meade95 0 Posted June 2, 2010 I seem to find ARMA2 (when talking Infantry) best used with 6 man or less Fire teams. Playing SP. Is there any tips for controling larger groups. The control system just seems cumbersome when trying to control multiple groups. The space bar constantly hightling all groups tends to get troublesome / when trying to direct orders. It would be nice if the space bar could be set just for your "A-Team" more or less....and you would have to hit the Shift-XYZ key in order to bring up the others. I understand the assigning teams ability (but still, the standard space bar has you issuing orders to everyone...and it is easy to foul up and hit that). Any tips on working side by side with AI controlled other fire teams on a combined mission?
Electricleash 133 Posted June 2, 2010 Have to agree, would really like to see a better system for controlling more than 6 soldiers. Dividing them into Alpha and Bravo fireteams etc. with a single key press to select each team. The current system; team assigning green, red and then the cumbersome reselection sequence is completely unintuitive. High command can work but it requires being set up specific to the mission instead of being native.
Smurf 12 Posted June 2, 2010 Select 2-5-6-7-etc. for Team Green (whatever) Select 3-8-9-10-etc. for Team Red Select 4-11-12-15-etc. for Team Yellow. Now you just need to press Shift+2 for whole team Green, +3 for Red... It helps, but still is a pain to form a group. Commands via Space Bar just get me lost, I don´t use it. Electricleash 133 Posted June 3, 2010 Now you just need to press Shift+2 for whole team Green, +3 for Red... Ah I never knew about that shift thing i've always used the ` or the spacebar to select. Every day's a school day. Just been experimenting with the high command system with two fire teams of 4 men, one under your direct command (Alpha) and the other through assist team leader (Bravo) as a subordinate. Works well to some extent, but if you set a GET IN wp for bravo, wanting them to board two ATV's (only two slots available) then the assist leader won't divide the men between the two vehicles unfortunately and the remaining two men will just stand there. 11aTony 0 Posted June 3, 2010 This shift + F(something) works good but I still miss commanding interface from ArmA1. It was great. Made commanding much easier and faster. It would be really cool if this kind of interface returned with next patch. Furthermore this shift should be bindable to something else as well (if it is possible already, please tell me how its called in controls options).
meade95 0 Posted June 3, 2010 The assigning of (red, white, etc) teams is an option, but like you said, it is rather cumbersome / troublesome and even more so once in contact with the enemy. There are plenty of easier ways to do this, than the route BIS has choosen. Hopefully they switch it with OA/patch...... I haven't tried the "high command" module.... Does that work for small combined unit actions?
SnowSky 12 Posted June 3, 2010 I liked the old Commanding style from OFP and ArmA1 much more too. For example that you can select all |Groups | Vehicles |Single units with spacebar and then continue was awsome! Or another thing I hate in ArmA 2: If you are commander in a Tank - following situation: ArmA 1: enemy inf approaching - Space + R changes Ammo for the Main gun - he reloads - in the meantime you press space + F for switching to machine gun and then when reloadet - shoot heat. After a time comes a tank fastly Space + R for sabot - Target Tank - Fire - BOoomchaca. the same situation in ArmA2: enemy inf approaching - F$gunnernumber(maybe #3?maybe #4 - so first - watching -.-). Then #6 for actions. Then #0 for "more". Then #3 for "Heat". switching to mgun CTRL+F (if you're not dead yet) - and when reloaded main turret - shoot heat. After a time comes the tank - F$gunnernumber(maybe #3?maybe #4 - so first - watching -.-). Then #6 for actions. Then #0 for "more". Then #4 for "Sabot". Now if you're not dead yet - maybe the other tank has no ammo. because it needs hours to change ammo. Another thing I don't understand: In Operation Flashpoint - you select a unit - press right click on a unit (even friendly unit) and he will aim on it, left click was for Attack (or MoveTo if it was a friendly unit). In ArmA I you were able to give targets (only enemy units), or attack. In ArmA2 - you can't order a unit a target (with the mouse). You can tell him to engage (so he leaves formation) - or you can walk threw the list (needs long time and you can't get 100% that he aims at correct unit when there are 12 MGSoldiers 12 O'clock 100), but you can't give an easy target order (Or It is totally different to OFP and ArmA). I don't want to say that the Style of ArmA 2 is totally bad - there are things I like very much and won't miss them, but maybe it would be possible, to let the player set Options how he wants to do those things. In ambush situations, its better to just open fire and pray that your teammates do something useful.
st_dux 26 Posted June 3, 2010 Actually, you can still do the right-click-targeting thing if you open up the target menu first. It's silly, but it works.
SnowSky 12 Posted June 3, 2010 (edited) Actually, you can still do the right-click-targeting thing if you open up the target menu first. It's silly, but it works. Hehe - because of this thread I wanted to do some researches - have just seen once you have opened the "complex" commandMenu and you rightclick an enemy - he says Target that man :). Now I'll try to get also the thingy with the tank :). Mmmh - nah - I don't get it how to say in a faster "mode" to switch ammo. But while I was trying - I noticed another thing: In ArmA 1 - if you're the commander - and you kept pressing the space bar - you have seen the weapon info of your gunner - so you have seen which gun is currently selected - and if it has to be reloaded, rounds left and so on. In ArmA 2 I don't get it :(. And another thing I miss: In ArmA 1 and Operation flashpoint - if you have different teams - and there are still some whities - you where able to select the whities with the "^" tilde key (the one which has to be used to select normally all units (if double tapped) or all free units). In ArmA2 the "^" tilde key always selects all. Some like it, some not. I don't :( Edited June 3, 2010 by SnowSky other things I've found out
