Blood isn't realistic

Recommended Posts

Looking at the Youtube videos of in game footage I have noticed that the blood looks very unrealistic. It's too bright & it's just a quick spray without being able to see the blood gushing out after the spray.

What do you guys think?

It seems they spent a lot of time on realism in the game but left out the blood.

Yes, because I'm sure you are very familiar with what bleeding from real gunshot wounds looks like. Or perhaps you have reference material of people getting shot?

I think you are trolling and I find it very funny but this is the internet and I never really know.

So in case you are serious about blood gushing out after the spray (you sick bastard :) ) I advice you to search for videos of real bullet injuries.

No, in fact I would say keep away from such videos but you seem so happy with BLOOD GUSHING OUT LOL that I just feel like bursting your bubble!

You will thank me one day!

Really the only way ArmA2 is unrealistic blood-wise is that there's not enough of it pooling around bodies.

IMO one of the best addons for ArmA1 was the blood spurt addon, not because of the spurt itself but more for the ground spay. You could tell where the incoming was coming from by looking at the ground around the bodies.

No, I am not trolling.

I've seen real gun shot wounds & depending on where one is shot blood does spurt out after the initial spray.

What about the colour? It looks way too bright to be considered realistic.

I don't think BIS would really want to spend their time studying realistic gunshot wounds & blood effects. They might, I dunno, but I really wouldn't.

Dude you know what? I don't like talking to you! :)

You scare me and shit. HOW BOUT THEM ENTRAILS? That's not a good color for a spleen it needs some cyan and a bit of texture!

Ok joking aside my "favorite" blood spray was the one in Operation Flashpoint. Just a small misty thing and that's all. I don't need more.

And I don't think the game can manage a new "Blood pressure gushing" function. Machine guns would kill your frame rate! And I won't even go into the details of clothes soaking up blood and whatnot.

Some realism aspects are not going to make the game better.

Doesn't that depend on what has been shot? Oxygenated blood is very bright.

No but it would make it more fun. Who really wouldn't be impressed if you shoot someone in the guts with a .45 & get to see their gall bladder fall out or them try to staple their guts back inside themselves?

It's the same colour in game no matter where you're shot.

Impressed? Yes. Still don't really want it though.

Most people who have some degree of sanity wouldnt be impressed with that, if you really want to see what modern munitions do to people then I suggest signing up for a tour & see how entertaining you find it then!

Ive never seen blood that bright on my, or anyone elses clothes.

EDIT: Either that or i just remember the ArmA2/1/OFP blood to be very bright. :p

I would be impressed because of the technical detail and devotion to realism the dev team showed. I would express it like so:

"My god look at all this effort to make blood and guts look real in a game that most encounters are around 200m range isn't that great? OK how do I turn this off?"

Impressed yeah. For the wrong reasons? yeah!

To be fair, you've probably never bled from a freshly oxygenated vein of blood :)

I did make a little adjustment to 6th Sense's excellent blood addon, and I found that it was very easy to make the blood too bright:

Blood6.jpg

making it darker than it looks in Photoshop makes a better effect, but looks very black when it gets even slightly dark (which I guess is realistic):

Blood7.jpg

Hopefully the guys who made that blood addon will release a version for ArmA2, and I can relase the texture package for common use.

Well i take back what i said about the blood in ArmA2.

I just checked it and first of all, it was turned off for some reason and second, when i turned it on it was much, much darker then i remembered, spot on IMO.

Though i guess the fact that i didnt notice it was turned off shows how much i care about the whole issue. :p

I'm sane (almost). Just some people are naturally curious about things like that.

Who suggested finding it fun in real life? Not me... i was talking purely gaming.

If you are just curious about it then you can help yourself on the internet. ;)

True, I just enjoy seeing it in games as well.

Well, once I read that the reason you don't really see blood spraying out of gunshot wounds is the clothing absorbing it.

Even with my minimal knowledge on this subject I have no reason not to believe that :)

I'm not overly enthusiastic about blood and gore but if it's possible to tweak the blood color from bright red to darker red to look more real (and less cartoony) then that's a good thing. Cartoony stuff really sticks out in ArmA2.

That's not what arterial blood looks like. This looks like it's been clotting on the ground for a bit. There's a lot of blood in the brain but the brain is an intense consumer of blood nutrients and oxygen. That blood would probably have more in common with capillary seepage or veinous flow.

Now we're talking. When I find a body in Arma that's what I wanna see.
