The Arma 1 style of commanding a team

Recommended Posts

Hello,

i noticed that in ArmA2 this feature is no longer available:

in Arma1, when you held the spacebar for command mode, you had a little list of your squad in the top-right corner of the screen, from which you could select units with the scrollwheel.

i really liked the fact that vehicles and assigned teams appeared separate in this list making it very easy to use

but now it´s no longer there, and commanding a large squad with more than 10 units is a very combersome activity...

if i wanted my team red with four out of my 12 guys to go on ahead, all i had to do before was point, scroll and click. now i have to scroll to teams, scroll to teams again (because assigning is easier than calling), scroll to my red team, select it and then issue the order...

either that, or i´m fumbling for my f2, f3, f4 keys while holding shift... very awkward

also, before, i could select my team members by holding space and dragging a rectangle around them, very RTS-style... but no longer....

i really like the new quick command interface on spacebar, it´s quick and intuitive... but it´s only practical as long as your team isn´t split up...

i´m not saying it should go, on the contrary. i say a combination of shift-space could bring up the units menu, releasing shift brings back up the quick command menu, keeping the units you selected.

this approach gives us the best of both worlds, quick action for small teams with fine control for large ones...

thanks for your attention.

Tried to access the command menu with number keys? It's far more faster than scrolling with your mouse wheel once you got into it.

I like the fact that they made the command menu more like the good old OFP one. It was so simple, but people didn't recognize that...

This confused the hell out of me too, I'm still trying to get used to it. But after watching the latest BIS tutorial video I am willing to give more of a chance. Have a look at it.

They need to make a sticky for these videos, at the moment they are like some kind of secret with no official mention on this forum for some reason.

Yeah the wiki is good, but that's why we have Arma2 news section also. I think a sticky in there would help. There have been several command related posts over the past week, most of which would have been answered by watching the video.

Just hold shift then click on any unit in a certain team, then everyone in the team will be selected.

i´ve done the training and i understand how the new system works, that´s not the point anyways...

what i´m saying is that in Arma1, it was easier to select units than it is now, since we could do that simply with the scroll wheel.

i do not play with my hands on keyboard at all times, instead, i´ve configured my saitek X52 pro in a way that i can move around using the pedals and the hat on the throttle unit... it´s a very confortable setup with lots of buttons and knobs....

but it gets a bit clumsy when i have to reach for the f1,f2... keys, i would like it a lot if there was more flexibility in the command interface.

i reckon this could be easily implemented as an addon (by someone who knows what he´s doing)... but addons aren´t allowed in all servers so it would be best it this feature were patched in.

please consider this. would make the gameplay much more ergonomic and streamlined

I'm sorry to bump an older thread but i'm trying to locate the BIS tutorial video's without much luck. I checked out the youtube channel but that just contains story like video's.

Pretty sure i'm not seeing the trees through the forest here but will a kind soul steer me in the right direction please?
