Enable VBS2 view setting in AA2???

Recommended Posts

I downloaded the free VBS2 Lite UK version and in the video option menu I see two viewdistance settings:

No.1- the normal view distance setting (AA2 has this one with lowest 500m,highest 10000m?)

No.2- the 'object view distance setting' (VBS2 Only!!! with lowest 3000! and highest ?????? too high!):p

As we all know in AA2, objects like men, tanks, trees etc will suddenly disapear after 3000m, even you set your No.1 view setting to 10000m. That's really unrealistic. But in VBS2 which only uses the AA1 engine, it can enbale No.2 view setting and set it to at least 3000m. If your pc can handle 6000m, it's ok to set 6000m!

So it is not a tech problem for BI to enable No.2 'object view distance setting' in AA2, it is a problem that BI is willing to give us the option!

Do hope the BI develope team can see this and enable the option in the next patch, thanks!

At the moment object draw distance is set by the viewdistance. I think it works fine how it is and performance, at least doesn't seem to be impeded so much by it.

The only problem is that at lower viewdistances/fog objects have a habbit of suddenly popping up out of nowhere, which just looks sloppy and should be fixed.

And also, there is a suggestions sub-forum, incase you didn't already notice.

Sorry for posting two posts, I simply want more people to see this problem. Although it is not a critical thing, I don't think people will reject it if it is avaliable. Having more choices is better than not.

Dead3yez, the pop-up problem you talked about is also a very old 'bug' of the game since OFP. If we have the 'VBS2 view setting', then we can set No.1 to a value of your like and set No.2 to a value a bit larger than that of No.1, say, No.1=2000m, No.2=2200m, so what will happen? Ha, there will never be any pop-up thing! Objects are already there when we move forward. For me, I want to set No.1=6000m, No.2=6200m.

Now if BI can make two view settings in the next patch, everyone will be happy! For BI it is an easy thing, so why not do it?

By the way, I tried to use the commandline 'Maxobjectsviewsetting=6000;' of vbs2.cfg in arma2.cfg, but it seems no effect. Hope this can give some MODer a hint to make a mod before BI officially do it.

Try downloading VBS2 lite to test it, it is free of charge!

yeah this gamebreaker problem with Arma2 is well known, however there's a brilliant mod to correct it, called '@proper' or something, makes object drawdistance the same as viewdistance. I never play without it.

Try a search for it if you're interested, I will put the link here if I can find it...

Already using '@proper' mod. But only the buildng view distance mod is useful. The rest things, trees, tanks, soldiers, none works. After 3000m, they just disappear.

Oh, one thing, this problem is mainly for view distance set to be more than 6000m. If your setting is lower than 6000m, you will see more pop-up problem.

In AA2, objects view distance = view distance / 2.

So you set view distance to 2000m then objects can only be seen within 1000m!

Yeah it looks weird when your flying and have targeted a vehicle next to some buildings, you can see the buildings but the tank is invisible until you get closer and it magically pops up :p

VBS2 can handle that since its running on a simpler engine graphics wise(arma1?).

We are talking about low res(they are 3000m+ away) vehicles and other important objects.

For game engine, it is not a problem. High end pc can handle view distance upto 9500m with objects at 10000m. Intel i7 980, 5970 CF etc ....................

Even if you only set view distance to 2000m, you will see lots pop-up things in 1000m range. So with low end pc, you will encounter the same problem no matter what VD you set.

Just because it is available in a 2500$ simulation means not automatically you get it also in a patch for your 50$ game.

continuation from the other topic.

On topic, what does how much we pay have to do with adding another view distance option? It's not like it costs bis $2450 to implement this feature :)

Since certain mods kinda already have the ability to do this it can't be too hard to do, so it'd be good to have it in ArmA 2, possibly in OA.

Ha, it is not the problem of money, as the VBS2 lite UK/US/ADF versions are all free! In the free version BI gives us the option. It's not a tech problem either, because VBS2 is based on AA1 engine. With AA2 engine, things could be better.
