    I think that I can explain it. It all depends on the BMP. As your squad carries no AT weapon the BMP is a VERY serious threat. So its best to take cover until the cobra arrives. If you're feeling brave/foolish there is a crate at the top of the rise that has an RPG-7 (just before the UAZ under the camo netting). Also don't forget that you can immobilise the BMP by shooting out its tires (takes several shots). After that it should be fairly simple advance to the airfield. Personally I've found that a combination of Robalo's ASR AI mod and the SLX Lite mod from Gunter ensures that AI react differently every time, thereby keeping me on my toes.
  2. Unless the 303 has got a scope, it's ridiculous to engage past 300m, let alone 1000m. Iron sights just don't allow it, even if the rifle itself is accurate out to 500m.

    Ha now those arrogant capitalist pigs will taste the wrath of the russian air defence systems! Seriously, I know it sounds geeky, but I never though such logistical operations could look so sexy! Well done! I REALLY hope to see this in a mission. It seems to radiate fear... I also thought that the video was incredibly well shot. Just reading Wikipedia leaves me trembling in nervous anticipation: The S-300 is regarded as one of the most potent anti-aircraft missile systems currently fielded. Its radars have the ability to simultaneously track up to 100 targets while engaging up to 12. S-300 deployment time is five minutes.

    Gunter: you're absolutely right that BIS is "not going by the story". That is why this question has arisen so many times on this forum. People are confused. Which is a shame because it could be avoided. I'm afraid that you'll have to trust me on this (I'm an English native-speaker and I used to be an English teacher who now works in IT as a technical writer) - stating that a game is an expansion implicity suggests that you require the original to play. However, both you and I know that this is not the case for OA. That is why, OA is described as a standalone expansion. As for you refuting that OA is a sequel to A2 simply because you didn't play the campaigns, that's your choice but the facts are here: http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Armaverse_Timeline

    OK in that cause you are wrong. The important word is "standalone". This is because a standalone expansion does NOT require the original game, i.e. OA does NOT require A2. However, an expansion does require the original game. So OA is not an expansion (as it does not require A2). Whereas BAF and PMC are both expansions (as they both require OA). The minutiae of the English language are difficult to navigate so, although although "PA is standalone expansion" is technically correct, I'd suggest calling it a sequel as most people would assume that it is an expansion, which it isn't. Also OA is a sequel as the plot takes place 3 years after A2. Thx for the correction. I've updated my previous post acccordingly.

  9. Great work but just a quick reminder that I removed the mg_reload.pbo because it disabled the reload animations thereby making my reloads of MGs almost instant.

    I don't know about ACE but I've been using SLX Lite and ASR together without any apparent problems. Thanks very much for your hard work Gunter. I'll keep you up-to-date as I continue my testing.

    Wow such insightful observations. It brought a shiver down my neck just recalling similar moments ;) It's a shame that, apart from the lighting levels, it'd be difficult to represent the other aspects. There's another aspect though that might be just as significant and feasible to implement - sound attenuation. IIRC snow muffles sound signficantly. In fact snow laden trees, in particular confier forests, REALLY smother sounds. Conversely moving through snow is often more noisy than open ground. Particularly if it's old (icy) snow. I'd be great if snowy maps could carry an audio config that could influence the sound engine so as to represent these different audio attenuations. Lastly, I think that breath frosting in the air would be great. IIRC the i44 team developped a script to simulate this though it was very basic. It''d be even better if the breath was somehow influenced by the character's exhaustion and/or the ambient temperature (therefore humidity).

  13. LOL that's got to be the biggest image I've EVER seen on these forums :eek: Seriously though I fully understand your request. And I think that it is very reasonable and understandable. I can see why you'd like to compromise some realism yet keep most of the other options. My guess and, my hope, would be that something like this could easily be changed by change a value(s) in a file somewhere. Better still, would be an in-game menu that allowed you to change it real-time but I gather that's something quite difficult to accomplish. It's a shame that some that people are so uncompromising. If you think about it, any PC game inevitably makes compromises with reality. So given this, why not offer people the choice? Provided it doesn't require massive development of course! We don't want to take away precious dev time from ACRE2...
  14. Not sure if it's on your roadmap, but it'd be great if you could implement realistic whispering/talking/shouting ranges. When not using the radio, the input level of a user's audio would determine it's loudness and therefore its range, i.e. someone speaking loudly or even shouting into his mike should be heard further than someone whispering. It would nice if this was simply determined by the level of input rather than pre-determined keys. By extension, it would be AMAZING if enemy AI reacted to the voices of other troops. So that if your group had some loudmouth (which clan doesn't ;)) then he'd more likely attract the attention of AI. I can just imagine players really whispering into their mikes during a stealth mission and keeping close too, because whispering isn't heard much past half a dozen feet. Equally I can imagine players yelling into their mikes in order to be heard as far as possible? "Where are you?" Obviously in a modern conflict this would be limited due to radios but in a low-tech conflict or WW2 environment, this aspect would significantly influence gameplay.

  17. Don't bother with the PSU (unless there's something wrong with it). Save your pennies for a faster CPU. In fact a decent PSU will prolly cost almost as much as a fast (<3.2Ghz) CPU.

    Has anyone created a replacement pack for this? So that all every mission in the vanilla OA which has a BDRM2 benefits from these improved versions?
  19. Try these tweaks: a) Make sure you're running the latest patch (1.10 for A2, 1.59 for OA). The betas offer some nice improvements too! b) Edit A2's config file (something like My Documents\ArmA2\Arma2OA.cfg), find AToC=7 and change it to AToC=0 c) Tweak OA's in-game Video Settings Visibility: 15000m <= has the biggest impact so try lowering as much as possible Interface: 100% 3D res: 100% Tex: Default Vid mem: Default Anisotropic: Normal Antialiasing: disabled <= if your eyes don't bleed, otherwise "Low" ? Terrain: Normal Objects: Normal Shadows: High HDR: Medium Post-proc: Low or even Off d) Try installing these mods to scrape a few fps without sacrificing too much eye-candy: - Oktane's noBlur - SAP Clutter - GDT grass - PROPER Vegetation Tweak Visuals - PROPER Buildings Tweak Visuals e) Clean out the crap - I recommend CCleaner as it's free, light and efficient f) Defrag what's left - I recommend Defraggler as it's free, light and efficient g) Minimise your services - Gamebooster is your friend h) overclock your CPU - your Intel Core2duo 2.66 should easily be able to reach 3.0 GHz, probably 3.2 and maybe 3.4 with just air cooling
