A question for the devs re. Chedaki.

Recommended Posts

Hey all.

Hope this is in the right section.

A mate and I were wondering where the name Chedaki has come from.

We were discussing if it maybe came from Captain Chedaki, a pilot from Star Wars? Or maybe Marshal Chedaki from Dr Who? Or is it loosely (or fully) based on real life. (Please excuse my ignorance)

Or have I just opened myself up damn good sledging. :butbut:

We googled it and the closest we found was this in Urban Dictionary.

cheda

Cheda is a word used for people who have a beast-like addiction for male genitals.

Ahh such a distinguished publication.

Regards,

Grub

If you look here: http://www.arma2.com/chernarussian-movement-of-the-red-star-chdkz_ru.html

The correct name of the Red Star Movement is: ЧерноруÑÑкое Движение КраÑной Звезды

And the Short form (every first letter): ЧДКЗ which is translated ChDKZ

Is think that Chedaki is just the western spelled form of ChDKZ.

edit: ha beside all the fast poster i did some research in time > : O

Cool, thanks for that.

That's what we figured, but you don't know unless you ask. There's no stupid questions, just stupid people :)

There's no stupid questions, just stupid people :)

it is because of getting used to something that you know, but for others has other meaning

look at 2 examples:

Youtube, people saw Polish music band "Flapjack" on YT and moan that they expected to see cartoon Flapjack,

they saw cartoon teledisc and moan that someone "stole" name

while this band released first album in 1993, teledisc is from 1997

and they moan that "they stole name" from cartoon from 2008 (started 11 years after this clip that they called being copy)

cause many teenagers in US/west know cartoon Flapjack and they think that other one is copy of something that they know better as word/name,

so , it is simply "that you used to something that you know" like people get used to menu in cellphone or menu in PC applications

people also used to Spetsnatz while it comes from Specyalnogo Naznachenya - SpecNaz - "special purpose" SpecPurp,

people think that "spetsnatz" is "elite commando unit" while every branch has it's spetsnaz , army, airborne, marines, police etc. and not only branch but even "army" (organisational structure - front>army>corps>division>brigade>battalion>company>platoon>squad) had it's specnaz unit

specnaz = commando , many people from other countries think it is "one special unit" like for example SAS or GROM or KSK or Sayeret Matkal

while it is like Seals, Green Berets and other socom type units or like some recon units

people also used that OMON is equal SWAT, while it is more riot-police, and SOBR is SWAT

The first clue to understanding the term is to remember that it was not formed in English. The developers are Czech and the term reflects Czech patterns of developing slang from abbreviations, not English references

The abbreviated name is ChDKZ - but in czech that 'Ch' sound is one letter. When pronounced in czech, the CDKZ has a softer, more flowing sound than in English (where saying Ch D K Z doesnt lend itself to creating a slang term like 'Chedaki') and Chedaki is quite a natural slang term to create from it

In short, you have to remember the term is slang from another language

EDIT - if you are wondering why i consider 'Chedaki' a Czech corruption of the ChDKZ movement (which is actually Russian/from Russian speaking part of the population), this is because those who use the term in the game are the Czech speaking population - essentially it is their slang for the movement when its name is translated into Czech.

Slang is often a very local phenomenon

people also used to Spetsnatz while it comes from Specyalnogo Naznachenya - SpecNaz - "special purpose" SpecPurp,

Forgive me asking, but wouldnt Speyalnogo Naznachenya translate more directly to 'Special Designations', not 'special purpose'?

Still, your point remains - any branch can have a special 'purpose' unit

Chedaki is a Chernarussian nickname, while the Marines sometimes shorten it to 'Daki.
