second_draw 0 Posted April 8, 2002 After my old computer has been infected from everything from ad-ware to a virus which starts with X (j/k ), I have finally gone tight A$$ and i have everything from pop-up killers to what-not. I'm amazed especially by the ad cr@p everywhere. I have this program called Sygate which is free for personal use which actually monitors your programs use of the internet and some other firewall stuff. This is really cool program as it not only blocks ad-ware connecting to the net but hackers connecting to you without permission. I've realised that to survive the net (well, my computer), you have to be a tight @$$.

I never got so much junk mail in my life as I did at my old Hotmail address. I believe they actually sell your details to advertisers. Even with filters in place, I was getting a shitload every day. Tovarish 0 Posted April 8, 2002 Pretty recently ive been repeatedly getting ICQ messages from people who aren't on my list (yes I know I can block messages from people who aren't in my list, but I turned off that option since a cute girl I used to know in HS who isn't very computer literate has been trying to contact me on ICQ )...anyway these messages have a link to one of those "You are being watched while you are online, buy this software to protect your privacy!" sites, and the message is always the same: "<ICQ nic>, you are in trouble! It's a proven fact!!!!" a couple of nights ago I got it again and I finally got fed up. I replied "<his ICQ nic>, you are a Fucker! It's a proven fact!!!" His reply was something to the effect of "Sorry, nm, didn't think you'd be so dissapointed"....anyways I haven't gotten that message again since....
Supah 0 Posted April 8, 2002 Ive had that too on icq. But when i started spamming back it started to answer. Being intrigued i started to chat with it. After a few minutes i found out it was some sort of automatic response thingy. Now, being to (IRC) eggdrop bots i decided to play along with it. Its response to what you say was actually based on words you use. Quite fun, you should try it. Calling it the worst things amiginable and all it said was "I'm justin" or "I can give you free access" and stuff like that. "Stop spamming me idiot" "I'm Justin, i can give you freeaccess" and so on and so on.
Hilandor 1 Posted April 8, 2002 i had a pc too now for a few years and only ever had one virus, i dont use a firewall or virus scanner but have started using the popup stopper which is brilliant. my suggestion would be to not visit those xxx sites, dont leave ur email addy with no net company or make up one that u just use for that kinda stuff i use two emails one for my important stuff and one for the crap
InRange 1 Posted April 8, 2002 Yeah, I use my Hotmail adress for all the sites you have to register to and stuff and my regular email for important stuff. Hotmail has it's own virus scanner so you can't go wrong there.
LauryThorn 0 Posted April 8, 2002 I would turn scripting off, especially ActiveX, which is the worst. But don't mix these two things: Java and JavaScript Because they have nothing in common. Spamming the spammers would be fun, but a lot of cases, they create a email account, spam, and then shut it off. Or then they fake their address.
LauryThorn 0 Posted April 9, 2002 Just deleted 239 spam emails from my hotmail account... I use it when i have to register to somewhere.. The spam thing is amazing. Who sends all this mail? Who benefits from that?
Supah 0 Posted April 9, 2002 I dont think anyone benefits from it in the end. I think all the advertising people are subjected to nowadays makes them immume to it. The marketing guys are making their target audience so accustomed to comercials that they are learning to ignore or even filter it out.
