Why is Arma 3's performance so bad?

The video settings menu shows about 32fps. (using an external program such as Fraps will add more fps). But the fps means nothing imo because in game, fps depends: What is being rendered (in viewing distance). How many AI assets you have running. Weather or not they are fighting or standing still. Cycle way-points (are big hit on CPU).. Damage collision... Video, Chipset, Audio drivers..ect I don't look at fps. The best way to tell is setting everything to full (except for view distance (VD) seeing how smooth the game plays and then slowly moving the view distance up to get an idea of - at what point your system starts to struggle. Then backing off the (VD) a little bit to give it some head room. I think it's something you have to get a feel for because every system is different. fps don't prove anything. O sorry, I have to edit my sig again, I meant to put it in there. Intel Duo E8400. I picked that CPU when I built the system over the quad cores because the quads at the time had separate access to each CPU/core's memory cache. On the other hand, the two core E8400 had shared access to the cache so for games it was faster and ArmA2 didn't support more than two cores at the time. This CPU still keeps up pretty well with today's games. By the way, anyone know how to turn off the double spacing in Firefox, or what ever is causing this to happen? Everything on post on forums comes up with a space. I don't understand why they would change something like that in an update.

Why is Arma 3's performance so bad?

@mcarma Are you familiar with how background services in windows works? If you are, sorry to be redundant. But I'll explain for those who don't know. Windows (itself) has a ton of things running in the background that are designed for allowing your computer access to services and features in both corporate and consumer environments . Many of these things you don't need running if it's just a gaming / work station. This is why I don't like Steam, it's another unnecessary. I don't care how fast a computer is, The computer will be brought to it's knees if you don't trim down background services. Also, how much stuff is running in your system tray by the clock? Think about all the programs you might have installed that are starting up with the computer, even though you might not be using them. Such as iTunes. These all consume your CPU and Memory. I realize somethings do need to run, but many things can be started with a desktop icon only when you need them. Check out Black Viper's site to see what I mean. (That link is for windows 7 specifically) You can use Autorun to see what is starting with your computer, and disable it from a friendly window. You can also see the location of where the process is starting from as well as find info on it. Also good for killing virus startup locations. Autorun. WARNING: Do not disable windows services unless you know what they are, and more specifically their dependency's. Google what this means. On a side note: @ the thread group I'm curious, how many Intel/AMD CPU cores will ArmA 3 utilize now? I think the 8 cores are out now. I need to upgrade. I'm still running with these specs below. ArmA 2 has great performance, and ArmA 3 still runs good even with all my settings @ Ultra, except for distance. I have to be conservative, but I can still set it about 45% with good performance. But I'm ready for an upgrade.

Getting ArmA 3 (AI-tanks) to behave more like ArmA 2

Thanks Chriz, That's a pretty cool mod. Just curious. I notice there is no advanced Spot Distance settings (when I click on a tank) for example. But you can do that for infantry. If I were to apply this Spot Distance setting to all three infantry crew members in the tank, would that be sufficient to apply this behavior? In other words, when you want to reduce the Spot Distance on a tank, is it the crew that executes that settings, or the tank itself that needs to have it's Spot Distance set? I don't think you can make that setting on just the tank. But it would make sense to only have to modify the crew members since they are driving. But I don't know how the scrips behave.
  4. I need to find out if this issue is mine alone, or if there are others who are experiencing the same issue after the 1.60 update? Example screen http://www.pyramid-of-wisdom.com/arma_update_00056_issue.jpg So I've been waiting for an update for over two months now. Basically, none of the default/production islands from BIS have this problem (They are working fine). On the other hand, (Every single community island add on I have installed) are not even playable. The sky's all look gray, and detail vegetation on terrain is missing. The biggest issue however, is that it looks as though the gamma is cranked all the way up in game on all my community islands. That includes The all in Arma Terrain Data Pack islands. Again, EVERY single community add on I have installed was effected by this 1.60 update. Please, is anyone else experiencing this issues since the 1.60 update? Note: updating my video drivers as shown in the screenshot made no difference. Thanks

Need to confirm if this is just on my end - update 1.60

Looks like there is no update for Podagorsk for ArmA 3. That was such a great island. I just sent FDF an email requesting one.

    The Username Change/Merge Thread

Hello, I had an account here from when I started playing back in the days of OFP. I've been posing on the fourms for many years. I don't think it was carried over from the other ArmA 2 forums, could that be the case? I can't seem to log in these forums with that info. If I remember correct, my user name was Starstreams. Or Boss-Starstreams. neither work, and i usually use the same password. Is there a way to change my username to the old name so people recognize me? Or better yet, merge them?

Need to confirm if this is just on my end - update 1.60

Thanks cosmic10r This was a pretty drastic move from BIS to force every mod maker to update their maps. I hope they don't get into the habit of breaking mods. There are a lot of maps that have not been updated, and might never be just because people get busy with their jobs ..ect. One of my all time favs was Podagorsk from this pack. There is a website for the ArmA3coop.pl mod makers, but it's in German. It seems like Armaholic is never up to date anymore.

Need to confirm if this is just on my end - update 1.60

Thanks cosmic10r and ineptitude. I knew it was because of the visual update, I just wasn't sure if it effected some people and not others. I'm assuming this visual update doesn't effect the textures on the add-on vehicles and units, only the islands? That would be a LOT of updates to have to download again. Sorry, I'm so out of date. I'm In a few classes atm and I'm getting hammered..lol Ever since I moved to California, the jobs out here pay so little and there's so many people trying to move here because of the nice weather, you pretty much have to work twice as long to make the same money you make back east or in the mid west. I'm so sorry I moved here, but my family decided to all come here. Though regarding the weather, I really miss the thunderstorms back in Chicago. @ineptaphid By the way, I had an account here from when I started playing back in the days of OFP. A fix? They just released a new update. Still have the same gamma issues on ALL mod islands. I think the devs are more concerned with pushing out expansions these days. That's what I meant when I said they've sold out. And what happened with ArmA2, it's dead and abandon? Really? It's been over two months, can't use a product I paid for.

now that 1.62 is out...how roll back to 1.58 ?

Welcome to the world of Steam. We all deserve what we get for buying into it. I'm so disgusted with the BIS team, they're basically on auto pilot doing what ever they want. I feel like there is no connection to the community anymore. like back since the start of OFP. All they care about is pushing out expansions. They've pretty much abandoned ArmA-2. This 1.60 ArmA3 update has discussed here also changed all the textures on every add-on I have installed. The default islands work fine, but all the add-ons have major gamma issues. They're not even playable. I can't believe it's been two months and still no fix. I have a product I paid for that that I can't even use. I am not spending another dime on any expansions until this issue is fixed. There are posts all over these forums with people complaining about the 1.60 issues, and what is being done?

    Mod issues with 1.60

It's been over three weeks since this update was posted - now going on a month. No fixes? I paid for something I can't even use. If it's a path issue, I would think the developers of this game could easily patch it. But it's not a path issue is it? It's a texture compatibility issue with the new shader. The textures in AmrA 3 are probably dynamic and can adapt to the new change. Personally, I don't see what advantage or effect the new update made even to the native base islands as far as the look is concerned. Like others have said: You guys decided to do a major overall on cosmetics this late in the game? That's like building an airplane and then at the last min deciding you want to put train wheels on it. It will never get off the ground. I don't get the (logic) @Jackal326 Your reasoning to defend BIS as to why they changed the string was not related to the point taro8 was making: He's asking, "why it took them this long". BIS has been in the business of programming for over 16 years now. It's not the community's fault that the option was there, naturally it would be utilized. The standard should have been set in place a long time ago. Look, people can sit back and point fingers at all the complainers (people like myself who supported this project $ for over 15 years) But that will never save the game. All it does is annoys us. And when people loose interest, the game dies, and then the forum and community goes away. There is nothing you or BIS can do about it, but open their ears up and listen to the audience. What we're experiencing now is what we call, Selling Out. When I say I'm done with ArmA, I don't mean that as a threat, I just mean I'm done with ArmA.

    Mod issues with 1.60

That's been my point all along. Another example of this is, They talked about totally removing the 2d editor in the next major update. Why not leave it, and keep them both? It's not taking up that much room. And if it is, give the customer an option to add it as a DLC. Sometimes it's faster to just load up the 2d editor, while other times the 3d ed is the tool of choice. Leave em both. Stop taking things away. I use to play a game called Sudden Strike, Then Fireglow (the developer) came out with the expansion Forever. It was an amazing extension to the already great game which had a HUGE base of users, mostly in Germany, but also in the US. Then Fireglow came out with the 3rd version of the game and changed everything, leaving out most of the assets in the editor. Guss what: Fireglow is no longer around. Regarding the issue at hand. So if this is a path issue as many are saying, I would think that would be a fairly simple patch fix for BIS. It's been a few days now, why no fix on this? We have to wait another month for the next update? @lolkij There is nothing simple about your fix, unless your audience is experienced in scripting. It's not the end user's responsibility to address these issues. They paid for a product, they did their part. By the way, I've been playing this game since the beginning of OFP, I'm not new to the game which is why I feel I can exorcise my opinion. I have a HUGE amount of respect for the developers of this game, they are extremely talented and have an eye for realism that no other game developer has IMO. But I'm very disappointed in the move to steam as well as the assets from ArmA II that were left out in ArmA 3. Even if the game is suppose to be in the future, there would be no harm had they left them in there. Being that the assets were left out because of legal licensing, forces me to believe that the BIS team are not all the original developers.

You know what's great about being from a free country? When people are too stupid to comprehend a simple point, and at the end the day when things don't work the way they should, the only problem I have to deal with is the weight of my wallet when the money isn't spent.

    Mod issues with 1.60

@the1krisrob So the team had their updates all ready? I guess they didn't work ha. Let me help you with the logic here. When you develop a game that is heavily mod based like ArmA (As advertised) You don't just decide to do a major overhaul on the display system and break all the mods that people spent countless hours working on. These are changes that should have been implemented at the beginning. This is what happens when you rush a game for release. That's the kind of thing that will kill a title. I've been alive 41 years and I've seen some of the greatest games fall into extinction because of stupid changes like this. It's a little late in the game to start playing with new shaders. @Sweedn The mods folder should have nothing to do with this. I have my mods in the root of the main game folder.

    Mod issues with 1.60

EDIT2 This is both interesting, and a major disappointment: I just checked all the built-in Islands that come with ArmA 3, there is nothing wrong with them. They look beautiful. Unfortunately, all the add-on islands that were imported into the game are not even playable from the horrendous display. That includes Chernorus and all the other popular imports. I'm guessing that BIS has special textures that adapt to this new shader. Sadly, all the add-on island developers will need to some how fixed their textures. I understand BIS has an interest to make their game look as good as possible, which is great and all. But then they should give people some kind of control handle to disable that feature for older imported islands. So basically all the hundreds of community islands are not even visually playable. The forests in Chernorus are so dark you almost can't see the bark on the trees. The trees are almost black, and the day sky is very dark purple, and the distance is being trucked / cut off.

I did that also. That's what the SPOTREP #00056 said to do anyway. I'm going to try updating my video card drivers. It could have something to do with this new shader EDIT: I just updated to the latest v368.22 nVidia drivers for my GTX-660, preforming a clean install, uninstalling everything, restarting, then installing the new drivers using the clean install option. IT did not fix the issues. All my other programs are working great, 3dsMax, Skyrim..ect Take a look at this screenshot to see my issue. http://www.pyramid-of-wisdom.com/arma_update_00056_issue.jpg

I'm not able to start a new topic for some reason, but to add to what you said. This update broke a few things for me also. I'm having gamma issues and missing large patches of ground covering, grass, weeds..ect. It's one thing after another. Between Steam and everything else, I'm about to retire this game and move on. It's been a wonderful 15 years up till now. 3DEN Editor - Localization/translation feedback

There was a discussion on the forums here a while back stating that the 2D editor will be completely replaced. That sounds great, but I hope the developers implement a 2d editor view for Top-down view. Has anyone heard any news on that? I think it would be a major disadvantage to completely remove any Top-Down view. I'm really excited about this 3D editor. But with any 3D editor, there are benefits to switching back and forth between 3d and 2d for navigation as well as visual map layouts.
