Is that a "Nogpat" hat the first guy has got?

ArmA doesn't simulate modern 3rd gen' night vision technology (or in fact any other modern military technologies)! Â The ArmA "night vision technology" is straight out of the 1960's (but without all of the problems of blooming, streaking and distortion that the old 1st gen' devices had).

That sort of thing is meant to be for sentries - I doubt it would really work very well as a general-purpose IFF device. How many ArmA "missions" involve you going on stag so you could actually have reason to use this? Convention is/was to use challenges and responses consisting of letters from the phonetic alphabet: "Halt! Advance one and be recognised. Halt! Â [sentry gives challenge half of password eg.] Bravo Echo". Other man responds with the other half of the password eg. "Zulu Charlie" It is/was supposed to be said just loud enough for the front man only to hear - not screamed out at all and sundry to "see if they're 'friendlies' or not".

blasphemy  Yes, they don't fly very well anyway. They make much better coasters.

Which D-Day are you re-enacting? Normandy? Anzio? Salerno?

Modern Nogova Army by Plasman
Col. Faulkner replied to plasman's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
There is a school of thought that says that helicopters are best painted light grey overall (or countershaded light grey underneath and camouflage colours on the top) to make them harder to track from the ground. You could even make the Nogovar procurement people more creative than the Americans (with their ACU suits) by supplying the Nogovar army with reversible suits: Desert Nogpat on one side, Woodland Nogpat on the other. SOPs allowing Nogovar soldiers in theatre to wear whichever side outwards they like. You could even have a "special forces" suit with reversible "Urban Nogpat and Night Nogpat" (the latter favoured as trendy leisure clothing by young Nogovar civilians). Just suggestions. Â Â -
Serbian Special Forces Project

The OFPEC tag scheme was good for preventing clashes like this. -
Ah, that reminds me... [OT] When I lived in Germany, a crocodile escaped from a zoo and pursued a reign of terror in a local park - jumping out at people and devouring a few pet doggies. Obviously suffering from a rush of testosterone to the brain, the police tried to shoot it from a flying helicopter (too scared of being ambushed by the croc on the ground probably) and fired dozens of rounds without hitting it. They were then called off because of fears that someone might get hit by a stray round fired by these nutters. They eventually heeded wiser counsel and flew in a girl crocodile from another zoo and used her as a honey-trap to entice the crocodile into captivity again. [/OT]

The Arma aircraft (and tanks) are best used as scenery. "Ooh, lookit the nice airplane flyin' over!" With the current "flying tank" bugs one could also equally as truthfully say "Ooh, lookit the nice T-72 flyin' over!" Â

Iraq Modern Warfair COOP Mod
Col. Faulkner replied to {9thinf}Ghost-IMW-Dev's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Isn't that 2,000,000 polies? Two million one hundred polygons to be exact. Let's play "guess the FPS if you try to load that into ArmA" -
What are these? Modern Polish soldiers?

What evidence is there (apart from supposition) that "BIS is "learning" on ARMA before they will give full professional VBS"? Regarding "sniping" from helicopters. I recall in the film "Black Hawk Down" Durant's heli "Super Six Four" is ordered into position (quote) "to provide sniper cover". Did that mean he was meant to splat any enemy snipers spotted or that the men on board his heli are meant to "snipe" from the open doors of his helicopter (or is it just meaningless Hollywood pap)? I have always assumed the first option (with a large measure of the third option mixed in). And the ability to fire from all vehicles, not just helicopters, would be nice. I reckon that'd be pretty much an essential part of a portrayal of a 21st century "asymmetric" conflict (not that ArmA is really all that great at modelling those, of course)

Nor me. In any case the coolest vehicle in OFP was the push- bike. Bring back the push-bike!
-
It's not a bug but a feature. You know, it's hard to swim with 20 kg of gear. And the swimming speed in the game is reasonably OK for someone doing the breast-stroke wearing combat boots.

Scotsguards Other than that all I can find are berets or no hats (if you google image search it, you’ll no doubt see the British guy walking off with the Union Jack on his back, clearly not concerned with camo...)  Scots Guards!? FFS!  Actually there are lots of pics of bods on Op. Corporate wearing lids (and not just the "Scots Guards" Argies). But three random examples (out of many): Oh, and the famous booty with the flag was filmed well after the surrender, when "camo" was presumably less of a concern than exhibitionist displays for the news photographers. I had been eagerly anticipating the release of the Falklands mod primarily for the British soldiers and personal weapons, especially after all we'd heard about the research put into ensuring the authenticity of the models. Now, having seen them, I wish I could say that I was more impressed with them. I think the aircraft, landscapes and ships are great, and I appreciate the work involved in creating all of this, but I do tend to think that the soldiers let the side down a bit.

where is the OFP addon diversity?
Col. Faulkner replied to Albert Schweitzer's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Well, I for one am completely confident that we'll ultimately see the same astonishing variety of addons in ArmA as we saw in OFP; running the entire gamut from the sublime to the frankly ridiculous. I think maybe you're just being a bit impatient (as am I, I have to admit). -
Having tried the "HEAT" rounds in the game they may as well be cabbages!

mod idea to beat all others
Col. Faulkner replied to sirex's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
You could do it in Av-8s to make it more "challenging". -
Except that whatever it is that the "tanks" in ArmA actually "simulate", it's not 21st Century Main Battle Tanks - they seem more like something the A-Team would make out of an old golf cart, a pop-rivet gun and some wriggly-tin.
-
Something I was wondering about: is it in fact legal to broadcast these music tracks like this?
-
Agreed, but first the AI would need to know and act on the concept of "keeping their heads down when fired upon" (which they don't at the moment).

Yet another ArmA sound modification
Col. Faulkner replied to chammy's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Those Swedes have got no idea how to use those AT4 HEs! We ArmA veterans all know that after firing they should sling the empty tube high up on their left shoulder, lie down, flap their arms about spastically for about 4 seconds like someone having a fit and then pull their rifle out. Â I wish someone could make a good M240/GPMG sound. It has a distinctive metallic sputtering sound when you fire it that I've not heard any of the sound packs adequately capture yet. -
Modern Nogova Army by Plasman
Col. Faulkner replied to plasman's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
Strictly, the continent of America doesn't exist in Arma either. These "Nogpat" suits are very reminiscent of the Waffen SS autumn camouflage patterns ("Plane Tree Type 6", for example). Despite the carefully posed screenshots there, they'd likely be less than optimal in a densely forested environment. Is there a "Woodland Nogpat" too?
