Arma installation and Swap file ?

Recommended Posts

Hi Gamers,

with no high end GPU running, i'm always optimizing my old rig for performance. What is the best setup if you have at least 2 harddrives (C+D) :

1) C = Windows + Arma

D = Swapfile

2) C = Windows

D = Arma + Swap

3) C = Windows + Swap

D = Arma

cheers,

gambla

A1 doesnt need much RAM. You could try to disable the swap file

altogether.

That could cause trouble with other progs/games.I'd go with option 1.Make size of swap permanent,eg. min 1024 max 1024.

While I am no expert, you may want to take partitions into account

as well. After all the read/write speed is different based on where

the data is stored.

So in other words you would want to have your data in the most

inner parts of the HDD to be as quick accessible as possible.

I was under the thinking that it was the other way round?

I use 'Ultimate Defrag' to place my Arma files on the outer edge of the HDD -so to be read quicker.

Think i read this in the 'Tricks/Tips' thread.

Yeah could be that I am wrong.

Maybe the HDD only can speed to full speed on the outer parts.

The transfer rate is faster on the outer parts (which is the "beginning" of the drive, opposite to for example a CD where the inner part is the beginning) because there's more surface area covered by a single rotation.

For swap, it propably doesn't make that much a difference in practice where you put it.

Thanks for your replies. I just do a fresh install of Arma on my second harddrive D now and have disabled the swap file. I think i test using a fixed swapfile afterwards. I'm curious if i can "feel" a little better loading time. Will then have a look on Disktrix's UD to put them on the outer edge of the HDD.

But i've read about this too, there are games that load so much data that you need to have a Swapfile.

Btw, i just play Evolution SP and my fps when attacking the first city Paraiso went down to 7-11 fps (usually about 40-60 fps on medium settings). Don't know if anything went wrong with addons and so. But this is another story... smile_o.gif
