Getting started

Recommended Posts

Alright - I just bought ArmA 2 off Sprocket and it's currently downloading.

I played the original OFP and both expansions and also have ArmA 1 - but I never did much with ArmA 1. Never got any mods or even finished the campaign. Started playing other games and never picked up.

So...

What do you wish you knew when you started playing ArmA 2 that you know now?

I did a seach and didn't find any similar threads, so I figured I'd throw one up and see what I got. :)

I'm assuming the first thing to do is apply the beta patch.

Should be ok.

Check around the forums for some mods and check to see what their about.

Plenty of good maps for editor out now and more to come.

Plenty of info around the forums so search away, and above all have fun;)

Only played for a little bit last night, but wow! This game looks great!! Big improvment in immersion - I loaded up the Village Sweep mission and was stunned by what I saw. Beautiful game! I then got properly wasted trying to take the village. :D

Do yourself a favor and get the VopSound 2.1 mod, that will bring even more immersion

Check out the soundmods in the mods section too, plus the heli sound mod & vehicles :)

LOL ... I posted this looking at the previous page ^^^^^ :)

Apparently vo.2 isn't playing or developing anymore, from what I've read elsewhere by another Vo member. Vopsound on its own has a few very annoying bugs (stone, willie pete, arty flares i.e.). And those heli & vehicle mod sounds are far too loud for my personal liking, although the sounds themselves are superb.

Lately I've come to like the SOWmod for better sounds. There are things I like better with this mod, and there are things I like better with Vopsound.

With this in mind, I won't reccommend an apparently abandoned soundmod that contains bugs, when others exist that does a very good job. That being said, the original sounds are pretty damn good compared to how it used to be like, except for a few selected ones that are truly horrible.

I always thought the original OFP had horrible sounds. Just the "chunk" sound of the M16 made me cringe. ArmA 2 stock is a definite improvment over past iterations.

I'll also look into SOW - thanks. :)
