Graphical problems / weird colored squares

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

Im having some graphical issues playing Arma2.

I received this game yesterday, and while playing i noticed some weird colored squares.

Sometimes they are big, sometimes they are small.

When i press alt tab and again alt tab the problem is solved for a short time, it comes back again after a few moments.

I 1st noticed this problem few weeks ago when i played Call of Duty 4 after i bought a new graphic card ATI radeon 4870 1 Gig.

I had the same weird squares.

Yesterday i put in my old nvidia 8600GTS, and no problems then.

Weird thing is, when i play Arma 1 i dont have any problems with the Ati card

Anyone knows how to solve this problem? Its defenitly an graphic card problem, maybe the driver.

Here are 2 pics.

laoding menu, these squares are there sometimes.

And when playing also these weird orange spots are there.

Have you overclocked your graphics card?

Almost certainly it's due to your card overheating or being overclocked I'd guess.

Might help if you posted your OS and driver versions.......

Its not overclocked at the moment.

I had it overclocked before, but not manualy

The program Catalist Control Center has the option to automatic overclock the graphic card, keeping it save.

I manualy got my fan running on a higher speed then it normal does.

Cause normally the card gets when gaming at 80c', but cause i got my fan running faster my card is arround the 60c'.

Im using the latest driver released from ATI.

Graphic drivers version is: ATI Catalystâ„¢ 9.5 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional/Home Edition

Intel pentium D 2.8ghz

3 gig mbram

Ati radeon 4870 1 Gig

Windows Xp professional pack 3

So the card is a few weeks old or you noticed it a few weeks ago? It is of course possible the card is simply faulty, does happen, as it's happened in more than ArmA2 it's clearly not an ArmA2 specific issue.

I always have cooled it more then it normally does.

I got this card now more or less 3 months.

I played Arma, and it worked great, no problems at all.

Then a few weeks ago i thought, lets see how Call Of Duty 4 looks like with my new card.

And then i saw a few of those weird squares during gameplay.

But then again, After that Playing Arma it works fine, without any weird graphic problems.

And now im playing Arma 2, and those squares are back, and even more then when i was playing COD 4.

And, when i play Arma 2, sometimes i dont see the squares, and then suddenly they appear again. Then i press alt tab 2 times and arma2 makes a quick load and then the squares are gone again, while coming back later again.

Real weird.

So u guys think my card is broken?

If so.. im pretty pissed of. Its quite new, and it hasnt been heavy overclocked.

Even the Temps ( 80c' normally fanned ) are not that bad.

And im cooling it at a temp of 60c'.

Really weird this.

So ur opinions are this has nothing to do about the driver?

The card is just fucked up?

Dont u guys think its a real small chance that they will accept it back and fix it, or giving me a new card?

I ordered this card online.

It should have 1 years warranty if you purchased it from new, there is no other advice anyone can give you, there is no magic fix for a borked card.

Only thing you can do is try other drivers, if still the same then card is fubar.

I've seen very similar artefacts, namely with a borked 7950GX2 a few years back. I actually had to underclock the card by about 10% to remedy the problem. In the end I took it back to the shop, got it replaced and everything was fine. :)

You could try the same - lower the GPU and memory clocks on the card and see if that fixes it.

underclocking doesnt solve the problem, still artefacts visable.

I've send an email to the company where i bought the card.

It's still got 9 months warranty, so that shouldnt be a problem.

Isnt it weird that when i play Arma1, i dont have any artifact problems.

It works just great in Arma1.

Does someone know an explanation why it plays Arma just fine, and when i play Arma 2 or call of duty 4 i get these artifacts.

btw.. i send a rma request tot he company

Could be a memory issue mate.. If you can access the bios and enable a slow memory check. > it may take a while.

My default bios check ran ok, but mine has an alternative NV memtest with a slow mode that found a corrupt stick.

if your bios doesn't have a good memory checker also goog' memtest86. although you need to run that from a boot floppy/usb stick.

I have seen that before also. (Just RMA'd a 8800GT Nvidia card for the same thing.) ArmA II may just be stressing it more than other programs/games.

Your card is for sure failing and it was nice of ArmA II to let you know before any other programs. :yay:
