Yapab 10 Posted July 26, 2009 (edited) Hi, Just had about 3 crashes within 1 hour in the campaign (first mission). What happens is that the graphics get corrupted and many strange textures are loaded... basically looks like graphic corruption/texture overload. I run Rivatuner 24/7 and monitor the GPU on my second monitor always. When this "crash" happens, the Video Memory in use jumps from 687 to 725+. I have an 8800GTX with 768mb of memory, I have set the Video Memory in the options to "Very High". I have played over 10 hours of ARMA2 in multiplayer/armoury etc.. without 1 crash. Its strange that this happens only when in campaign, in any other mode the memory stays at a normal 682~ mb usage and the game runs fine. Also, I can save the crash by alt-tabbing QUICKLY into desktop, then alt-tabbing back into game... after this the game runs fine again for about 10 or 15 minutes until the memory reaches 725 and the crash occurs again. What values are the Video memory settings in the options assigned to? I'm going to try "High" but I hope it does not produce other problems, such as slow texture loading as described in other threads. The problem seems to be a video memory leak, where the game will use more than is available and textures overload. Yapa Edited July 26, 2009 by Yapab

thr0tt 12 Posted July 26, 2009 There is a fault with the engine that is in every other thread posted in the troubleshooting forums, if you check the stick ATI problem thread then you will probably see the same issue but it is more evident on ATI hardware. Unfortanetly BI have not admited this is a game problem but has pointed the finger of blame at your hardware having a fault which is pretty shocking really. Yapab 10 Posted July 26, 2009 I will try with "High" setting, then Normal and Low if that is required. Pretty shocking how many problems people are having in that ATI thread.
manzilla 1 Posted July 26, 2009 I had this same problem as well. I was using a 3870 512mb and playing on very high. Lowering the video memory settings did the trick for me. Now I'm using a 1GB 4850 and can play on very high with out a problem.
Yapab 10 Posted July 26, 2009 Wish there was more information on the Video Memory setting, like what does Very High mean? 1GB? and is high 512 or 768? or 896 etc......... I just tried "Default" and its using 774 but has not crashed ... also why would it crash only in the campaign and NOT in multiplayer, not in armoury and NOT in Editor! Argh!!!!!!!!! Argh!!!!!!!!! Campaign is much more demanding... In ARMA1 default memory settings where good for 512mb cards after the 1.14 patch. Adjust your RAM usage with the command ( in a shortcut ) "-maxmem=2047" And you can do a few tweaks in your arma2.cfg.
Yapab 10 Posted July 26, 2009 Well I played around using the editor in the big city on the coast.... Same test as the ATI guys in that thread... basically putting myself in a chopper above the city and looking around/zooming... to load textures fast. On Very High with Texture Detail on Normal, the maximum memory usage will be 682mb. On Normal this will be 525mb, while on Low it will be no more than 432mb. The funny thing is that putting it on "default" uses up to 774mb of memory! My card only has 768mb and this kills the performance as the system memory is now being accessed which is of course much slower. So I guess the "default" setting looks at how much memory is available and tries to match it but seems to go a bit over.. memory leak? All this does not fix the problem in the campaign, as in the editor even though the memory went to 774 it did not crash/artifact! Wishing for a patch or two... Changing his text in a quote to make him look like a crybaby is a personal attack imo.

OrdeaL 10 Posted July 26, 2009 (edited) Done some testing myself with Video Memory settings. I found Very High was the best for my card, Better Frames and more constant.. 9600GT 512MB XT version (OC) My rig: AMD64 X2 Dual 4800+ 2.75GHz (OC) 4GiGs Corsair DDR2 800 9600GT 512MB XT version (OC) M2N-E Motherboard Win XP Pro 32bit I get 50-90FPS in editor/armoury, 30-60FPS in small user made missions(multiplayer) and 20-30FPS in Campaign and multiplayer games like Dom/Evo shadows/postfx/aa set to off. Rest normal with 2k view and 1440x900 Res and 3d Res. Seems im doing better then half you guys with good rigs lol Edited July 26, 2009 by OrdeaL

Can you post the contents please.
OrdeaL 10 Posted July 26, 2009 Sure but dont change your NonLocal Ram to mine. Leave it at what your own rig determines.. ArmA2.cfg language="German"; adapter=-1; 3D_Performance=100000; Resolution_Bpp=32; Resolution_W=1440; Resolution_H=900; refresh=60; Render_W=1440; Render_H=900; FSAA=0; postFX=0; HDRPrecision=8; lastDeviceId=""; localVRAM=515286784; nonlocalVRAM=515286784; Also some of the lines in my Profile cfg that you might wanna know: anisoFilter=2; TexQuality=1; TexMemory=3; useWBuffer=0; showTitles=1; showRadio=1; shadingQuality=7; shadowQuality=0; soundEnableEAX=1; soundEnableHW=0; customScheme=1; sceneComplexity=300000; viewDistance=2081.04; terrainGrid=25;
thr0tt 12 Posted July 26, 2009 (edited) Yup looks like mine, just seeing if the ram in the cfg was different. I run 1680x1050 now with pp off which appears to help a little. Will try changing the ingame memory option to see if that really has an effect (for me). One thing I can't live with is no shadows though and that can be a killer. Ok, had a go and no difference. I did notice your terraingrid set to 25 which is 'low' Terrain Detail in settings but I have never had an issue with terrain its really just buildings and their textures that kills the game (for me), how can a game with such lush folliage and terrain detail run so well but as soon as you introduce a building and then town it cripples the game...
