Will it ever get better?

Recommended Posts

I'm seriously considering getting this game, I'm actually just waiting on my new PC parts to arrive (core i7 920, 6gb ddr3, bfg gtx275oc)

And i swear some of the videos i've seen are truely astonishing at how awesome it all looks and feels. Especially the night time battles, but i was wondering 2 things...

Is their any chance someones going to release a mod, or if BI will patch ... the destruction and the explosion particle systems?

I mean some of the youtube videos i've seen even in HD, the explosions lack a powerful feeling, like the particle system just isnt running full out, i know its a horrible thing to compare it against but crysis because really this game is much more than crysis, but is their any chance that they or someone could patch the explosions to more like

(and yes i know even that video isnt really crysis but i was just showing it as something possible via mods, so maybe via a Arma2 mod) ??

and the other thing i find really depressing is the destruction now i understand due to scope of the game etc, and the way cover is etc that things have to be a certain way hence the different "states" of destruction...

but why is their no transition really between states, i saw several videos of a hanger getting blown up and it was horrible its like it almost flips from one state to the next to the next with no transition and little effects, am i missing something? will this be improved ?

As this is my first time arma game, i dont know how far their patching will go to improve the game but being a graphics whore, destruction and explosions really have me with mixed feelings right now on getting the game it just ruins the emotional feeling the game gives me really... is this something that will be improved in patches to come? or is it something i'll just have to deal with forever once i get the game?

ArmA 1 and Operation Flashpoint didn't have destructable buildings as far as I know, this is BIS's first time doing it and I think it's a nice attempt. Better than nothing anyway. The explosions in this game are supposed to look realistic, if you look up some videos from Iraq or Afghanistan you'll see this game recreates them pretty accurately, like in this video around the 40 second mark

or this one at 14 seconds

i understand that but what i meant was i understand its their first attempt, i was wondering if theirs any word on if they will improve this first attempt in future patches to maybe make it transition better or not look so static.

as for the explosions i understand that, but its not just the force etc that i mean...

i mean the "thickness" the smoke that i've seen just doesnt look right, it disappates too quickly and doesnt kick up the sand enough from what i've seen... i mean unless i've been watching LQ explosions, maybe someone has a nice demo HQ video of an arma 2 explosion to reverse my views?

im sure i will, i dont know why its just for some reason it bothered me, i think the explosions is more a matter of seeing a single small explosion doesnt really share the impact of being in a big battle and having explosions goingoff around you etc... ill check that out when i get the game...

destruction though really makes me bummed... the game just feels so much more polished from videos that dont show buildings or demolition... its like as soon as i see a town in a video they dont look right they dont live up to the same level as the non-building areas... or thats just what it looks like to me, i dont know if its the textures or what, but with that and the poor demo models it just makes the towns feel rushed/incomplete to me :( maybe im just spoiled by bad company and bf1943's demolition :(

In Arma1, on the smoke and possibly explosions front, DMarkwick made THE definitive mod that everybody just automatically used all the time...

Looks like the the Arma2 version is coming along nicely...

Yup DM will come through with a nice enhancement to the smoke.

cchance,

When/if you buy the game make sure to check out the mission Editors. Honestly, it's the best part of the game. Endless fun and possibilities for years. The learning curve is a bit steep at first but once you get the hang of it it's a piece of cake. Enjoy.

EDIT:

Nah cchance, the explosions pretty much look like that. Don't expect them to improve.

I'm pretty sure this isn't the case. Like A1, the explosions, smoke, etc can be enhanced by user made AddOns. Besides DM, I gotta believe someone will come along and improve it. If it's possible the community usually figures something out. Either way stuff like this is purely cosmetic. It can and most likely will be enhanced by someone one of these days.

Not sure if this is any better or what you are looking for but it was just posted as a WIP at .info

Well not really.

New stuff is gonna cost an arm and a leg and you'll need a mortgage to buy it

Remember the 8800 cards? Retailed at over $700 when they came out a couple of years ago.

42" Plasma's came on the market for about $20,000.

Octocore and DX11 are WAY more than this game needs. You can get a REALLY good set up for less than $800 (CPU.MB,memory and GPU) which is probably about what you'll be paying just for one of the new CPU's that nothing on the market can use right now anyway.

And bigger isn't always better. My little Athlon 64x2 4200 with an 8570 card gives me 30 - 60 FPS which , to my surprise , is better than some of the much higher end systems out there. Weird but hey..ain't complaining.

By the time they new stuff is reasonably priced you'll probably want a new system for ArmA3 anyway.. :D

Youd dint play ofp right??

Try playing it two year later with a geforce 2 and a amd 1300 which was the top specs at the time... it wont go smooth.

Mp will demand most of the game, new rigs to do new addons that will require more and more power.

And i dont agreea about the cost thing.

Anyone that bought a 8800 ultra in its time three and a half years later still has a card that can run every gamein high except for crysys and Arma 2.

Yep... but you can buy them now for about 1/4 (or less) of what they originally cost and for about $200 you can get a card that outperforms them now.

Guess it will depend on what the new generation stuff hit's the market at.

If you don't like the explosions then don't buy the game, don't play it and don't enjoy the game for what it is, a realistic tactical shooter. Don't expect too much from the single player (buggy as hell). Seems like too many people these days are so hooked up on the visuals that the gameplay really does not seem to matter.
