Nagual 0 Posted March 7, 2002 I was just playing a lan game, and towards the end some players connected through the net. I stopped the current game, and let everyone in for a little shooting fight. Everyone had the message "use modified config file", and all except one or two came up with the message: "playerXXX uses modified config file - Timeout (Probably Cheat Used)" This didn't stop them from playing and from having fun. Does anyone know what causes this message? Nagual b
Guest Posted March 7, 2002 Probably that you have some mod or something which they don't have, or one of the people that joined your server has FADE.
Nagual 0 Posted March 7, 2002 yeah, ive had things like islands and addons for ages, but never seen the timeout message before. THe FADE things is interesting though..thnx
Speeeedy 0 Posted March 7, 2002 Read the multiplayer forum and you will see (the parts about config.bin)
Nagual 0 Posted March 7, 2002 thanks speeeedy, The stuff about people editing config bins is a concern, i was hoping that wasn't what caused the "timeout" message...
suma 8 Posted March 7, 2002 What version are you using? 1.45 or 1.46? I think you should not get this message in 1.46, but I am not quite sure. To answer your question: in 1.46 you should see this question only if given player uses modified config. When this is discovered, server sends some addional questions. If they are not answered within given time limit (which is one minute), time out message is displayed. I think this should happen only when the network is very busy, as one minute is quite a long and any client should be able to reply within this limit. Other computers on the lan had 1.45, but no problems. As far as network goes, players that connect to my lan through the web are often from the same broadband network, and it is usually later in the evening, and can mean high speed transfers. One player (with the lowest ping), never turned yellow in the briefing, but got the message while we were waiting. Also the mission had to be recieved by the clients, and with a few sound samples, it was around 260kb, which may account for the minute wait. But then again, it was most likley other cable users, who could download over 1mb in one minute. If i remeber anything else i will post it here. Must sleep now... Placebo 29 Posted March 8, 2002 The Satchel sound addon is throwing this up, for people who don't have the addon as well as for those who do, basically the server needs to be all sound addon or none...... I hosted a game, I'm running 1.46 with the sound addon, one other used 1.46 and the sound addon, three others with 1.46 didn't have the sound addon, those three all got the "modified config timeout" message and were no longer there, I and the other guy with the sound addon could play fine. I then reversed it, ran the game without the sound addon, those with the sound addon got "modified config timeout" message and were no longer there, I and the others without the addon could play fine. Major Fubar 0 Posted March 8, 2002 It's a bit weird expecting people to have an unofficial mod installed for the game to run properly (multiplayer)...
Placebo 29 Posted March 8, 2002 I don't see how it's weird, it's my server, I play only with friends, if I want to use the sound addon I'll use it dammit

Nagual 0 Posted March 8, 2002 Interesting placebo, but the sound wasnt installed when the messages came up. It had been, but was removed cleanly. But from what you said, the other players may have had it. Only one player seemed to be addon savvy, the others mentioned the word with fear (as in "I hope i dont drop out cause i need addons!. Anway, thnx.

Placebo 29 Posted March 8, 2002 No none of them disconnected on their own, it seemed to be done "automatically", happened to all three at the same time at the briefing screen.

There is currently no automatic disconnecting based on config verification. Are you able to check with them what exactly happened - or even better, are you able to give me step by step guide how to reproduce it?
Chris Death 0 Posted March 8, 2002 Suma - yesterday i tried connecting to a clan-mate. He had the soundmod installed, i didn't. I could join, then i could select side, then player, and when the mission started loading, i got: loading mission file 0kb of 0kb. There it stopped, and i could only go for a reboot of my pc. Also two days before, another buddy joined onto my game, and he had the soundmod installed, again i didn't have. We even reached the map screen, but once he arrived there, the modified config file message appeared, and he got disconnected automatically. The disconnect might be caused by missing something. I assume, it depends on the grid-coordinates. hope this helps to light up the dark
Placebo 29 Posted March 8, 2002 Suma I asked Dave what he saw and he said he simply CTD, I can only assume the same happened to the others who were not using the soundaddon while I (the server) was.

I supposed I will get this answer from you. My explanation of what is happening is as follows: Server tries to ask client about signatures of some classes that are probably not existant on the client, which may cause client crash This may happen if config has not only changed values, but also removed some classes. I will try to change verification code to be more flexible, so that this situation will lead to warning, not to a crash.
Placebo 29 Posted March 9, 2002 Well don't let it do anything to delay Resistance For the most part I think everyone is ok with the fact it's a case of all use sound addon or none use sound addon
