11aTony 0 Posted July 29, 2009 I know I have read something about it once but I failed to find it again so here we go. In the beginning I didnt bother much about it but now its really getting annoying for me. For example, when you are in Ah1 as pilot and you have AI gunner. He is switching weapons as he think its best for certain situation but sometimes it gets really stupid. He gets stuck in certain mode if you have manual fire on. Usually on missiles even if you are out of them and he just wont switch to cannon or something. Or he switches and you turn for 90 degrees and he's back to missiles again. It really gets me killed becouse of this meny times. Tank gunners are not so bad but in heli and plane they are terrible. If you have manual fire off then he needs very long to do something. I wonder if you can disable this somehow or something like that?
l mandrake 9 Posted July 29, 2009 have you tried pressing ctrl + F to order him to switch weapons?
.kju 3245 Posted July 29, 2009 Maybe a config tweak would work. Commanding might the the key value here.
randir14 10 Posted July 29, 2009 It's great when you're trying to switch to the Hellfires to kill a tank then the idiot keeps switching you to rockets. Then the tank locks on and you're dead.

Its even better (not sarcastically) when the gunner is the only one who gets killed.
arthur666 10 Posted July 29, 2009 (edited) The fire control for the helos has got me down as well. Didn't have these problems in Arma1. The switching weapons is maddening, but also, the gunner doesn't seem as eager to target and fire at infantry as he should. I was supporting an assault on a village in my AH-1, hovering about 500m out. I could clearly see enemy inf. advancing and my gunner just sat there. Yes, I had given the "fire" command. In Arma1, he would have been raining death on them, 20mm at a time. So I give up and turn on manual fire, switch to rockets, only to have him decide hellfires would be a better option. I should have landed the chopper and executed him on the spot (no, not really). Could someone please script a spanking for this insubordination? Unrelated Question: In RL, an AH-64, the gunner is usually the one in command. He tells the pilot what to do. Is the same true for an AH-1 crew? I always thought it would be cool if you could control the pilot from the gunner pos., much like you can a tank driver from the commander pos. . Give simple commands like slow down, fly lower, stop, pop-up, etc. But given the AI, that is never gonna happen. Edited July 29, 2009 by arthur666
Xenios 0 Posted July 29, 2009 Yeah, they need to fix this. It really sucks when an enemy aircraft appears, you switch to AA missiles, get a lock, and then the AI gunner overrules you and decides, "I think short range unguided rockets would work best for shooting down that supersonic jet." This wasn't a problem in Arma 1 and OFP, so I don't know why they broke a system that worked fine for years. (Although I preferred the more realistic roles of pilots and gunners in ACE for multiplayer.)
H.A.L 10 Posted July 30, 2009 Many deaths later... this has made me switch to manual fire, which is only fine for missiles :( When i want cannons dumb a.i. still switches to other weapons even when they're empty. WTF?!? But i agree it was never a problem in ArmA & ofp.
Xenios 0 Posted July 30, 2009 They'll even override your weapon selection if you're set to manual fire. The only option right now is to use manual fire, then order any AI gunner to disembark and just leave them behind. Because until they fix this, AI gunners on attack choppers are less than worthless; they'll simply get you killed. As it turns out, I'm a lot more effective firing the cannon fixed forward than I was ever was depending on the AI to use the turret.

I like flying the Venom and notice this as well - helicopter crews have a hard time spotting infantry. This is obviously intentional and if you're playing as infantry and a gunship flies by you'll appreciate it. It's also interesting to note that in DCS: Black Shark infantry are literally invisible to AI aircraft until they (the infantry) start shooting. To me it feels like heli crews are slightly too blind to infantry, and their spotting ability is quite variable. Sometimes the AI gunners will see them before I do, other times I can be hovering less than 50m away giving the gunner a clear view of a group of infantry and they'll take quite a while to notice them. l mandrake 9 Posted July 30, 2009 Yup that's why I never fly with an AI gunner. Ever. I won't even fly with a human gunner unless we're on voice comms. Too frustrating
