. If that doesn't help, make sure it is in fact battleye by trying to connect to a server which is NOT running Battleye (you can see that as an info in the server list).

Thanks a lot guys. Will try reinstalling battle-eye and test it between a yes and no battle-eye server and post back.

How can you tell what addons servers have from the steam server list? I know it shows expansions and says PMC light and BAF light. If I never bought PMC or BAF, does that mean I can't play in these ones with light version either?

remember

you must run once ARMA 2 before running ARMA 2: Combined Operations mode on STEAM

that's because the first run (also must do it once after verify file integrity)

writes path entry into registry

starting steam via 'run as Administrator'is also recommended

It´s not an addon or any other problem. At least not on my side. I have this problem since i´ve bought ArmA2 and OA via Steam. I`ve reinstalled my PC often enough, i´ve changed Routers, I was connected directly with the DSL-Line using a Modem only without any Router or Firewall Policies. Also i´ve deactivated my Windows Firewall as well.

I´ve run Steam as Admin, i´ve reinstalled Battleeye whatsever but nothing helps. It downloads the particular map. After that "Receiving Data" is displayed and that´s all about it. After 2 minutes i´m getting "Sync lost" from the server.

I´ve tried to join servers with and without Battleeye Support. Either way I cannot join. However if I open up a session, everyone can connect without any problem at all.

2nd thing i´ve tried:

A friend has started to play around with the ArmA2 Editor and did a small simple mission. The map file is only 20 KB in size so nothing special at all. I´ve tried to connect to him without success. Same problem as above mentioned. Now what i´ve done is, i´ve copied the PBO file from the MPMissionsCache directory directly into the MPMissions Folder of ArmA2OA. Then i´ve tried to connect again and viola it worked. Strange behaviour isn´t it?

3rd thing:

I´ve tried to join a public server called "anrop LINKOPING" or something. It´s running the Domination Map which is approx. 2.6MB in size. I`ve connected and it downloaded the Map but then same problem "Receiving Data" and after 2 minutes I got a timeout from the server. Meanwhile my friend was on that server as well and connected without a problem. After that we compared the filesize of both maps and they are identical. Now with this being said i´ve tried the same strategy as described above: Copied the PBO file from the MPMissionsCache Folder into the MPMissions Directory of the game directly.

Strange thing is now that it starts to redownload the map again even if I have the map installed? Why is that? It did not download the 20KB map from my friend when i´ve copied it into the MPMissions Folder. So regardless what i´m trying it seems to me that it might be problably an IP-Packet problem, maybe MTU or something else and might not be solved either by myself, the community nor Bohemia.

I don´t know if I have any other chance to verify or to strace down the problem I have but i´ve done all human possible steps to verify that it is not my PC nor my Router or DSL connection or even Firewall Policies. I´ve used DMZ settings and tried explicit Port Forwardings as well. Nothing helped!

Is there any other way to dump such problems by the game itself? I would like to trace down the problem that happens to me everytime after the "Receiving Data" problem. Something must be the reason for this strange problem.

I also have Arma1 installed and i´m able to connect to every single public server that is available. Everything is running smooth as expected and it´s hell of fun to play Arma1 without any connection issues.

ArmA2 is dead for me as of this moment..... Not usable but only offline play which is boring.

just my 2 cents.....

right click on your Arma2OA shortcut or .exe and select 'Run as administrator'

There are a lot of these kind of threads on here but none of the discussions helped me at all. There is no solution yet to get the game running using Multiplayer which is sad. I´m really peeved about it. And please don´t get started again with did you forward Ports or do you have the latest GFX drivers installed and such stuff. I´ve gone through all these things and i´m not a newbie to the PC world.

I´ll stick with ARMA1. At least that game is running smooth, stable and of course MP is working flawless.

It must be a security related thing. I guess Windows doesnt allow ArmA2 to handle the downloaded mission file.

You could try to make ArmA2 save the file in another position by adding this to the start link:

-profiles=c:\temp\ArmA2config

Or you could try to run ArmA2 without any kind of overreacting antivirus in the background ;)

Thanks for your reply. Well to be honest i´m running Windows 7 x64 Professional German with a fully enabled Admin Account since i´ve activated that one in the Account Manager Settings of Windows. Also i´ve deactivated the UAC which is sometimes really annoying even as Admin. I know it´s good for security but it´s not helping to find a solution

I would like to refer to an Issue Ticket where another guy has the exact same issues as I do. I´m already sitting here for a couple of hours doing more tests etc.

Yes I have McAfee AntiVirus Plus running but to negate the assumption that it might be the AV program I cannot confirm it since i´m getting these issues without any AV Programs or Firewalls enabled.

I´ve spent days by reinstalling Windows from scratch without any AVs installed, deactivated the internal Windows FW and put my PC into the DMZ of my Router and made sure that the correct internal IP of my PC is put into the DMZ Settings of my Router. This should make sure that my PC is exposed to the WWW without any interference.

I`m really clueless as of this point.

I have no addons installed, i´ve launched ArmA2 OA and also ArmA2 Combined Ops. Also i´ve ArmA2 installed without Addons and even in the stock ArmA2 game i´m unable to join any server whereby friends without addons installed do not have a single issue while connecting.

Hmmm i'm on WinXP so i dunno if disabling UAC should turn off all user hdd security (how do you tell if you dont work at MS?)

I found this thread: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=89391

This guy is on WinXP too so it might be a STEAM related problem. Maybe Steam secures all its files underneath the main dir so they cant be changed/moved by any application while running a game.

In that case the steam forums should be a good point to start your journey.

As i see it you have 3 options:

1. Try to get hold of somebody at the Steam forums and see what they can do

2. Buy the game again (as non steam version). Its really cheap atm >> http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?p=1824411#post1824411

3. Try the profile-Startparameter tip i gave you and pray for the best.
