beno_83au 1369 Posted September 8, 2009 Does anyone know of a site where I can purchase just the cd-key for Arma? I found one from 1cdkey.com but it's $35 (US I assume) and was hoping for something a little cheaper as it'd be pretty easy to buy the whole thing for nearly that much anyway. Planck 1 Posted September 8, 2009 Buying a CD key does not entitle you to this game, you must have a legitimate copy of the game files. Planck
desertjedi 3 Posted September 8, 2009 Dude, you can Arma new for under $6 in the US and Arma Gold new for under $9. Not sure why you'd even be messing with something like that.
Luke.S 10 Posted September 8, 2009 Buying a CD key does not entitle you to this game, you must have a legitimate copy of the game files.Planck So going by that logic if i bought a legal copy of the game but the disk broke then i would have to buy another copy instead of just using my existing cd key which i paid for with a copy of the game which is downloaded (which is actually legal if you have purchased and still have the game) i am not allowed to unlock it and use it legally. This isn't the case as i don't have arma but i think that logic is a bit stupid.
Planck 1 Posted September 8, 2009 Don't be silly. If you had a legitimate copy and could provide proof of purchase, I'm sure a replacement CD could be obtained from your supplier, at minimal cost, you can't expect a free replacement, after all you broke it. On the other hand, if you have an illegal copy of the game files, buying a CD key does NOT make it a legal copy. Contrary to what you say you do not buy a CD key when you buy the game, the CD key is required to install the game with. If you have downloaded a version from a legitimate source then there is no CD to break is there and if you lose or forget any key you ask your supplier for a new one. beno_83au 1369 Posted September 9, 2009 Buying a CD key does not entitle you to this game, you must have a legitimate copy of the game files.Planck I've got an original copy but lost the key sometime last year between home and having it overseas with me for 8 months, and seeing as I've reformatted my pc, I would like to install it again. I don't think it's very fair to just assume I'm using an illegal copy, and wouldn't that just activate BI's anti-pirate bug anyway, regardless of the key? @DesertJedi - Unfortunately I'm not in the US
Planck 1 Posted September 9, 2009 Nobody assumed or accused you of using an illegal copy, this was just a scenario that was mentioned. I would get in touch with the publishers that supplied your copy and explain the situation to them, maybe if you can provide any clear proof that they require that you have the original disk, they can help you. @Luke.S Nothing would change in the event that your disk was damaged by a faulty drive, the drive is not owned or maintained by the game suppliers, so they are not liable to replace the disk if it gets damaged in said drive. the_truth 10 Posted September 9, 2009 by your logic plank, if i bought the game and lost the case or the key, i would have full rights to get another one, as it's not the key i am purchasing -it's the files. maybe it was my fault i lost the key, but if that's not what i am paying for then there is no reason i should not be given another one , for free... is there? regardless of the logic - the law is very grey in this area. it is legal to make your own backup copy. it is not legal to share your backup copy , but the legality of downloading a backup when you own an original copy (broken or not) is not specifically expressed. you are obviously not allowed to download a backup when you do not own an original, but as i said - grey. i am not trying to troll, or start a fight - and i love the game and the sequel, both of which i have purchased - however treating your customers like/assuming we are criminals is not the way to win our hearts. you may have hung a lantern on it afterwards - but that is still very much the idea you expressed. I just hate when i go into a forum and see mods/devs acting as though customers are trying to rip them off. we make you, you should be going out of your way to make our experience as fun and easy as possible. BIS should send replacement discs (not keys) for free, regardless of who broke it. it would cost less than a dollar to burn and mail a disc , and liable or not the image it would portray would be , gasp - a company that actually cares about it's customers. even if hundreds broke a year, it wouldn't hurt their bottom line. i created this account to post a problem i am having in arma 1, but i simply had to reply to this. it is all too common an attitude, and it is the reason i no longer buy EA, or Ubisoft games. worry less about piracy and more about patching. make it a product people WANT to own, and those that still pirate it would never have bought it in the first place. not that that excuses them, but there is no sense wasting your energy on people that would never have contributed anyway. Planck 1 Posted September 9, 2009 Nevertheless, if you have a problem with a lost key or a broken disk, the place you purchased the game from, or the publisher, are the places to go. They will possibly help you if you can prove you have purchased the game, that is how it is, like it or not. Planck
oyman 0 Posted September 9, 2009 when i lost my cd key for ofp, I had to email codemasters about it. To show proof that I had the cd they wanted me to take a picture of my monitor with the email they sent back to me up on the screen and with the ofp cd infront of monitor. couple hours later got a new cd key. the_truth 10 Posted September 9, 2009 that is how it is, like it or not. can't really argue with that - but from a philosophical standpoint do you think that is ok? I mean, i know it's not your call , and maybe you could care less... but do you not think it a "good" thing, for a company to to do as much as possible to help customers enjoy the product they have already purchased? No it's not their fault but again, it would cost them little to nothing to make the files available freely - and without a key you can't play anyway so what's the big deal? it's not even BIS' decision in this case but the publishers as you mentioned - but you seem to be so sure that the way it is, is the way it should be - i'm curious as to why? Planck 1 Posted September 10, 2009 I'm sorry but your thinking is wrong, a company would like to help its customers if it can, but, it needs to be sure they are customers first, hence the need for proof of purchase. They can't give out the game files or new CD keys willy-nilly to anyone with a sob story. Planck
the_truth 10 Posted September 10, 2009 They can't give out the game files or new CD keys willy-nilly to anyone with a sob story. Planck i wouldn't expect them to! and of course there is a need to verify they are customers - it seems i just misread your first reply - it didn't seem as though you were that open to the idea of replacing discs and keys at all- i would never expect it for just a sob story, proof of purchase is necessary. yeah this was totally my bad in reading - gotta study english a bit better :-)

Gunter Severloh 4067 Posted September 13, 2009 Just spend $10 and get the game, more time you spending trying to figure out how to get a CD key u lost, and get another one is time your wasting when u could be playing the game already. Unless your strapping broke which i doubt you are looking to purchase a key, it wont hurt you just buy another copy. go on ebay and you can get a brand new one for less then $10. Problem solved.
