Driver AI

Recommended Posts

New to the ArmA series with OA...Is there anything that can be done to improve the AI driving? Hidden settings, mods maybe? I have a good amount of cpu to throw around if there was a setting to allocate more to AI, etc.

I'm at the first campaign mission involving an abrams and 3 bradleys driving towards the crash site. I try to stay in the commander seat on the abrams and give 'move to' orders, either with the map or targeting outside, but my driver and the drivers in the bradley seem like they are drunk... The bradleys are especially funny and spend most of the time repeatedly crashing into each other or just plain getting stuck together or on terrain. It's all quite frustrating in a game that up until this has simply blown me away.

Thanks

It just gets worse too, hope PR releases soon and we can forget about all this Artificial 'Intelligence' crap.

The AI has a weird habit of terribly overshooting halts when in formation. You come to a stop at the head of a column formation and all the vehicles wander around you to the sides trying to keep going 20m or so.

It seems to have goten a bit worse in OA. But I think it is becouse of the harsh terrain. I had 5 M1's that I ordered from the southern airport to the center west side of the map. Instead of following some roads they took the dirrect route. Well some of those mountains in there are pretty tuff. and those abrams cannot get over there. Then anouther time I had a few MTVR's. Now I figured these would tend to stick to the roads. I cant remmeber the name of the city. but its on the south west side of the map. I ordered several MTVR's to move north up the road . Instead of following the road up they went offroad. Not a good idea in this mountainus terrian.

At anyrate what I have found is I must order them togo much shorter distances then I could on chenarus. And if there is any difficutl terrain you will need todo even smaller distance orders.

Drivers in "Safe" stick to roads like glue while "Danger" actively avoids roads. "Aware" is somewhere in the middle. "Stealth" is probably somewhere between "Danger" and "Aware."

Takistan road system is a weird layout with many greater than 90 degree corners that the AI loves to cut.

What a shame. Using column formation all the time helped somewhat.

The drivers don't seem to be aware of the maps in anyway still. I have had my driver go straight into a building and keep flooring it in place like he was waiting for it to move out of the way. They pretty much just go in a straight line to any way point. No consideration for roads or inclination or anything...

Thanks, I'll try the safe/dange/stealth settings. In the campaign mission I mention, there's a 180 deg turn through the passe that you're supposed to escort the convoy through... I've had the bradleys plunge down the very steep hill approaching the turn because my tank had gotten too far ahead and that was the shortest path I guess.

Oh another thing to remember. "Safe" mode FORCES column formation. You can't have a "safe" staggered column or file (column compact).

I set up a convoy of HMMVs with 2 MTVRs at the end in Takistan, to go set up an FOB of sorts in a warfare mission. I set them in order, on a road, pointing in the direction I wanted to go. I staged them 1 by 1.

Then I made my HMMVs team green, and the support vehicles team yellow. Told my HMMVs, which were in order and at the front, to move forward down the road 200 yards. They immediately started to try to turn around for some reason, and ended up in a cluster-fu... err... in a mess, when all they had to do is move forward in the direction they were pointing.

I dont know whats wrong with AI driving, but even the simplest things in a convoy, in close-column or regular column formation isnt easy. Maybe it was because I was using teams. not pretty. I ended up leading in my MTVR and just driving away, telling them to return to formation. THey eventually sorted out and followed me - but having me in the lead vehicle, and having an MTVR as lead is NOT even close to optimal.

<sigh>

OA's driver AI for wheeled vehicles on roads is spectacular. They drive far better than I can. They stay right, stick to the roads and don't get crazy. Try commanding a HMMWV or Stryker to drive somewhere.

Now, convoys and armored vehicles are something entirely different. Hopefully they'll manage to do for armor what they've done for wheeled vehicles.

AI driving skills is a problem that exists since OFP. BIS for now was unable to fix this matter in question. I had some freakin' hillarious moments when working on my missions. seems that the AI is continiously drunk.LOL:D

It is quite an undertaking to make missions with AI driven vehicles.

I really hope that one day this can be improved.

Kind regards
