randir14 10 Posted June 28, 2009 Nice video, is the air combat in this game similar to a combat sim like Lock On or is it more arcade-like? For example can you shoot down enemy planes from miles away or do you have to get up close?
Shinobi575 10 Posted June 28, 2009 (edited) its a little bit of both, unlike Arma 1 & OFP the missles can actually miss which is quite impressive, as you can see in the first minute i miss with a sidewider at about 2-300 meters, The game takes dynamics, balistics, as well as wind into account, but the furthest away i think ive gotten a kill is a bout 900 meters away, all depends on how the aircraft is flying. nomdeplume 0 Posted June 29, 2009 Nice video, is the air combat in this game similar to a combat sim like Lock On or is it more arcade-like? For example can you shoot down enemy planes from miles away or do you have to get up close? It's definitely more arcade-like. For one thing, the draw distance is fairly limited (it's designed more for infantry so has a lot more ground detail than flight sims), for another the flight models are pretty simplified, and for most aircraft you target things using a simple auto-targeting system (hit Tab and you get the circle around your target) - no avionics etc. Also the damage model for vehicles is pretty simplistic, but usually sufficient. Still looks fun though. I only have the demo so have only flown a few helicopters and while not particularly realistic, they have a nice feel to them. Not sure what components of jets can be damaged, helicopters can lose their tail rotors which leads to an interesting experience.
Rho 0 Posted June 29, 2009 Thanks for the video, good job! It's good to see some air combat in Arma2. Can you post a pic of your graphics settings in Arma2 for this vid? I'm keen to see what settings you can use with the type of setup you have.

Rho 0 Posted June 29, 2009 Cool thanks. Do you lower your graphics settings for multiplayer? If so, why?
Amuro 10 Posted June 29, 2009 (edited) Air combat is fun, but I find flying thru the red circles in boot camp very difficult because of the lack of a FPM. Edited June 29, 2009 by Amuro
Shinobi575 10 Posted June 29, 2009 Cool thanks.Do you lower your graphics settings for multiplayer? If so, why? yes i play with all of them minus Object Detail on Normal, Object Detail stays on High, playing with 50 + players gets to be a little laggy on my machine at times because its a little older, so lowering the graphics down to normal in multiplayer seems to help my FPS A LOT but i dont usually lower the settings unless its 20 + players on say like a domination or something with a lot of AI :D ---------- Post added at 05:14 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:04 AM ---------- oh and i thought this was quite hilarious :D http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=77051&page=3scroll down to where the 2 retards start fighting lollllll
EricM 0 Posted June 29, 2009 You should add a weather module to have volumetric clouds... It's cool for air combat missions...
Netherscourge 10 Posted June 29, 2009 Pretty boring "dogfight". Why don't the planes turn and try to evade?
