Hardware Issues: Tips/Tricks/Solutions
TheReddog replied to Jack-UK's topic in ARMA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Well right now I have it sort of sorted out. Running the game at 1280x1024 with everything on normal including AF and shadows the game runs pretty fine, seems post processing had the most effect on this laggy bush situation. I moved it from high to low and it made a huge difference. Only problem is I get that weird strobing HDR bullshit at this setting. Do any of you chaps know if altering the HDR precision alone will leave all the post processing effects off and just bump up the HDR? -
Hello, just encountered a bug with the NVG's last night. Was playing an MP coop mission in a night time map and as I was using my NVG's whenever I turned my head in certain directions the NVG would flicker rapidly black and then on again. Then eventually stopped working altogether. I would have the monocular circle field of view still but no night vision (ie. everything looked as if I had them off and I couldn't see shit). Anyone else experienced this?

Yep that was me mate, I had cut down 15 of those northern sahrani bastards before my NVG's failed Problem is even if the flush thing works it's hardly practical in the middle of a shootout

Stripped down, OFP-like graphics, anyone?
TheReddog replied to 5133p39's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
I would be interested in a mod that stripped down the bushes. It is nothing short of infuriating to have the game running beautifully smooth on your E6600, 2GB RAM, 8800GTS system only to have it run into a 7 fps wall as you look at a bush. -

I got that too, and I bet that majority here got it too. It has something to do with the way vegetation is coded(not using shaders, but something else i dont remember the of) Yeah but this is ridiculous, I have played this game firstly on a 6800GT and then on an x1950 (both AGP versions) and while it was never great on both the bushes never lagged me out this bad. Are the issues with ArmA and the 8800 series really this bad? Honestly I think BIS need to take a long hard look at this engine because when I can fire up Oblivion, max it out and not have it drop below 30fps in a dense forest and then be dragged to 5fps looking at a single bloody bush in the middle of a desert in ArmA it spells one thing, BAD ENGINE! It honestly just stupefies beyond imagination that in the middle of a city in a massive fire fight I get a smooth as butter frame rate but looking at a single bush cuts me down at the knees. -

Ok, Arma 1.08, I can run the game with most things high and it is smooth except there are certain bushes and vegetation that cause my frame rate to dive into single digits. It happens even with everything on low. My system is as follows; Intel Core2Duo E6600 MSI 965P 2GB Corsair Twinx2 DDR2 800Mhz Gainward 8800 GTS 320 Any ideas? -
I know exactly what the OP is talking about, I have just installed ArmA 1.05 on my newly built system and am running into this issue. Can run it easily with everything on high and it play smooth until I look at certain types of bush, not just any type but the dark, dense, waist height ones. Looking at one of those is instant 5fps, regardless of the details settings though low shaders makes it happen less frequently. I didn't have this issue at all with my 6800GT or x1950 Pro. New system; E6600 C2D 2GB DDR2 800Mhz MSI 965P Gainward 8800 GTS 320 (running 158.12 Nvidia's) Downloading patch 1.08, lets hope it fixes things. Oh and also the system performs absolutely stellar in all other games ArmA just cuts it down at the knees through incompatibility or slip shod coding or both. 3D Mark '06 score 8935. ***EDIT*** Patching to 1.08 has alleviated the problem to a degree however it is still there. Just noticed too it isn't so much the fps dropping as the mouse lagging!

It's pretty damn tasteless, especially int he fact that three people are essentially 'competing' for a kidney. FYI, over here you are asked when you get your drivers license if you want to be an organ donor and if you say yes it is written on the back. I said yes but god/allah/budda help anyone who gets my liver

Operation Flashpoint 2 officially announced
TheReddog replied to imported_bör's topic in OFFTOPIC - Games & Gaming
OFP 2 should ditch the whole hypothetical island nation thing and be about the Warsaw Pact countries invading Western Europe/USA in the 80's. -
OK, so I've got all of the components of the system together and will be doing the build over the weekend, the full lineup is; Intel Core2Duo E6600 MSI P965 Platinum 2GB Corsair Twin2x PC 6400 (800Mhz) Gainward 8800GTS 320MB Western Digital 320GB SATAII HDD 7200rpm w/16MB Cache Pioneer DVD-112 DVD-RW +- DL Thermaltake Soprano case w/430W PSU Thermaltake 250W PCI-E GPU Booster <- I already owned this before and though why not, it'll give the 8800 stable and steady power. I'll probably set up two 50GB partitions, one for XP SP2 and one for Vista, after this I'll create two 100GB partitions for storage. So how do you guys think it'll run ArmA?

I say forget your AK vs M16 garbage, they're both great rifles int heir own ways, however the FN FAL owns them both (if you don't mind the weight)

Serbian Special Forces Project

Are there going to be realistic missions? Like infiltrate village and order civilians to dig ditch, shoot civilians and push them into ditch, bring in army bull dozer and fill it in. -
http://www.armedassault.info/pics/news/lw1.jpg When I was looking at this picture here I was just thinking, "Firing = ringing the lunch bell" Taking an M16/M4 series weapon into a dino rich environment would be akin to suicide, you'd be crazy to carry anything under 7.62 NATO. You'd probably also want a lot of under slung grenade launchers and the odd .50 or two in your squad to take out the big boys
-
Until it actually focuses on what you are aiming at it is nothing but pointless attempted eye candy. It'd make much more sense if the blur was not present until you actually shouldered your gun and then it was centered on your point of aim. I wish I could have the other post processing effects without the blur...

I am like a total noob at Paintshop, so what I want to know is like if I supply front and side images of my ugly mug would one of you fine blokes be kind enough to make a custom face out of it?!?!!?

He's right about the AI, on that mission in the campaign where you are attacking their landing force I got shot from far off and watched the camera track back through a big clump bushes, a couple of clumps of threes and over the ridge on the water where the AI who shot me was crouched with long grass in front of him. There was no way he could see me and it wasn't random fire either it was an aimed burst that killed me. Same thing in the first sabotage mission where you are trying to destroy the armor at night, I crawled prone onto a little hill to look at their base and as soon as I came over every bloody AI saw me instantly and lit me up, none of them had NVG's either. Both of these instances were with the AI at Veteran levels, so I turned the difficulty down and it somewhat fixed it but they still pull crazy shit off sometimes. I neither play BF2 or any other arcade crap, and sticking your head in the sand and flaming some guy about how he's a BF2 kid isn't going to make the problem go away nor does it make you look anything but a complete arsehole walker.

Yes (also @da12Monkey), we're planning to use the ArmA content, at least until we have the capacities to replace it. As we are speaking of historical context, does anyone here have RL information about rilfe-fired mortar as it was implemented in OFP? Um, wasn't it just an M203? I don't remember OFP having rifle grenades, there was the M203 for the M16 series rifles and the GP25 (or was it a GP30?) for the AK series.

Personally, yes I am disappointed with ArmA quite a bit but at the same time I can still see it is a good game at its core and there is muchos fun to be had with it. What really annoys me though is the rabid fanboyism that surrounds the game, whether it's people talking it up to a stupid extent or flaming anyone who suggests it is less than sublime gaming perfection. I remember first checking out the forums after it was just released to see how it was being received and hey from what the people were saying in the 'First Impressions' thread it was like the game was the second coming of Jesus (if you believe in such nonsense). It was all "ArmA is incredible", "it needs to be seen to be believed", "best game ever". It was very misleading to say the least and kind of added salt to the wound when I picked up a German version very cheaply on eBay and found a buggy and largely broken (as in mission script wise) game that barely ran on my system which was around the recommended specs. It was certainly a far cry from what the people in that thread were describing, it was also utterly ****ed, to be unable to progress in the campaign because of a broken script on the second mission. It also did not hold a candle to OFP in many areas like the campaign, weapon handling, sounds, mission design, everything other than the graphics basically felt severely under done. Like BIS had spent the whole time playing with the engine and then thrown together the campaign over a weekend. I persevered though and it got better with the first and second patch and so eventually I decide to get the Australian release when it comes out. Here I was disappointed again that the Aussie distributors were too bloody cheap to even provide a hard case with the game, I got a box, the manual and the game disc in a paper slip (not BIS's fault though) What still worries me though is how people misrepresent the game. I sat there watching Dyslexics video of the A10's, as awesome as it makes the game look, chuckling and thinking that someone should make a counter propaganda trailer showcasing the real Armed Assault. It should have things like; - You knock out a tank with a satchel from hundreds of meters away hidden in bushes and the crew bail and head shoot you in 0.0001 seconds. - You sit in a truck waiting while the squad leader and a lost squaddie (who's really 20m away in LOS with the leader) yell "Where are you?" and "Position xxxxx", "Mount truck at xxx" at each other for 40 minutes. - The AI nails you with the 5th round from an AK74 rapidly at 500m at which point it cuts to the player struggling to fire even semi rapidly with the AK's atrocious recoil at a target 50m away. To be even more real the AI's shot should be in the dark and through no less than 12 bushes and other assorted foliage (it should also zoom in on him to show he has no NVG's on). - Trying to turn your chopper 10 degrees only to have it execute a perfect 180 degree barrel roll twist and dive. - Assigning your AI co-pilot a target which he promptly misses badly, expending all your FFAR's in the process. - Turning a corner and having a nice 30 second preview of the games LOD system at work from point blank range. Also rather than having that NIN song as a sound track it'd have to have the Benny Hill theme. I wonder if BIS would post it on the site as well Ok I am rambling now, but I guess all in all I could say ArmA is underwhelming if not a bit disappointing, especially for someone who wanted to have a decent SP experience out of the box instead of having to wait for a good mod team to make one. Though it'll likely get better, but please fanboys learn to accept some criticism and not jump all over anyone that talks negatively about ArmA.
-
That's exactly what I have to do but it does not cause me too much of an issue.
-
You do get used to it, but still sometimes in ArmA it feels like rather than directly controlling your character you are requesting movements which he gets around to in due course.
-
Yes there is pivot caused by the backwards recoil movement which is why you get muzzle climb, I never said there was none. However the rifle does not slowly bob up, then down and then up again like in Arma. Recoil happens in one short sharp movement and a practiced shooter corrects it (ie. returns to point of aim) almost subconsciously. It is not so bad on the US weapons but the opfor weapons recoil animation is just atrocious. Across the board on the assault rifles recoil is also a bit strong too, these are rifles firing intermediate cartridges not traditional full power cartridges like 7.62x51 NATO, 7.62x54R, 7.92x57 Mauser etc.
-
The recoil in ArmA frankly is ****ed, a rifle recoils straight back into your shoulder. It doesn't bounce up and down as if your arms are made of bungee cord. It basically eliminates any sort of semi accurate rapid fire and what's more frustrating is that the AI isn't handicapped by it at all and will happily throw rapid and somewhat accurate fire at you. It's especially ridiculous on the AK74.
