Can anyone else see this mouse bug!?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Since upgrading to 1.46 we have noticed a nasty mouse control bug that seems to be related to the sound delay calcutation on explosions!

Sometimes in SP and MP missions the behaves very vierd and sluggish after a while! One way we can reproduce this bug on two separate machines (one Win 98 and other Win XP) is to do the following...

 1. Start the Heavy Metal SP mission

 2. Notice how your mouse behave.

 3. Jump into the tank as a gunner.

 4. Zoom in and aim on a ridge far away.

 5. Fire a few rounds.

 6. Now when trying to move the mouse it acts

very sluggish and with a delayed action? Also if you jump

out of the tank the problem persist. For me it sometimes

dissapear when I move or does anything else but

for my friend running XP it's more likely to stay bad.

Does anyone experince the same problem?

I did another test on a mission and placed a few T-80's far away. Then zoomed in on them and fired a few rounds, and if I looked closely after the smoke vanished it looked like T-80's speeded up (like x4) just for a short while and then back to normal speed!? I'm not an expert but it looks like this problem is related to the sound delay routines and for some reason it affects the mouse control.

Oyea, tried to remove all 3:rd party add-ons since we belived one of them was causing it but the problem is still there even with stock OFP 1.46 add-ons and it happen in SP as well as MP missions (have not tried to do a clean install yet but will).

Any input greatly appreciated!

Nope, not that one. Two other however:

1 (Pretty serious): From 1.46 the free-look (*) doesnt work for me for vehicles.

2 (Less serious): Double mouse pointers in XP. Alt-Tabbing solves it.

AFAIK, the free-look mode was diabled when you enter exit the car. but you can turn it on by pressing '*' again....

Yes, thank god! I got tired of exiting vehicles and getting killed while I frantically try to get my character back under control. biggrin.gif

I have a Wireless-optical mouse(desktop computer) and i notice when there is alot of smoke or some thing that is slowing down the game i notice the mouse pointer gets sluggish. So i just alt tab out and it fixes it.Also on my laptop i notice when starting OFP, in the main menu there is always 2 mouse pointers so i alt tab out and that fixes that, i also noticed that when using the touch pad i cant click any thing(barely).Dont have a cure for it, but i use my original mouse that came with my desktop. That keeps all my touch pad problems down. smile.gif

Nope.. for instance: Gunner in M1A1. Switch to external view and try to free-look around.

Thanks for the feedback! A bit strange no one else is seeing this so I conclude it must be a 3:rd party add-on thats causing it!?

Can a "bad" 3:rd party add-on alter anything to be there

even after the add-on is removed?

Guess next step is to test with a total uninstall and then reinstall a clean OFP to see if it's still there...

Addons can't permanently change anything. They can only do it when they're installed. In the most recent patch (I believe) a feature was added to protect core settings, to prevent badly setup user addons from damaging any important settings.

The reason why your mouse lags when you fire a sabot/heat round is most likely because your videocard isn't fast enough to draw all the cloudlets. (the larger they are in the viewpoint, the more processing power they will consume). Try disabling cloudlets and see if the problem persists. Normally the lag should dissappear immediately after the smoke has dissappeared.

Thanks for clarifying about the 3:rd party addons but it confuses me even more since we never seen this problem before and nobody else seems to be able to recreate it.

The mouse problem we experince isn't the "standard" mouse lag seen in dense smoke after firing a sabot etc. Nor is it due to slow computers (AMD XP 1800+ and GeForce 2 GTS and a P4 1.8 with GeForce 3 Ti both with 256+ MB RAM)

The thing is that the problem persist long after the smoke is gone and it seems to be "triggered" by the delayed sound calculation routine since it only happens after you hear an explosion far away. The problem is still there when you jump outside the tank!?

The mouse and button click actions seems delayed (approx 1 sec). As I said I can get rid of it most times by moving around but my friend gets stuck with it and it's even there when he jump back to the intro screen making selection with mouse almost impossible.

Anyway, I'm just about to do a clean install and see if I can reproduce it again after that...

OK, looks like we pin-pointed it! The problem seems to be related to smoke and zooming, _NOT_ the delayed sound calculation that I was first suspecting...

When "cloudlets" are enabled I can recreate it every time in the Heavy Metal mission with smoke off it's never happen. The strange thing is that I could also recreate it with 1.30 after my clean install wich means that this is not new to the 1.46 patch!

My friend that uses XP and experience it much more frequent tested several MP missions and when he enabled the smoke he will get the problem almost every time. When running the same missions with smoke off it never happen for him?

For me after getting the sluggish/delayed mouse actions i can cure it in mission by either doing the following...

1. Press ESC and then disable and then enable cloudlets

(seems to be enough to go to the Video option screen

and then back again to the game...)

 or

2. By alt tabbing out to windows and back again.

Something strange is for sure going on and I wonder if BIS knows about this problem? If not where should I post for them to see it?

Maybe it's something related with the GeForce cards or a specific graphic setting? We are both using the latest 28.32 versions of the Detonator drivers. Any thoughts?

Hey,

I have this exact problem, I posted about a month ago and someone put it down to video-card pre-renderring issues, their fix didn't seem to help. So having read your posts I will try simply ALT-TABBING or turning smoke off-on as suggested.

Hi Kraygh,

Yes, the pre-rendering thing is listed in Avon Ladys FAQ but it didn't help us either, was among the first thing we tried.

I think I'm on something but don't know for sure if it help on my friends XP. Will inform this forum as soon as I verified it on the other machine so stay tuned...

OK, after some more digging I found a solution that works for me on Windows 98 SE using nVidias 28.32 driver!

Since the problem was related to the graphic (smoke) and not the sound delay I yesterday suspected some graphics settings and disabling the following settings fixed the delayed/sluggish mouse action on my machine.

- Unchecked Enable (15 bit)/16 bit/24 bit/32 bit (A)RGB pixel formats

- Uncheked Enable DXTn "FourCC" formats, S3TC

- Unchecked NVxy "FourCC" formats

This works for me but I have not yet verified if this works on my friends Windows XP. I used GeForce Tweaker to do this and you can find it on the following URL...

http://www.geforcetweak.com

Note that you can screw other apps/games up by changing settings with GTU so I strongly recommend you to do backups!

With GTU you can save profiles so I made a "OFP profile" I load just before playing OFP and other profiles for other games like F4, LB2 that want other settings, works great!

Hope it works for others to? Please report back to this forum if/when you tested it...
