foxer 0 Posted March 26, 2002 Earthquake in afghanistan got me wondering about landmines. When the earth shakes do the land mines blow up ?
theavonlady 2 Posted March 26, 2002 How about the flip side: can an exploding mine trigger an earthquake?

Like infantry mine is more likely to explode than AT mine. If they (infantry mines) bump and fall down so that the trigger is pushed, then yes, they explode.. ( or: yes, why won't they? ) Any opinions?
Stealt Eagle 1 Posted March 26, 2002 well, all of this is just pure theory since there hasn't been any research on this area, but if the trigger on the mines are pushed, then of course they'll blow
Longinius 1 Posted March 26, 2002 Hmm, this got me thinking about fire extinguishers....if a plane crashes into a building and the building collapses, do the fire extinguishers throughout the building go off because of the pressure they are subjected to? LauryThorn 0 Posted March 26, 2002 Or, if you have a carrying papers in the office, and then all of a sudden, you are hit by a nuke, is it possible that you get paper cuts?
Burl 0 Posted March 26, 2002 Earthquake? or maybe a small atomic/nuke type devise? Burl

Fire extinguishers is a great example. I suppose they must explode or leak at least.
Tex -USMC- 0 Posted March 26, 2002 Would an earthquake trigger landmines? Personally, I doubt it, but think about this: which would you rather have triggering a landmine? a person, or an earthquake?
nordin dk 0 Posted March 26, 2002 a small earthquake where noone gets hurt
ralphwiggum 6 Posted March 26, 2002 i'm living in southern california, where any earthquake under 3.0 on richter scales is daily occurance. I last time they had big earthquake in the middle of night, i woke up, said 'oh shit' and went back to bed. i don't think mines would blow up. i heard some Anti-personal mines that got washed away by flood and landed on some place and ppl step on it and get thurt, but not earthquake. earthquake basically shakes earth and moves it around. since a mine is only activated by someone stepping on it from top, i say it's hardly the case. foxer 0 Posted March 26, 2002 with the earth shaking though, wouldn't rocks and other stuff fall on the mine ?
Longinius 1 Posted March 26, 2002 Some 4000+ people died. I dont think falling rocks were the biggest problem.
ralphwiggum 6 Posted March 26, 2002 foxer: hhmmm...good point..although chance of that happening is slim, can't be ruled out Longinius: do you think it was becuase of how the houses were built there?
foxer 0 Posted March 26, 2002 That kinda shitty how many people died, you would think their houses wouldn't be that heavy. The earthquake was only like 5.4.
Longinius 1 Posted March 26, 2002 I really doubt the deaths had anything to do with buildings. Clay huts wont hurt you that much when they collapse.
Wobble 1 Posted March 26, 2002 I really doubt the deaths had anything to do with buildings. Clay huts wont hurt you that much when they collapse. it shure as hell would if the entire roof (solid clay with straw maby) came flopping down on you.. it would probably weight several hundred pounds.. another thing to consider is that in areas like that with lots of rock, an earthquake whats called a "slide" not a landslide in the normal sense. but a phemonon where smaller rocks settle to the bottom and act like ball bearings or wheels and rivers of rocks and stones literall flow like a river.. its very crazy looking.. it actually looks like water but its all rocks just flowing.. and it doesent even have to be very steep 10 degrees is more than enough once it gets going to go a LONG way.. the major threat with this is of the slide area has mines.. because the flow could carry these mines MILES.. virtually transporting an entire minefiled to a location not known to have mines.... then ka know its gonna take at least one unsuspecting person or animal to discover the new field.. Frizbee 0 Posted March 27, 2002 Unless the landmine was really old or faulty, or the pressure plate was pushed then no, an Earthquake would not trigger the mines. The only type of mine that I know of that MIGHT go off in an earthquake would be a Bouncing Betty, which has two thin wires protruding through the ground, and it is movement in those wires that causes it to bounce up into the air and detonate, spraying ball bearings down in a 60 degree arc.
