Friendly competition idea?

Recommended Posts

I have an idea for a challenge in Arma 2: The longest distance kill Rules are pretty simple: go into the editor and set up a target at a certain distance, whatever you think is attainable. Then get a sniper rifle (add-ons are fine, but don't get anything bigger than an Cheytac) and start recording a video. Use a rangefinder or the spacebar if you don't have ACE to show proof. Then take the shot. Don't take more than three (3) shots for the video. If you can't get it after three restart. This could be a lotta fun, post your vids here! (I'm not currently at a computer with Arma, I'll post it tomorrow). :D

So far the longest I've seen is 1.65km. See if you can beat it.

Feedback? Good idea?

Current Winner:

Pauthority @ 2.36Km (ACE, TAC50 to be beaten w/ M107)

Think you need more restrictions maybe? Someone using ACE with wind and someone with ACE but no wind will have a great difference in skill. :)

True. Alright We'll make it sound a bit more official. Section 1 is for no ACE, use either the M24 or M107.

If you have ACE, use either the M109, M107 (same categories) or M24. Post your best ranges for each. Important: Make sure you also post the approximate elevation change from you to your target.

Here's my shot with vanilla M107.

Victim was ~300 meters below me.

That was amazing, how did you make the bullet follow like that?!

I took a shot at 2355m and hit the target. Slight side wind. I'm uploading video to youtube right now. I'm using ACE2 mod, which made this a little difficult, as the wind was constantly changing.. then finally wind calmed down to a steady side wind. Weapon was TAC-50 with tracers. Scope settings maxed out at 2000m so I had to aim higher to hit the target.

edit: oops, didn't read the small print, no TAC-50 allowed... :(

edit2: I tested from the same spot and same target with Barrett, and it would seem their ballistics are quite similar, but again wind started blowing real crazy, and couldn't get a good shot. But really, there is not much difference which weapon is used. So, I propose TAC-50 to be added to ACE class in this sniping contest.

edit3: Here's TAC-50 video:

Nice shot. We have a new winner! This could get pretty cool as the ranges get longer...

M40A3 (same as M24) vanilla

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFv9qX7aNfM&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFv9qX7aNfM&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Level ground with target. Pretty lucky to kill him with one headshot, usually it takes 2 at that distance.

M107 vanilla

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xqze_89EnU&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xqze_89EnU&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

~100 m below target. I'd try longer shots with the M107 but the bullet disappears into thin air at around 2500 meters. :butbut:

Thats some cool stuff!

That one is nice too:

Since the bullets disappear at 2500meters, we need other things than range to make it

more hard.

I've made the SSG 69 sniper rifle especially for this matter, its nice, accurate and deadly for anything until 800meters.

Lets see if YOU are able to push the boundaries, and extent the "effective" range up

to even more?

I don't think bullets disappear, I tried 2700m shots but the problem was it became so hard to get them fly that far accurately, when it was windy. Had to aim up and just guess where bullet will hit.

edit: ACE mod with wind makes sniping at longer distances very challenging. It's quite easy to shoot with vanilla version, when bullets only drop at distance. However it's soooo pleasing moment when you actually hit something at 2 kilometres with one shot on a windy day... :)

Here is a near miss at 2700m on Isla Duala, using bullet cam script by Big Dawg KS

So a close hit counts now as a kill? I'm happy with my 2,36 km kill but that 2,7km didn't hit, despite several attempts. So I shouldn't be leading the competition with 2,7 km but 2,36 km :)

Looking at that 2.7km shot, i start to wonder if the bullet would even be able to penetrate body armour at that range. If i have time later i might write an iterative python program to get a handle on how slow the bullet was going then. Need to refresh my knowledge of drag first.

Consider, Rob Furlong, a former corporal of the Canadian Forces, holds the record for the longest confirmed sniper kill in combat, at 2,430 metres (2,657 yards, or 1.51 miles). Established in 2002, the shot exceeds that of Sgt Brian Kremer of the 2nd Ranger in 2004 Iraq (2,300 meters). I think @ 2.7 Km would of been a good kill shot w/a .50 Cal.

Interestingly enough that gun he shot with probably wouldn't have even been a .50cal bullet.

Still, i would be interested to know what a reuglar .50bmg round (eg, not a extra special long range accuracy one. what the average M82a1 would be issued with) would actually do at ranges of 2.7km. wouldn't the bullet become unstable by that sort of flight length?

unless there was some force acting on the bullet it will be stable at any range.
