US Government to consider flying car

Recommended Posts

Ive just found this, its really a strange bit of kit to be using in the battlefield I think... lol

Imagine it... anyways, here is the news topic in question and some pics with it.

The ultimate SUV will make urban traffic jams a thing of the past - it flies.

The AVX Transformer (TX) is the result of a challenge by the American Government military development agency DARPA. It asked someone to come up with the ultimate go-anywhere four-seat vehicle for combat use.

American company ATX, a military helicopter manufacturer from Texas, took up the challenge. Its proposal for a flying 4x4 is possibly the most mobile SUV ever - and certainly the most extreme.

It's capable of 30mph on rough terrain, 80mph on a normal road and 140mph in the air. It can take off and land vertically from any sort of ground and converts to flight mode in just one minute.

A 250 nautical mile range (around 280 miles on land) is possible from a single tank, and it can be easily converted into a fully equipped medical vehicle in war situations. It has been designed so that even a non-pilot could easily take to the skies.

The US Government is now considering the proposal, though it will be some time before a decision on production is made.

If you have the go-anywhere ability of the helicopter, why would you roll around in it on wheels?

Maybe a stealthy approach? multi purpose, save fuel? errr abilty to land and move to a location which it would be impossible to land in? rapid responce?

Btw not trying to be an *****, just throwing some ideas up in the air.

Thats my worry too, the rotor blades looks exposed, not something you would drive into battle and then rely on flying you out of it again.

Hi all

A British made flying car has already flown and drove from London to Timbuktu. The Parajet Sky Car, a proof of concept dune buggy powered by a big propulsion fan on the back and fabric para wing.

Oh and it is of course road legal.

A version has been proposed to include two turbofan engines, fully enclosed lightweight carbon fibre 6 person cockpit and chasis, improved dual mode automated suspension for road and landing, a back up parchute release system and emergency flotation device.

Of additional interest is the NASA Puffin Low Noise Electric VTOL Personal Air Vehicle.

Oh Course the next wave is the space car!

Again the Brits were there first!
